LAF Recognized By State Out of programs from all of the branches of
AAUW, nine programs were selected as
“Programs of the Quarter” (October, November,
December) by AAUW-CA because of their
outstanding speakers and ideas. COV was one of
them for our Legal Advocacy program in October
“Women Challenging the System with a professor-
researcher from the Salk Institute and her
attorney speaking about “What it Means to Stand
up to Gender Discrimination”. We are happy to

BOARD MEETING – Mon., Feb 12th, the COV
BOARD WILL MEET AT Elva Vollbrecht’s
home at 825 Applewilde Dr., San Marcos at
the regular time of 9:30 am.
President’s Message
I have said many times that it is the dedication of so many of our members that makes our branch so successful, not to mention just a whole lot of fun. We are fortunate to have so many talented and hard-working women who serve on our Board, as well as head our service committees and interest groups. Yet even among this vast pool of leaders, some just stand out for special commendation. One such member is Jan Boysen.
For the past 5-1/2 years, Jan has committed herself to producing a quality Newsletter, which keeps us informed, entertained, and in touch with each other and with the AAUW world. I don’t know if you all can appreciate what a big job this is: making sure contributors meet their deadlines, reviewing and editing all the submissions, finding just the right thematic graphics, interviewing new members for their bios, and getting it all together and out the door in a timely fashion.
As our friend Elva told me: “Jan used her writing and editorial skills to present the branch in a positive and engaging way. I often told her that if I were not already a member of the branch, I certainly would have joined after reading one of her newsletters.” I’m sure you all feel the same way, and I hope you will all join me in sending her this message of our heartfelt love and appreciation.
THANK YOU JAN! - Kathi
Greetings from your new Newsletter Editor - Wow! What big shoes I have to fill! I second the sentiments above from our President, and offer my thanks and best wishes to Jan for her many years of service and much deserved retirement from the newsletter. I am looking forward to taking over this exciting project and sharing all the wonderful work and fun things we do at AAUW-COV. I leave my Co-Vice President of Membership duties in the very capable hands of Janet Shannon so I can focus on making this the stellar publication you’ve come to expect. I was the editor of the paper in high school and started college as a Journalism major so I have a love for writing and proofreading and disseminating information. I hope this first effort meets with your approval as I continue to learn and find new ways to keep you informed. Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions for articles or style changes you’d like to see made. Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

Francine Aames
Francine was born in New York City to parents of
Eastern European descent. Her grandparents emigrated
to the U.S. from Poland and her parents were born and
raised in NYC. She has always been interested in
teaching and nursing, and at the age of 13, she thought
about becoming a nun; however, her parents and
teachers advised her to wait a few years before making
that decision. She volunteered during her high school
years for a Catholic school home nursing project in
Harlem, which she enjoyed very much, leading her to
apply for, and receive, a full scholarship at King County
Hospital -based nursing school in Brooklyn, NY. She
completed the three year program in 1965, married in
1970, and moved
to Syracuse, NY. At that time, she began her 50 - plus
year career as a nurse. She is pleased with her chosen
profession, which has allowed her to both teach and
provide nursing care for patients, and meet her goals set
from her high school days. In 1978, she and her
husband moved to San Jose, CA, and in 2000, she moved
to Oceanside. She continues to do pediatric nursing at
Rady’s Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Francine is
interested in furthering the advancement of women,
hence her interest in becoming a member of AAUW. She
raised a son and a daughter, and she currently enjoys
two grandchildren, an eight month old boy and a girl,
age three. She also enjoys cooking, reading, theatre,
good films and travel. She will be leaving soon for a
River Cruise in Europe which will take her to some of the
countries of her heritage.
