Then Elijah heard what we know as the “still, small voice” of God. No fanfare, no drama, no grand entrance … just a soft whisper from the mouth of the Omnipotent. If you’re anything like me, you’ve done your share of foxhole praying … pleading with God to rescue us from a difficult situation, in exchange for which we promise to go forth and clean up our act. We may be so focused on a spectacular response (our nasty boss leaves the company, we pass the calculus midterm, our rent check doesn’t bounce) that we fail to be aware of God’s quiet presence right beside us. The theme of remaining calm in the midst of chaos is echoed in the gospel from the book of Matthew, in the familiar story of the apostles whose small boat was being tossed about in heavy seas. The frightened men were even more terrified when they saw what appeared to be a ghost walking toward them on the water’s surface. It was Jesus, and he told the apostles not to be afraid. Not convinced that he was seeing the real Christ, Peter asked Jesus to prove himself by allowing Peter to walk on the water. Stretching out his hand, Jesus beckoned to his disciple, who began to move through the waves toward the Savior. But when the wind picked up, Peter began to sink and cried out to be saved. Jesus rescued him and chided him for his doubt and lack of faith. As much as we may wish it, it’s unlikely that God will pluck our awful boss out of her leather chair, cause our calculus instructor to grade the exam on a curve, or miraculously deposit money in our checking account. Our challenge is to build on our faith and to be quietly attentive to the voice and presence of God in our everyday lives.

CRIES AND WHISPERS By Elisabeth Boone

Have you ever been on the scene when something terrible was happening … a multi-vehicle collision, a toddler falling into the deep end of the pool, a frail senior fainting on the sidewalk? All around you, people are shouting, jostling, trying to help, and the result of all this well-intended activity is utter chaos … until someone emerges from the crowd, speaking calmly and acting with authority, and efficiently begins to take control of the situation. In today’s first reading from I Kings we learn how the prophet Elijah, who incurred the wrath of Queen Jezebel, fled to a mountain cave after she threatened his life. We are happy to welcome Christy Toben to the St. Vincent's staff, following Linda Mertz’s retirement as PSR director. Christy will take over many of Linda’s roles in guiding the religious education of our children. Christy, her husband Kevin and their three children are parishioners here at the parish. Christy first came to St. Louis as a Gateway Vincentian Volunteer in 2003. She’s served as a teacher, university campus minister and principal in Catholic institutions for the last 14 years. During this time of transition, parish staff took time to step back and reflect on the best ways to move forward in providing religious education for our parish's children. We're excited to share some new programs with you in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

THANK YOU to all who helped sort the r u m m a g e throughout the month, donated rummage, brought the rummage up from the basement, set up the sale, worked the sale and cleaned up after the sale. And a special THANK YOU to Al Marshall who brings his trailer over for the move. A little over $1,000 was made at July’s sale. Half of this amount is donated to the parish. .

Our 33rd Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, September 18th at Greenbriar Hills Country Club. Registration is now open on our website at stvstl.org The cost is $150 per player or $600 for a foursome. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Please

consider sponsoring a hole for $100. This can be done as a family or in recognition/memory of a loved one. Further

details can be found on our website or by contacting the church office: 314-231-9328 or email: [email protected] Don’t procrastinate in registering as the teams sell out fast.

We are trying to get musicians to play for our guests during our meals nights from 5-6PM. Guitar, keyboard or banjo players, along with vocalists - soloists, duets, trios - for contemporary, blues, country or blue grass music. If you know any bands who might donate their time and talent, please have them call Tom McCrackin at 636/405-1033 or email him at [email protected]

INTERESTED IN BRINGING HOLY COMMUNION TO THE HOMEBOUND?

Some parishioners are no longer able to come to Sunday Mass on a regular basis. Others might temporarily be unable to be with us in our worship space on Sunday. However, these conditions need not prevent them from a vibrant participation in the source and summit of our lives as Christians which is the Holy Eucharist. If you have a desire to help the homebound maintain their connection to Christ and His Church, please come to a meeting on Sunday, August 27th, from 10:15 to 10:45 in the large classroom. Deacon Terry will explain what is entailed in a commitment to serve as a Communion Minister to the Homebound and answer questions you might have before deciding to undertake this ministry. If you will not be at St. Vincent De Paul Parish on that Sunday but would like to serve in this ministry, please speak with Deacon Terry personally or contact him at [email protected].

The year 1617 was decisive with regards to Vincent de Paul’s vocation. Two significant events occurred: on January 25th, the feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, Vincent preached “the first sermon of the mission” in Folleville (France). That event took place several days after having heard the confession of a dying

man which made Vincent aware of the spiritual abandonment of the poor country people. Some months later, in August of the same year, as pastor in Châtillon, Vincent experienced the material poverty and misery of his parishioners … an event that transformed him into the Saint of Charity. Vincent understood that it was necessary to instruct the people, to make them aware of their dignity as children of God and to teach them the truths of God’s plan for humankind. The events that took place in Folleville and Châtillon during the year 1617 mark the origin of the Vincentian charism and for 400 years the followers of Vincent de Paul, the members of the Vincentian Family, have dedicated themselves to service on behalf of the less fortunate members of society.

PRAYER FOR THE 400thANNIVERSARY OF THE VINCENTIAN CHARISM

Gracious Lord, in this 400th anniversary year of the birth of our Vincentian Charism, we are blessed to continue the spirit of St. Vincent in his corporal and spiritual service of those who live in poverty. We thank you for the call to accompany and assist those who are vulnerable and forgotten in our world. We celebrate our solidarity with thousands of brothers and sisters around the world who carry on the Vincentian spirit in their work for those in need. Fill us with St. Vincent’s zeal, respect and love for those who suffer on the margins of society. Lead us always in the ways of Divine Providence, following the example of Jesus Christ as St. Vincent teaches us. We continue seeking your will and finding your face in the faces of those who live in poverty, fear and suffering.
