DEAR PARISHIONERS, “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. (Matthew 5:44)

Jesus takes the Old Law, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” and seeks to take the law of reciprocity to a different level. Why? Because we are a people of a different level. We, as Christians, are a people who are focused on the lofty Kingdom of Heaven, rather than the lowly realm of the Earth. Being so, we should submit to the higher standard of the Christian way rather than stoop to the lower standard of the worldly way.

Love your enemies and pray for your persecutors is a lesson from Jesus that sure sounds good in theory, but it suffers a hard blow in practical reality. We witness this by being aware of just how many lawsuits this country handles; the incredible increase in our insurance premiums and the general fear that we have about doing anything without consulting an attorney.

Jesus is not taking away the need for and the significance of justice. No, Jesus is calling us to reconsider our desire not for restorative justice but for the wrongs we commit because of our inclination towards retribution, retaliation and revenge. In practicing these wrongs, we stoop to the low standards of the world and turn to violence rather than peaceful resolve. Jesus teaches us that this is a very unbecoming behavior for a Christian.

So, what do we do when we are confronted by conflicts? Do we just lay down and give up? No, we wrestle with the difficulties of life. In doing so, by God’s grace, we discover new and different ways to overcome adversities. We are to engage in life by applying the lessons we learn from Jesus.

I took notice this year of the upsurge in the number of high school females that are out for wrestling. No matter if you are a fan or not, I can honestly say that I never thought I would see the day that this would happen. And, I’m glad it did. Wrestling forces both men and women to acquire a set of skills that are applicable toward life in general including: knowing your opponent (a.k.a. your enemy); getting in close proximity to them; and engaging them in a series of moves (escapes, reversals, take downs and pins) on a level that is not meant to be violent but artful.

Jesus instructs his disciples, as a continuation of the Sermon on the Mount, about a series of moves intended to turn the world’s evils upside down. If we would apply the analogy of wrestling to this particular Gospel reading, we might see some connection to the role of “reversals and take downs” when grappling with our opponents. And, as the state wrestling tournament has come to a close this past week perhaps we can reflect on this prayer and apply it to our approach to life’s obstacles.

A Christian Wrestler’s Prayer (by Coach Doug Newman)

Thy most gracious heavenly Father, hallowed be thy name. Help me to use the moves that I have been taught at the most appropriate times. Help me to listen to the knowledge and instructions that my coaches give me before and during the match. Help me to use my talents and skills to Your Honor and Glory. Help me to fight as hard at the end of the match as I do at the beginning no matter what the score! Help me to always be thankful for the Referee keeping me safe. Help me to accept his calls even if I don’t agree with all of them. Help me to accept his authority over the match as I accept the authority of Jesus Christ over my life. Help me to be Humble in Victory and Gracious in defeat. I ask this in the name of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen Fr. Phil Gibbs, Pastor

What will be included in the new school building project? Our plan is to replace most of the current school building, which includes new classrooms, and renovation of the kitchen and multi-purpose room. The structure will also include a new daycare. Components of the preliminary plan include:

• MAXIMIZING RESOURCES: Resurrection will be keeping the current gym to reduce construction costs. The south side of the existing school will remain in place to be utilized for future building programming and parking lot development. • BUILDING UP: Constructing a three-story, two-section building on the school’s north section will consolidate educational activities and provide a more functional space for school activities. • Housing a parking-lot level infant care/daycare center on the first floor will provide a robust feeder system for our elementary school. • WEATHER SAFETY: The new school will provide a place where students can safely go in case of a tornado. With the current school, students must walk across the parking lot to the church basement during a potential tornado.

In late March, we will have opportunities to learn more about the building project and ask questions. Please visit Resurrection’s website and click on the campaign logo for more information: www.res-dbq.org
