The Verbal Behavior Center for Autism (VBCA) is proudly hosting its 3rd Annual Silent Auction Fundraiser, “A Night to Put the Pieces Together” on March 7th, 2015 at The Mansion at Oak Hill in Carmel, IN. The VBCA is a non-profit organization that has provided high-quality Applied Behavior Analysis services to children with autism and their families since 2003. The annual fundraising event helps to support the treatment of children with autism ranging in age from two through twelve years old who have significant developmental delays. The VBCA’s services allow for a skilled Therapist to work one-on-one with each child to help promote the highest level of progress and success. Our team of Therapists and Board Certified Behavior Analysts work collaboratively to facilitate progress for each child in areas such as communication skills, adaptive skills, social skills, toilet training, and feeding problems. Our goal is to help children with autism gain their fullest potential and transition into a typical classroom setting where they can naturally learn from their teachers and peers. This formal event will consist of dinner, drinks, and entertainment, giving friends and family of the VBCA an opportunity to celebrate the significant impact the VBCA has had on children and families over the past 12 years. Additionally, recognition will be given to Chris Clarke, the VBCA’s past President and Founder, who unexpectedly passed away in June. Chris was the driving force in helping to facilitate the development of the Center. As a parent of a child with autism, Chris passionately volunteered his time at the VBCA because he understood the unique challenges that faced parents. Chris was dedicated to assisting families with solidify high quality services for their children, and his legacy will

continue as the VBCA strives to meet his vision of assisting families affected by autism. The money raised by our evening of fundraising will help to support tuition assistance programs for many of our children. The cost of providing such high intensity services to treat children with autism can be very high; therefore, the VBCA’s tuition assistance program enables many families to enroll their children, who could not otherwise benefit from this type of individualized treatment. This year’s 2015 Fundraiser is expected to host many more guests, provide many more auction items, and as a result lead to additional funds raised. All money will be used to directly benefit the treatment of children with autism with a focus on providing tuition assistance to families. If you are interested in general information regarding “A Night to Put the Pieces Together”, or if you are interested in making a donation to the Verbal Behavior Center for Autism, please contact Kerri Butts at 317-848-4774 or [email protected]. Hello everyone! My name is Liam but my family and friends call me, Li Li. I am 5 years old. I was born just one minute after my twin brother Kellan. Grownups use very big words to describe the challenges I face, but I know that from my perspective, I am a happy boy who loves my family and my therapists. Although I cannot speak yet, my therapists at ABC are working with me daily to help me to communicate my thoughts in other ways. I am making progress that my parents and grandparents can see every day.

I smile easily and I hug warmly. These are just a few of the ways that I show my family and therapists that I love them while I cannot yet use the words “I love you.” My family understands that I communicate differently than they do, and they are working hard to learn my language while I work hard to learn theirs.

Before I came to ABC, I didn’t understand how to tell people what I wanted or needed. At ABC I am learning to use my hands to do sign language. This makes it easier for me to communicate when I want something to eat or to play with a certain toy. I am now learning so many new things at ABC that my family is having a hard time keeping up with all of the new words I can say!

I used to bite frequently to let grownups know if I was upset, frustrated, or if I couldn’t tell them what I wanted. Learning how to sign has taught me that I don’t need to bite anymore in order to communicate what I’m feeling.

I used to prefer to play alone but since coming to ABC, I have learned that playing with others can be just as much fun. I like to watch how my classmates do things and then I will try to do it too. I also enjoy the time that I spend with my brother. He’s always there to drive me around in his motorized car or to help me use a new toy. We love to play games where I chase him. When I catch him, we laugh together. ABC helped make that possible.

I can spend a lot of time playing with a toy that lights up and makes sounds. I learn how it works

and like that I can control the action. I also like to climb and have mastered the perfect somersault!

I also love listening to music or my family singing. I will sit quietly and listen intently to any number of songs. Music is my happy place and it helps me to develop imitation skills. I am very good at imitating sounds. My therapists at ABC are helping me learn new sounds every day and our hope is that this will one day allow me to express myself with words.

I am very comfortable at ABC and with my therapists. I understand what they ask me to do and am quickly learning how to respond. They are very patient and their encouragement makes me want to try hard for them.

These may not be my words, but they are certainly my thoughts.

Fondly,Liam

At Autism Parent Care students attend a Montessori pre-school program in the morning and ABA therapy in the afternoon with the support of an ABA therapist in both settings. Clients enter the program after a brain map shows deficits in cognitive, social, language and/or behavioral areas along with a medical diagnosis. At first these teaching philosophies seem to contradict one another, however, when combined they provide a well-rounded educational fit for all children.

Through both programs a client is allowed the freedom to learn by choice and by programmed targets through DTT teaching. The school provides a setting for both typical and non-typical peers to learn from one another. The therapists guide activities and also support self-directed learning activities through exploration of the environment. Learning is guided at each individual’s pace. Clients learn in group settings as well as in individual therapy.

Both Montessori and ABA stress the importance of repetition, self-responsibility, individualized instruction, peer interactions

and language growth. Daily living activities are stressed in culturally diverse terms. World current events are discussed on a daily basis. Independence and self-care are highlighted in a natural way. The materials support functional learning in a natural de-velopmental sequence.

Clients with autism thrive in this unique program because of the multi-faceted teaching methods with one-on-one ABA therapist support. Social and language growth are supported throughout the day by peers, teachers and therapists. Executive function and other cognitive skills are practiced when the clients choose their work, discover a solution and complete the task.

Along with other data collection, brain maps are repeated every six months to document individ-ualized progress. Weekly targets are reviewed and updated by using the VB-MAPP assessment tool. Daily parental communication facilitates program carryover from the school and therapy time into the home. The assessment tools we utilize as well as parental anecdotal testimony supports the positive results we see every day.

Children require so much energy. Parents must be "on

their game 24/7." Perhaps the toughest element in childrearing is remaining consistent in a world where parenting is such a "trial and error" endeavor. Although parents you don't need to be perfect, it is important to be as consistent as possible so that your child will know what to expect and be less likely to manipulate you.

Consistency Requires Some ForethoughtI encourage parents to be slow and deliberate about their rules and expectations for their child. Kids are experts at negotiation and they will frequently bombard you with reasons why they might want more freedom, extra privileges, or increased independence. As a parenting coach, I encourage parents to use the phrase, "I will get back with you on that" as they consider a child's request. Then with all the consistency they can muster....they need to thoughtfully evaluate the situation and decipher what they intuitively believe is best for their child. When they share their decision, they are to deliver the information with a quiet authority that conveys that their decision is not up for further discussion. (This may mean leaving the room to avoid defending yourself.)

Give ChoicesWhenever possible, it can be helpful to give your child two choices that allow him some opportunity for independence and decision making. When they are young it might be letting them pick out one of two choices of apparel to wear. As they get older it may look like letting them decide on spending their money on one of two types of games to buy for their Xbox. When they are teens it may result in them deciding whether they will be spending the night at their

friend’s house on Friday or Saturday. Handing out the choices, allows you to ultimately create a safe and healthy structure while your child gets to exercise some mindful decision making.

Safety is always of utmost importance when it comes to childrearing. And sometimes the most painful aspect of parenting is watching your child experience natural or logical consequences that occur when they participate in the school of life. When a child chooses not to do his homework and gets a bad grade (a natural consequence) he might likely lose his Game Boy privileges because homework comes first at your home (a logical consequence.) If your child refuses to brush his teeth and has 3 cavities (natural consequences) and you stop buying sweet snacks to decrease the likelihood of more cavities or dental bills (logical consequences) you will likely watch your child suffer through the consequences and protest about how unfair you are being. If your child does not practice his instrument and his teacher admonishes him in public (natural consequence) and you stop paying for his instrument (logical consequence) you may fear that you have made it easy on him to "be lazy" when in reality, he may not have found what he truly loves and will work for!

Parenting is about making tough choices....but conscious parenting helps your child to understand the consequences that life has to teach him!

Conscious Parenting: Consistency, Choices and Consequences

Here is where the consistency comes into play....Under no circumstances should

you allow them to re-engage you in a discussion....because you know they will

inevitably where you down.

Remember they will balk about how stupid you are for controlling their destiny by deciding on their choices, but restricting

choices allows them to have some say in their destiny without handing them the keys to the

car before they have learned how to drive.
