From the earliest years of our

education, we have been taught

about the honesty and strength of

Abraham Lincoln, the president

that preserved the Union and

delivered some of the most famous

speeches in history. However,

Lincoln did not enter the White

House as the country’s sixteenth

president until he was fifty-one years

old. What happened in the years

before his presidency, and how did

they contribute to his character and

his decisions as president?

In Abraham Lincoln, Esq.: The

Legal Career of America’s Greatest

President, editors Roger Billings

and Frank J. Williams explore

Lincoln’s law practice prior to

his service as president and its

profound effects on his legal

philosophy and the country as a

whole. The editors, along with an

impressive list of contributors,

analyze records of Lincoln’s cases

and courtroom procedures, both

debunking myths and illuminating

his development as both a lawyer and political leader.

Abraham Lincoln, Esq. paints a portrait of his legal

specialties, reputation, and the historical significance of his

career. Lincoln historian Mark E. Steiner’s “Does Lawyer

Lincoln Matter?” examines Lincoln’s image, comparing

how other lawyers evaluate the former president with how

the American public tends to recognize Lincoln. In “A.

Lincoln, Respectable ‘Prairie Lawyer’,” Brian Dirk delves

into accounts of Lincoln’s merit as a lawyer from the

1850s and 60s. Billings and Williams also investigate

specific aspects of Lincoln’s legal career in Illinois, considering

his role as a debtor-creditor, his experience with real-estate

cases, and his skills as a legal writer. In their essay,

“Competence, Diligence, and Getting Paid: Lincoln’s

Lessons for Today’s Ethical Lawyer,”

William T. Ellis and Billie J. Ellis

Jr. evaluate Lincoln with an eye

toward encouraging today’s lawyers

to examine their own practices and

legal aspirations.

Billings and Williams conclude

the collection with a thorough

examination of how Lincoln used his

legal training and experience to

manage national and international

issues during his presidency. In

“Abraham Lincoln as Practical

Constitution Lawyer,” Mackubin

Thomas Owens discusses Lincoln’s

fight to preserve the Constitution

under the pressure of the Civil War.

Lincoln argued that the document

was crucial to the survival of the

republican government and the

continuation of a separation of

powers between branches of the

federal government. William D.

Pederson’s “President Lincoln: The

International Lawyer” specifically

evaluates Lincoln’s contributions to

international law during his

presidency. Pederson describes how Lincoln used his legal

training to prevent Europe from recognizing the Confederacy,

but also explains the advancements in international

humanitarian law made by the Lincoln administration.

By taking a look at an often ignored period in Lincoln’s

life, Abraham Lincoln, Esq. provides readers with compelling

insight to the most-well known president and his decision-

making process that shaped our country. Billings, Williams,

and their contributors eloquently and thoroughly explore

the nuances of Lincoln’s journey to national prominence,

delving into history to present a multifaceted account of

the experiences and lessons that defined his stance on ethics,

policy, and democracy.

Greetings once again from the GLPA! It has been nearly

two years since my first Fayette County Bar Association

newsletter article as the new President of the Greater

Lexington Paralegal Association. Now, the time has come

when I submit to you my final newsletter article.

By the time you read this, we will have just hosted the

22nd Annual KPA Conference. The KPA Conference

Committee worked tirelessly to make this Conference the

best ever. The Honorable Jim Newberry, Mayor of

Lexington, issued a Proclamation declaring November 12,

2010 as Lexington Paralegal Day in recognition of the 30th

Anniversary of GLPA and the hosting of the KPA

Conference. The Honorable Governor of Kentucky,

Steven Beshear issued a Proclamation declaring that

November 12, 2010 be recognized as Kentucky Paralegal

Day. We are so fortunate that both of these esteemed

government leaders have roots here in the Lexington legal

community and support the paralegal profession!

It has been a busy and productive year as the GLPA

celebrated its 30th year of existence. We hosted the NFPA

Region III Meeting and the KPA Conference. We hosted

social events that brought our members together to for the

chance to network with one another and make new

friends. We welcomed new corporate sponsors and

continued developing those relationships. We reached out

to the students at the institutions offering paralegal programs

and welcomed the opportunities to assist them in many

ways. We learned from the attorneys and other legal

professionals who have presented at our monthly CLE

luncheons. We appreciate that you continue to donate

your time to come and visit with us. We gave back to the

community with donations of our time, resources and

items of need to military personnel serving overseas.

We also spent the year looking back over our thirty

years and at the hardworking and dedicated paralegals

whose efforts brought this association to the present.

Through bi-weekly president email messages, it was my

personal goal to limit the amount of emails being sent to

the members while also providing them the information

that they needed to know regarding upcoming GLPA

events. At the same time, I used the opportunity to provide

them with a glimpse of the past. This goal was accomplished

by reviewing copies of archived newsletters dating back to

the early days of what was then the Lexington Paralegal

Association. It was always interesting to see that those

paralegals faced many of the same problems and issues

that we do today. But it was also interesting to see the

evolution of the GLPA and NFPA and to realize that

some things were changed and then returned to what

worked before.

As I close this final article as GLPA President, I

especially want to offer my heart-felt thanks to my firm

Frost Brown Todd LLC and to my attorneys, Jack

Cunningham, Bart Rogers and Valerie Marshall. They

allowed me the opportunity to serve my profession in this

capacity for two years and I appreciate their support more

than I can say. I also ask you to always remember to

thank those hard-working paralegals in your office. Those

who have served on the GLPA Board over the past couple

of years are certainly some of the best ones out there and I

am honored to have served with them.
