CENTREPORT STRIVES TO PROVIDE INLAND PORT COMPANIES WITH INDIGENOUS ENGAGEMENT PATHWAYS www.CentrePortCanada.ca CENTREPORT CANADA EXPRESS CentrePort is a proud member and signatory of the Winnipeg Indigenous Accord; a living document to guide a shared commitment to the Journey of Reconciliation in Winnipeg. The second all partner gathering for signatories was held on February 9, where more than 100 individuals were in attendance to discuss progress on organizational goals related to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, challenges encountered along the way and pathways for future success. As part of the organzation’s commitment to advancing reconciliation, on February 8, CentrePort Canada, along with the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) and Working Warriors, announced the formation of a joint venture between the SCO and Working Warriors. The resulting corporation, the Southern Chiefs’ Economic Development Corporation, will focus its efforts on developing and maintaining strategic partnerships in order to create employment and training opportunities for Indigenous workers on a full-time or contract basis. Located at CentrePort, Working Warriors is an organization that is building a national skills inventory and database of the Indigenous workforce. Their collaboration with the SCO, an organization that represents 34 Indigenous communities, will connect employment opportunities to SCO community members, providing a clear path for businesses to engage with and access an Indigenous workforce. Working Warriors is well positioned to connect with the clustering of industry already taking place at the inland port, and to leverage the growing momentum in key industries such as manufacturing, distribution, trucking, and warehousing. CentrePort will play a key role in these connections by providing introductions to CentrePort companies and providing Working Warriors with exposure through marketing and networking opportunities. CentrePort companies were able to hear first hand from Working Warriors president, Jamie Saulnier, at a partner roundtable on February 13. Participants learned about ways to more effectively implement Indigenous engagement strategies within their workplace and how Working Warriors can help them to access a skilled Indigenous workforce to achieve their strategic goals. One of the first companies to explore ways to advance its hiring goals through this initiative is CN. “Exploring partnerships like this strengthens our ties by developing respectful and mutually-beneficial opportunities for both CN and Aboriginal Communities,” said Doug Devlin, CN Senior Manager Aboriginal and Tribal Relations. “CN is hiring across our network and having a diverse workforce helps bring new ideas and new solutions for doing business as a modern transportation logistics company.” Other CentrePort located companies and partners engaged with Working Warriors include Bird Construction Inc. and the Wescan Group of Companies. CentrePort is a proud member and signatory of the Winnipeg Indigenous Accord; a living document to guide a shared commitment to the Journey of Reconciliation in Winnipeg.

“CN is hiring across our network and having a diverse workforce helps bring new ideas and new solutions for doing business as a modern transportation logistics company.”

Other CentrePort located companies and partners engaged with Working Warriors include Bird Construction Inc. and the Wescan Group of Companies.

CENTREPORT CANADA SCHOLARSHIP FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGYOn November 30, 2017, Shannon Nordal was presented with the CentrePort Canada Scholarship for Environmental Engineering Technology.

CentrePort is proud to partner with Red River College (RRC) and Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (MITT) to support the development of a skilled workforce in Manitoba by awarding an annual scholarship at RRC and a bursary at MITT. Both awards are supported by proceeds raised at CentrePort’s annual invitational golf tournament.

Congratulations Shannon and best of luck!

SAFE DRIVERS = SAFER ROADS IN MANITOBAThe Manitoba Trucking Association applauds a recent decision by the provincial government to fully fund driver training for eligible appli-cants in the province. Under a newly-developed program, any Manitoban can apply for the program:

1. Go to an Employment Manitoba office to apply for the program and to receive a letter outlining next steps for those who are eligible;

2. Apply to a trucking company for a driver job and obtain a letter of employment; and,

3. You are now eligible for 100% funded driver training at an approved driver training school.

“Committing to training drivers and encouraging companies to hire drivers who have been through a rigorous, approved training program is a sign that the Province of Manitoba is committed to road safety, as are all of our members at the MTA,” said Terry Shaw, Executive Director of MTA. MTA members seeking more information about this program are encouraged to contact the MTA for more information.
