Thoughts from Ground Levelast month at the dinner table, Katherine proudly

shared with Susanne, Jonah, and me that she waslearning about George Washington in school.

Since February is the birth month of our first president,I want to share some of the events from theRevolutionary War involving this founding father andone of his generals.

On Christmas Day 1776, General Washingtoncrossed the Delaware River from Pennsylvania intoNew Jersey to surprise and defeat the British andHessian forces at the Battle of Trenton. Remember thefamous painting depicting the Delaware Crossing thatpreceded this victory? After winning the Battle of

Trenton, Washingtons forces headed north towardPrinceton hoping to add to their military success anddrive the British out of New Jersey.

During the night, the American army moved quietlyfrom Trenton to theoutskirts of Princeton.

They wrapped thewheels of their canon incloth to keep quiet andmarched all night. Theroads had frozen andthis made the marcheasier (and certainlycolder). They got to theoutskirts of Princeton on

January 3, 1777, andfound the British rearguard under the command of Major General LordCornwallis, who thought Washington and his army

were still in Trenton. The battle on that cold day wasinitially fought in an apple orchard owned by a Quaker, but moved to a wide open meadow in which stood anoak tree. The Continental Army was victorious over the

British that day.The Battle of Princeton was a turning point in the war for independence. One of Washingtons generals,Brigadier General Hugh Mercer, and his 350 men werethe head of the spear in that battle and were the first tomeet British forces on the battle field, two regimentsand a mounted unit.

During the course of the battle, General Mercerwas wounded by British bayonets. Not wanting to leavehis men or the battle, Hugh Mercer was placed againstthe oak tree while the fighting continued. When thebattle ended, he was taken to the house of a nearby

Quaker where he, sadly, died nine days later from hiswounds.

The oak tree became well-known as the site from which General Mercer conducted the battle oPrinceton. It came to be known as the Mercer Oak.

Susanne and I have visited the site of this famousbattle. I can remember a real sense of awe being there. It was the first Revolutionary War battle site for thisCalifornia native, and an important part of studying atPrinceton. I wonder if any of the seven Revolutionary

War veterans buried in Pisgah cemetery fought in thatbattle or knew any of the soldiers who did.

An historical marker tells how the events of thebattle unfolded, and how General Mercer was able to

stay on the battle field even while wounded. To me, the image of General Mercer wounded and

leaning against this oak tree is a powerful image ofbravery, sacrifice, and dedication. Similar events are told

    about people in everywar.

This image is also areminder that because wehave all faced challengesin lifesome moredifficult than othersallof us are, in some way,

wounded and brokenpeople. Battles come inall kinds.

As Christians whoface challenges in life, webelieve there is a sturdy

place to lean for support. We can lean on the strengthof Jesus Christ to help us endure lifes struggles.Nothing we face can undermine the sturdy support ofChrist and His church, for the two are not separable.

In Acts, Peter preached these words: We are witnessesto all that Jesus did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put

Him to death by hanging Him on a tree, but God raised Himon the third day (Acts 10:39)

Take hope in the power of God to provide a steadyplace in all the battles of life. This steady place is thecross of Jesus Christ, a mighty tree and the power ofGod made visible. (1 Corinthians 1:18). Lean againstthis tree. It will hold you. Trust in the freedom, newlife, and community of faith this tree provides to all the

world. Announce the good news of this tree whereveryou go.

    Grace and peace, Jon
