Babies are such amazing creatures! They begin life with only cries and kicks, and before we know it they are walking and talking. The process of how children learn language has been of interest for centuries. There have been all kinds of theories on how children seem to move from being “blank slates” to holding conversations in a few short years, especially when it seems to be so difficult for adults to learn a second language in that same span of time. Part of the answer is that children seem to be pre-programmed to look for patterns in the information they hear and to attach meaning to those patterns. There is even evidence that hearing in utero leads to recognition of sound patterns for newborns!

When the same combination of sounds seems to happen frequently and be connected to direct adult attention, that pattern gradually becomes recognizable to the baby as her name. Babies recognize general patterns of rhythm and pitch first, from the classic “uh oh!” as an object drops to the patterns of “peek-a-boo!” Infants begin to recognize their names, as well as “mommy” and “daddy” as early as 6 months of age – long before they are able to say them. It is a process that happens with such regularity that we begin to see it as ordinary! But what do we do when it doesn’t happen that way?

Hearing loss is the most common issue at birth and one that often changes over time. In fact, most children have some degree of hearing loss during their formative years, usually from recurring ear infections. But when children can’t hear those early patterns in speech, or if they hear them inconsistently or in an altered form, their language development can suffer. A hearing loss that remains undiagnosed and untreated can result in a permanent language gap that will affect social skills, literacy, and academic

progress long-term.

Even a hearing loss in only one ear has been shown to increase the likelihood of repeating a grade in school tenfold.

So what’s a parent to do? Pay attention to any concern about your child’s hearing, and follow up! The first report you will get is the newborn hearing screen through the state’s Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program (EHDI). You get lots of paperwork when you have a newborn, but this screening report is important! Pay attention to that screening report, and if your child does not pass, follow up right away! Pay attention to your baby’s responses to words and sounds, and ask your doctor (early and often) if you have a concern. Pay attention to the symptoms of ear infections, and follow through consistently with your doctor’s directions. Don’t be afraid if your child needs amplification – current technology in hearing aids has come as far as cell phone technology! They even have remote controls and Bluetooth connections (not to mention cool colors and decorations from Mickey Mouse to Spiderman)!

May is National Hearing and Speech Month; it is the perfect opportunity to take another look at your child’s language development. If you have a concern, make an appointment to get your child’s hearing screened today!

I started Hannah in our lil’ Dragon Program when she turned 3 years old and kept her there until she turned 6, when I moved her up into our Basic Karate Program. Four year later she had earned her Black Belt and I took her to okinawa, Japan as her reward for 7 years of hard work. For the past 6 years she has continued to train and teach as a Black Belt! She is now employed as an instructor at our school and at 16 years of age, she has 13 years of Karate training under her belt. The life skills that she has learned from karate training will last her a lifetime as will the life Protection skills that have now become second nature. Her ability to follow directions and lead other students will transfer well in the real world.

Hannah has also participated in volleyball, soccer, basketball, dance and guitar. She is a well-rounded

young woman and is also involved in her church; doing mission trips and volunteer work in her community.

Hannah knows that she may participate in any activity that we can afford and that the only rule we have is that she cannot quit an activity until the season or session is over. Quitting is not an option!

As a junior in high school she is anxiously waiting to graduate and continue her journey into adulthood.

Whatever she decides to pursue, I know that she will be successful. She has proven to herself that if she works hard, she can accomplish anything!

ABC At A GlAnCeGet to know

The Applied Behavior Center for AutismWe Were Founded by an Autism Mother

ABC was founded in 1997 when CEo, Sherry Quinn’s son Michael was diagnosed with autism. At the time, autism was a rare diagnosis. In fact, Michael was the only child in his entire school district with autism. After doing extensive research, Sherry realized that Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy was the best possible treatment for her son. At the time, that service was not offered anywhere within the state of Indiana. Sherry set out to change that.

We are Indiana’s largest & longest Running ABA Therapy Provider

ABC has grown to be the largest and longest running ABA therapy provider in the state of Indiana. We are proud to offer 7 outpatient facilities throughout the state. This includes our Indy North Center, Early Childhood Center, Carmel Center, Indy West Center, greenwood Center, Richmond Center and our Terre Haute Center (located inside the Terre Haute Children’s Museum). Each of our centers offers a unique blend of amenities including custom-crafted indoor gyms and individual therapy rooms.

We offer More than ABA Therapy

At ABC, we offer a wide variety of high-quality services. These include: ABA Therapy, Behavior Consulting, Diagnostic Testing, and Indoor Swim lessons.

We Serve a Very Broad Age Range

ABC proudly specializes in serving clients ages 2 and older.

We offer Specialized Programming for Teens & Adults

our lIFE Program (learning in Functional Environments) serves ages 10 and older. lIFE is a full-day program that uses the science of ABA to teach skills that promote independence and quality of life. Children and teens in this program learn to work on functional skills within a simulated home environment and real life, community-based settings.

Important skills such as budgeting money, grocery shopping, peer interactions, doing laundry, hygiene and more are worked on within this program.

This program is offered at our Indy North, greenwood, Indy West and Carmel locations.

We Provide Full Insurance Management Services (Free of Charge)

At ABC, we understand that there are several stresses and pressures that come with searching for the right services for your child. Sorting through insurance struggles should not be another stressor added to that list. Because of this, our trained team of experts handles all insurance processing on behalf of our clients. This is a service that we offer to all families completely free of charge.

To inquire about services, call us at 317-849-KIDS or visit our website at www.AppliedBehaviorCenter.org.

There is nothing more painful than watching your child have difficulty

socializing with other kids. Parents know how important social connection is and when you have a child who is extremely introverted, or shy, or perhaps they have a developmental disability like Asperger’s, they truly don't have the inherent skills to put themselves out there and make friends naturally.

Much of your time will be spent identifying how your child is uniquely special and what they can like about him or herself. Enhancing good self-esteem means that you assist your child in knowing what makes them unique and special. When children are not accepted by their peers, they will typically feel like they are outcasts and that they will feel like they don't measure up to the other children. Your job is to get them to see their own inherent strengths and to build upon them so they take the risk to cultivate friends.

Although you cannot do their work for them, you can certainly assist them in organizing events that will allow them to spend time with others. As a parent, this means that you must encourage them to socially connect to others. This can be difficult if your child lacks the confidence to have friends over, to participate in sleepovers, or to want to invite another child to a movie or to a trampoline center or to another event. You definitely have to go the extra mile to make sure that your child has opportunities that he would normally arrange for himself. Don't get discouraged if you have to do this several times as repetition will teach your child how to socialize in the world.

Your child will likely want to spend time with their phone or computer and isolate him or herself in a way that keeps them busy. limit

their tech time so that you can work on face to face contact.

I work with lots of adults who are inherently shy. It takes a lot of self-esteem boosting to assist them in seeing that they can truly accomplish a goal like asking a person out, or setting up an event outside of work, or asking the group to go out for dinner after a project. These people tell me that they wish they had learned how to do this in their childhood.

You can be instrumental in helping your child develop these skills. The hard part will be that your child will not necessarily want to take the risk to ask Suzie and Mary over to the house to spend the night. It may even involve some real persuasion to get them to take the risk. I encourage parents to model that behavior and to invite other children over to the house when they are waiting in carpool line in front of the school or they are gathering their kids at a school carnival or dance class. Take advantage of kid activities. Parents may need to roll model how to connect with others many times before a child takes the lead and does the same.

Placing your child in an extra curricular event can also be helpful as it allows your child to role model inclusion in a group.

Parenting can be tough but if you break it down into “chunkable” moments, you will likely see small successes. And when you strategize how to make small changes in your child's daily functioning and it involves social connections, you'll end up seeing big results!
