    LENTEN REGULATIONS

    1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent(excluding the Solemnity of St. Joseph per Canon 1251).

    2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

    3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, suffi-cient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each ones needs, but together they should not equal another fullmeal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are al-lowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

    4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.

    5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop andfollow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a perform-ance of works of charity and mercy.

A Note from the Pastor, Fr. Peter Jarosz

I want to share with you some information on Eucharistic Adoration. I would like to thank the adults, children and teenswho make a commitment to Adoration each week. It has been a blessing for young moms and even our college stu-dents. My gratitude goes to the Eucharistic committee for their hard work to make this prayer event a success in ourparish. For those in leadership, commissions and committees , I encourage you to take an hour each week. Thank you

to those in leadership who already participate. This effort will enhance your ministry to the community and to the dio-cese. Families , please take the time to bring your children and teens at least once during the Lenten Season. What agift to give from a parent to your children. Those who care for their parents, when you can break away from that respon-sibility with the folks, offer even a short time for them at Adoration. Let us celebrate this opportunity of Jesus being withus, not only at Mass, but with us during the week. Now more than ever, we need to be drawn to the Eucharist, not onlyThursdays, but before or after the Mass, spend a moment with our Lord. Its so easy to rush off after communion or afterthe closing song to your next commitment. Slow down for a moment and give thanks to God. Let us make an effort as aparish, to come on time for Mass and remain there until the Priest reaches the back door . Have we forgotten to bow asyou wait for the person in front of you to receive the Sacrament. When you are in front of the minister or clergy all youneed to do is extend your hand as a throne and accept Jesus in to your body, mind and soul. As we show respect to ourfamily members and the stranger, let us show greater respect to Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament. I see a goodsense of reverence among many in the assembly. Lets just do our part for the Lord, go the extra mile for Him, offer upyour day to Jesus. Blessings on all of you, as we prepare to enter into the Lenten Season.

Eucharistic Adoration is a Eucharistic devotion whereby members of a Parish or some other group unite in making con-tinuous adoration . In this way, worship is rendered to God the Father through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit.People are far more appreciative ofexposition and will thus be more responsible in keeping their Holy Hour with OurLord. What more wonderful way to witness to our belief in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Most Blessed Sacra-ment than by faithful attendance at a weekly hour of Adoration. A prayerful, silent yet quite clear profession of faith.Never forget the words ofOur Lordwhen He gave His Eucharistic discourse. Indeed, this is the will of the Father, thateveryone who looks upon the Son and believes in Him, shall have eternal life. Him will I raise up on the last day. (John6:40)

When you make a commitment to spend one hour a week with God in Adoration, with Jesus, truly present in the Eucha-rist, you help to enable all of the other committed hourly adorers to continue worshiping on their hours. Your presenceduring your hour, as well as the presence of other adorers during their hours, enable dozens of other people, people whofor various reasons cannot commit to a specific hour, to also render worship to God. In addition, your presence allows

people who may have reached a crisis point in their lives to come to God in their time of need. This is something thatGod will not forget.

The time that God gives us on this earth is a gift. We were each created to live and to love and to serve the Lord. All thatwe have is from God. What greater gift can we give to God than to make the choice to return to God just a little bit of thattime each week that He has given to us. Is God really asking that much? Think about it; pray about it; and please con-sider giving just a little bit ofyourtime, time that God has given to you, back to Him.

What is another good reason for Eucharistic Adoration? To provide an easy, attractive and practical way of renderingGod adoration, thanksgiving, reparation and petition. St. John Bosco used to teach his students:

Listen: there are two things the devil is deadly afraid of:fervent Communions and frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament.

Do you want Our Lord to grant you manygraces?Visit him often.

Do you want Him to grant you onlya few?Visit Him but seldom.

Do you want the devil to attack you?Rarelyvisit the Blessed Sacrament.

Do you want the devil to flee from you?Visit Jesus often.

Do you want to overcome the devil?Take refuge at Jesus' feet.

Do you want to be overcome by the devil?Give up visiting Jesus

    COMMUNITY BUILDING EVENT

    March 14 St. Joseph Table

Our plans are underway for our annual St. Joseph Table to be heldon Sunday, March 14, at 1:00 p. m. in the Christ the King Gymna-sium. This is a wonderful opportunity to share food and friendship

with the families and friends of our parishioners, families and visi-tors. We would like to share a short history of the St. Joseph Ta-ble, especially for those who are unfamiliar with or new to theevent. Following is that brief description.

The table is a tradition of simple, usually meatless dishes, pre-pared and shared with neighbors and friends. Those attendingoffer a free-will donation and all the proceeds are given to the pooror a charitable organization.

Sicilian/Italian families started this tradition. History tells us theyprayed to St. Joseph to end a famine caused by drought. Whentheir prayers were answered and it rained, the people showed

thanks to St. Joseph by sharing their precious food with the poor. The menu typically included pasta, fish, eggs/omelets, bread andvegetables. The menu signified the poor who were unable to af-ford meat during this period. Another reason for this meatless tra-dition is believed to be the fact that the feast day falls during theLenten season.

There are special breads baked in crosses and other Christianshapes, which are displayed on the main table in the center of thecelebration. The main table, usually in the shape of a cross orthree-tier (to signify the Trinity), is decorated with flowers, a sam-

ple of each food item, candles and an image of St. Joseph. It isthen blessed on the day of the event.

The proceeds from this year's St. Joseph Table will go to Port Min-istries in Chicago. This is a very worthwhile organization that pro-vides food assistance, job training, medical help and communitysupport for one of the neediest areas of the city.

For our table to be a success again this year, we will need the par-ticipation of many. We will be asking for your specific commit-ments and contributions during the next few weeks. Please bethinking now how you might help: food donations, set up, cleanup, vendor solicitation, vendor donation pick up, just to name a fewof our needs. If you have any new or gently used items for ourraffle baskets, you may bring the items to the rectory on Wednes-

days 1 to 4 p.m. or call Mary Ellen (see phone # below) for pick up.

Being involved in this event has proven to be very rewarding. Planto attend, help if you can, come enjoy good food, fun, community, and help those in need. What a wonderful feeling you will have -we guarantee it! May St. Joseph guide and protect your family.

For further information please call Mary Ellen Clish at 630-495-1339 or e-mail [email protected]

Making a Good ConfessionThe Sacrament is available every Tuesday during Lent from 5:00pm until 7:00pm.Also on Saturdays, from 4:00pm until 4:45pm. You can also call the rectory to make an appointment if you wish.

Many people have avoided celebrating the Sacrament of Penance, sometimes for years at a time, because they "don'tknow what to do." The following brief explanation is intended for a person who has not been to confession in some time.

It explains how the first form of the Sacrament of Penance may be celebrated. The person who is going to confession iscalled a "penitent" because he or she wishes to do penance and to turn away from sin.

Preparation Before going to confession, the penitent examines his or her conscience, often by comparison with the TenCommandments, the Beatitudes, and the example of Christ and then prays to God for forgiveness.

Going to Confession The priest welcomes the penitent and then both make the sign of the cross, saying, "In the name of the Father, and ofthe Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen." Next the priest briefly urges the penitent to have confidence in God. If the penitent is unknown to the priest, it is good for the penitent to indicate his/her state of life, the time of the lastconfession, difficulties in leading the Christian life, & anything else that may help the priest in exercising his ministry.

The Word of God Then the priest or the penitent may read a passage from the Bible. Suggested passages include Ezekiel 11:19-20,Matthew 6:14-15, Mark 1:14-15, Romans 5:8-9, Ephesians 5:1-2, 1 John 1:6-7 and 9, or another text.

Confession of Sins and the Act of Penance The penitent then confesses his or her sins. If necessary, the priest should help the penitent to make a completeconfession and to have sincere sorrow for sins against God. The sorrow a penitent feels for his or her sins is knownas contrition and must include a resolve to sin no more and to avoid all future occasions of sin. The priest then offers suitable advice to help the penitent begin a new life and, when appropriate, leads him or her toresolve to make appropriate restitution for the harm he or she has caused others. The priest imposes an act ofpenance on the penitent. The penance corresponds to the seriousness and nature of the sins and may suitably takethe form of prayer, self-denial, and especially service to one's neighbor and works of mercy. This action can serve tomake up for the past, help the penitent begin a new life, and provide an antidote to the confessed weakness.

The Prayer of the Penitent After this, the penitent prays a prayer expressing sorrow for his or her sins and resolving not to sin again. A card withseveral examples of the prayer may be provided in the confessional. The penitent may recite the prayer by heart orread it. This is often called the Act of Contrition. Here is one example of the Prayer of the Penitent: My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosingto do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmlyintend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our SaviorJesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.

Absolution by the Priest Following this prayer, the priest extends his hands, or at least his right hand, over the head of the penitent andpronounces the formula of absolution. As he says the final words he makes the sign of the cross over the head of thepenitent: God, the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of his Son has reconciled the world

to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Churchmay God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of theSon, + and of the Holy Spirit. The penitent answers, "Amen."

Proclamation of Praise After receiving pardon for his or her sins, the penitent praises the mercy of God and gives him thanks in a shortinvocation taken from Scripture, such as "Rejoice in the Lord and sing for joy, friends of God" (Ps 32:1-7, 10-11), "TheLord has remembered his mercy" (Lk 1:46-55), or "Blessed be God who chose us in Christ" (Eph 1:3-10).6

Dismissal of the Penitent Then the priest tells the penitent to go in peace. The penitent continues his or her conversion and expresses it by alife renewed according to the Gospel and more and more steeped in the love of God, for "love covers over a multitudeof sins" (1 Pt 4:8).

    THE MEDICAL MISSIONS NEED THEM

CCW will have a collection of unused/unfinished medica-tions for the Medical Missions. Start saving them for ournext collection the week-end of March 6 and 7. Pleaseseparate the expired from the unfinished medications andplace them in separate bags. Any expired medicationscollected will be sent to a facility in Naperville for properdisposal.
