Secondly, not only does Vincent’s image indicate an invitation to contribute time and talent, but he seems to take the position of a beggar, one who pleads for engagement and not merely peripheral involvement. All of this takes place on the light and dark stage of everyday life, where truly Vincent believed God lives, moves and acts among us. Feast of St. Vincent DePaul (By Joann Vasa, SSND)

No matter how you slice it, St. Vincent DePaul was quite a character. The image of Vincent presented here offers a unique reflection of our hero as both inviting and challenging, and ever in touch with the light as well as the dark side of life. Let us take a few moments to honor his memory and recommit ourselves to his challenges. With that familiar twinkle in his eye, Vincent possessed an uncanny ability to draw others into his projects to assist the poor of his day. Note the outstretched arms and extended hands leaning forward from his chair to draw you into his circle of charity. What is it that Vincent is asking of you as a member of the Vincentian Family at St. Vincent’s? How will you respond? Secondly, not only does Vincent’s image indicate an invitation to contribute time and talent, but he seems to take the position of a beggar, one who pleads for engagement and not merely peripheral involvement. All of this takes place on the light and dark stage of everyday life, where truly Vincent believed God lives, moves and acts among us. Vincent always felt that he needed to do MORE in response to the all-consuming love of Jesus Christ. What is the “MORE” that God is asking of you? Finally, Vincent’s face reveals his dogged dependence upon Divine Providence . Everyday life carries us along with its joys and sorrows, but through it all Vincent steadfastly trusted that God was near. “He who from all eternity has chosen you to assist the poorwill preserve you as the apple of His eye. Let us abandon ourselves to Divine Providence. It will know quite well how to procure what we need. “ (Letter #245, October, 1636) What worries or concerns do you need to entrust into God’s hands today? During this week, take a few moments to

reflect on this powerful image of our patron saint,

and allow it to speak to you. Then, choose one thing

you will do to respond with courage and faith!

Changes to Prayer List Our bulletin prayer list is an important part of our prayer community. To ensure that it remains up-to-date we’re going to leave names on the list for four weeks at a time starting October 1st. You may put a name on at any point; in four weeks the name will automatically drop off unless you resubmit it. You are welcome to resubmit multiple times. If you would like to have a name included on the new prayer list starting October 1st, please submit the name by noon on Monday, September 26th. by calling the office at 314-231-9328 or emailing [email protected]@stvstl.org.

Parishioner Bridget Flood wrote a wonderful op-ed piece on volunteerism that recently ran in the Post-Dispatch. The article is-based on her experience volunteering for Let’s Start and her role

as executive director of the Incarnate Word Foundation. You can find a link to the story at www.stvstl.org

IN THE NEWS!

“To Love and Serve the Lord” You are invited “To Love and Serve the Lord” a conference being held October 21st-22nd at the Cardinal Rigali Center. The conference, sponsored by Catholic Charities St. Louis, will focus on how a parish can live out the Gospel call to serve all who are in need. We’ll explore the connections between our faith and our actions on behalf of charity and justice. We’ll learn concrete “how to’s” of organizing parish ministries and working effectively to advocate for those who are vulnerable in any way. The weekend will include inspiring keynotes, practical workshops, and Mass with Archbishop Carlson. Workshops will focus on four areas: direct service, advocacy, leadership development and immigration. Registration is $50 before Oct 7. For details see or contact Greg Rohde at [email protected] or 314.367.5500 x1155. Note that our parishioner, Pat Poehling, is on the corps team of organizing this conference and our parish will have its own exhibition booth. Mark your calendars to attend and if you have any questions you may contact Pat at 231-9328.

The Trivia committee is still accepting donations of theme filled baskets and miscellaneous items than can be

used as attendance prizes. Items can be left in the office marked “SVDP Trivia”.

Your votes are needed! Please go in to the website and register to log in each day and vote! "Reques t f o r vo t e s : Chec k ou t www.markhammarkofdistinction.com East Side Heart & Home is dedicated to making a positive impact in East St. Louis. This non profit agency helps low-income families become homeowners. Members of our parish are connected to this program and Linda Mertz has nominated ESH&H as a worthy project to hopefully receive grant support from Markham Vineyards. This company gives back to the community. ESH&H was chosen as one of the top ten finalists from all over the country and the Markham company puts the vote to the public. The top two groups receive $25,000. Please help by voting every day on line at the above mentioned website. You can read about the program and place your vote every day from August 29 through October 3, 2011. Your help is requested to build another home in spring, 2012. All you do is go on the website, register your email address to log on every day and vote--it takes seconds! In case you did not know, Sr. Carol Lehmkuhl, Director of the Family Center was a parishioner, is currently at St. Catherine and Sr. Mary Ann Buhr is a parishioner and Assistant Director and Sr. Mary Kay McKenzie is the project manager and also a parishioner. Linda Mertz is on staff, a parishioner at St. Vincent's and on the board at the Family Center and volunteers there. Various board members have a connection with St. Vincent's or St. Catherine's so the thread of serving the poor is indeed present. Please support this fine organization with your votes for ESH&H.

Meals are being served this week and the sewing ladies need help. Since our guests at meals really appreciate the sewing ladies who mend, alter, patch, and sew on buttons, they keep us busy. So, we need more help. An hour of volunteering on your part makes their day. Who knows what it will do for you. If you'd be interested in this service, please contact Sr. Regina at: [email protected]

IMPORTANT TO READ! PSR classes have resumed. If you have not yet registered your child for these classes, please contact Linda Mertz at 314-231-9328. The bulletin deadline has been changed. All bulletin item requests must be sent by NOON on MONDAY to Karen, the bulletin editor at [email protected] or to Kerry 314-231-9328. Thank you for your cooperation.
