First, the Torah Restoration Project, which Sam Evans coordinated. He facilitated Rabbi Gedaliah Druin’s multiple visits to the Temple. A certified scribe and scholar, Rabbi Druin evaluated our six torahs and restored four of them. We are continuing to raise funds this year (2010) to complete the project. Rabbi David’s Message: I’m Not Ready

Next bulletin is March-April. Deadline is February 1. Email articlesand photos to [email protected].

It has begun. The planning forDalia’s Bat Mitzvah celebrationhas begun. For eleven years I’vetold other people how to do it.But now I’m the one seeing mydaughteron thebimahpracti-cing hert’filot(pray-ers),callingtheaccom-moda-tors, searching for the perfecttallit, booking the DJ, andchoosing invitations. Thank God,I’m not alone in my planning, andthe truth is: much more of this willfall on Heather simply because sheis better at it.

I remember eleven and a halfyears ago feeling the same way –emotionally unprepared. Dalia wasborn two months early and whileher room was just about ready, her parents were not. Her arrival, much like her upcoming BatMitzvah, was and is too early!I’m not ready for my little girl, who climbed up and down thestairs of the bimah with Kyra andKephi as a baby, to now stand onthat bimah as a Bat Mitzvah. How did we get here?

This month we begin readingthe book of Sh’mot (Exodus.)One could ask, and many haveasked, about this new chapter inJewish history, “How did we gethere?” We know, of course, thatJoseph was thrown into a pit byhis brothers, taken to Egypt bypassing Ishmaelites, thrown into

jail there only to become secondin command, thanks to his fancydream interpreting – but, really, was it all by chance? How did wereally get here?

Joseph asks and answers thatquestion in parshat Vayigashwhen the brothers are reunited.Joseph says to his siblings, “Don’tbe distressed or reproachyourselves because you sold mehere; it was to save life that Godsent me ahead of you” (Genesis45:5.) Do you see what Josephjust did? Subtly and withoutmissing a beat, Joseph explainedthat even though you threw me ina pit, sold me to Ismaelites andlied to our father; and even thoughI was sold to Egypt, thrown in jailand forgotten about – that’s notwhy I’m here. I’m here in thisplace and in this time because thisis where God wants me to be.“God sent me ahead of you,”Joseph explains – not you.

How did I get here? How didDalia get here? How did my familyreach this point in our lives?Because God brought us here.Every joy and challenge along theway was leading to this newchapter in our family’s life – thisnew Jewish journey. We can chalkit up to chance or coincidence but, like Joseph, I think there’ssomething more to it. I believe, like Joseph, that God has apurpose in every journey.

I’m used to teaching parentsand families that in these next fewmonths of preparation it is

important to search for that Divinepurpose. I’m not use to searchingfor it myself. I guess it’s my turn.I’m not ready!

President’s Message

3

A friend of mine signs hisemails with the following quote:“Peace”.

It does not mean to be in aplace where there is no noise, trouble or hard work.

It means to be in the midst ofthose things and still be calm inyour heart.

How wonderful would it be ifwe could only achieve this. Wehave many goals for oursynagogue, and sometimes it feelsas though we are so busy talkingabout doing things that we neveractually get things done. But morethan halfway through myPresidency, I can see so much thatwe’ve accomplished. We’rebuilding a new handicapped ramp, and we are starting a totalrenovation of our library.

We’re about to embark on anew project designed to refocusand reenergize our Board ofDirectors, and we are constantlyreviewing how we can make thetemple more accessible toeveryone who wants to use it.And yet my heart is not calm. I’malways thinking that we can domore, thinking that our potential isnot even close to being realized. Iknow that I have asked for yourinput before, and that request hasmet with mixed results. But if youdon’t let us know what you arelooking for, how can we improve?

So here is what I have on myTBA wish list:1. To hear from ourmembers as to what you arelooking for to improve your TBAexperience spiritually as well associally/educationally.2. What kind ofprogramming would you be

interested in participating in?3. What physical plantimprovements would you like tosee done in the next two-fiveyears?

In addition to answering thesequestions, I’m personally asking

all ofyou tofind itinyourbusysched-ules todonatenotmoney,but

time to TBA. We have manydedicated volunteers who helpmake everything run so well, butthey can’t do it all. We need somefresh, younger blood to help uscontinue the good work that TBAdoes all year long. We especiallyneed some volunteers withaccounting or financialbackgrounds to help us in ourday-to-day running of the temple.

For all of these requests, please contact me [email protected] or call meat (617) 549-5522. I’ll alwaysmake time during the day tospeak to you.

Usually, I try to make myPresident’s message aninspirational one. But this time,I’m asking for your help. I’m surethat I’m not the only one who hasit in her heart to give back to oursynagogue, a place that has givenso much peace to me and hasshown me a way to be calm in myheart at times when everything isso noisy, troubled and hard

around me. Let it be the same forall of you.

B’ShalomMarci

Our renovations are about tobegin. We are hoping that not toofar into 2010, the cabinets, carpentry and painting will bedone. Then the task of catalogingall the books and shelving themwill start. I will keep you postedon the happenings.

Thanks to generous donationsto our library, I have been able topurchase three new books….hotoff the press. They will be in our“satellite” library…The Chapel.

The Lost Symbol by DanBrown. Brown’s latest book takesplace in Washington D.C. RobertLangdon is summoned there togive a speech, and within minutesof his arrival, the evening turnsbizarre and we are led throughhiding places in the Capitol that Inever knew existed. This is hisbest novel yet.

All Other Nights by DaraHorn is the story of a Jewish spyduring the Civil War and theattempt to thwart the assassinationof President Lincoln. The storybegins on the first night ofPassover, when the main characteris ordered to kill his uncle.

Day After Night by AnitaDiamant. Diamant’s latest noveltakes place in the Britishinternment camp, Atlit, in Israel atthe close of WWII. What wassupposed to be freedom for thesurvivors of the Holocaust, was inreality another prison. This is the

Although many people maythink that the cold dark months ofJanuary and February in NewEngland are terrible, we are luckyat Temple Beth Abraham, becausewe have many motivating andstimulating things happening tobring us out of our winter blues. We have three SynaplexShabbatot scheduled for January9th, January 23rd, and February6th. We also have a ShabbatUnplugged on January 29th. Thiswill be a special evening, becauseit is also the Religious SchoolZimriyah (Song Festival).

If you are caring for someoneolder, or looking ahead to yourown senior years, plan onattending a special program called“Our Parents, Ourselves” onSunday, February 7, 10 a.m.-12noon. This is being co-sponsoredby Hebrew Senior Life (OrchardCove). Many of our congregantsare part of the sandwichgeneration, responsible for theirolder parents as well as their ownchildren. How do we know what’sbest for our parents andourselves? This program willprovide adult children and seniorsthe essential information to helpnavigate the maze of options forsenior care.

We hope that you will comeand share in the anticipation, asTBA sends our first group ofstudents to Israel. Please join uson Shabbat morning February13th, as we say a prayer for a safejourney and share in theexcitement that the students andtheir families will have.

The Religious School studentshave been actively engaged in avariety of educational programsduring the first half of the schoolyear. It was exciting to see somany parents take advantage ofparent-teacher conferences inNovember to learn about theprogress that their children aremaking as they delve into ourJewish heritage and traditions. While parents were busy speakingwith the teachers, the childrenwere participating in a MitzvahProject by preparing a meal thatwas taken to the residents ofMainSpring House, a temporaryhomeless shelter.

In our ongoing effort toprovide our students with oppor-tunities to enrich their classroomlearning, Kitah Dalet went inNovember on its annual “JewishBoston Trip”, led by StevenGreenberg, featuring a tour of theVilna Shul, followed by an explo-ration of Harvard Street and allthe Jewish shops.

In December, we celebratedShabbat with the Gan (kindergar-ten). It was so nice to see familiessitting together around the tabletogether to welcome in the Sab-bath. Kitot Gimmel, Daled, andHay had a Shabbaton weekend, which included an ice cream oneg, activities with Rob Brockman, ahands-on Torah exploration, andbeautiful Havdalah service. Alsoin December, parents and childrenjoined together to create personal-ized mezuzahs. The discussionsthat followed the project werethought provoking, and ledeveryone to reflect on the meaningof having mezuzahs in our homes.

There are many more activities

to look forward to in the upcom-ing months. For instance, KitotAleph, Bet, and Gimel will becelebrating their class milestones, and the school-wide Zimriya (songfestival) will be held on January29th.

In February, our seventh andeighth grades will be taking a tripto Israel with Rabbi David andMelissa Rudman. This is anamazing opportunity to reinforce allthat our students have learned overthe years at TBA.
