The Meaning Inside the Megillah:
What is behind all that noise?TBE Library Thursday Feb. 25, 2010
After Evening Services 7:45 PM
Not just a story! Why do we drown out Haman’s name?Where is God in the Megillah?
From the Desk of Rabbi Arye Berk:
What are you "requesting" and what are you "seeking"?
From the Book of Esther Chapter 5 Verse 6 “And the king said to Esther at the wine feast: “What is your request? It shall be granted to you. What do you seek? Up to half the kingdom it shall be done?”
“Esther” yelled the irate husband. “What do you want?” screamed the bothered wife. “I can’t find my keys!” bellowed Morty, Esther’s husband of 30 years. “Well where did you leave them last?” cried out an exasperated Esther. This happened at the Grogger’s home about once a week for over 30 years, this and many other exchanges that held more meaning then the simple understanding of their loud and tiresomeexchange. Morty constantly was looking for his keys or his glasses and stormed around the house enragedthat Esther did not divinely know what he was looking for and rush to his aid. By the time he finally didutter any words his frantic cries were not for help or for information but the beginnings of an all too famil-iar rage. Esther was not innocent of either, she knew what the barking was about but was vexed at herhusband’s inability to express his needs and to ask for help.
Morty was looking for his keys but was really looking for help. Esther was seeking a husband that couldcommunicate his needs to her in a less hostile way. We are all looking for things, whether it is our keys orumbrella but what we are seeking for in life and from God often remains unspoken. Or comes out inwords or actions of frustration because we have difficulty phrasing what we are seeking?
The story of Purim seems a straightforward story of an evil man, Haman that is power hungry and easilyinsulted by Mordechai’s Jewish values. Mordechai does not bow to any self important man only to the Master of the Universe, God. Esther is a beautiful young maiden that is not looking for the promotion tobe in the King’s herem but is willing to help her uncle but seeks guidance in how to handle her precarious situation. The King , if unhappy with her, could dispose of her as he did Vashti. What is the Book ofEsther asking of us and what are we seeking from the Book of Esther?
The mitzvah is to hear Megilat Esther at Purim, but I am asking for you to do more than just listen to theMegilah and drown out the evil Haman's name with your noisemakers. I want you to seek an understand-ing of this book that was different than last year or the year before. In each reading and listening we canall attain a meaning that is new and fresh and interpret new ideas from the story we all know from ouryouth.
What does this require, that people who have stopped attending our Megilat Esther reading and Purimcelebrations because their children are grown to join us to seek out their own new meaning and under-standing. We can celebrate and interpret at the same time, just as we can ask and seek answers simultane-ously.
I look forward to having our community join together and celebrate Purim this month and for us all toseek new meaning in one of our greatest tales.
Be Happy it will soon be the month of Adar,
Rabbi Arye
