In 10 years, Micah has birthed a hospitality center, secured a permanent location for a cold weather shelter, opened a respite house for

those discharging from the hospital with no place to go, launched an effort to house the most vulnerable homeless and developed an income assistance program that stabilizes those who had run out of options for sustainability. Our approach, rooted in

community partnership and one-on-one relationship, has resulted in a reduction in chronic homelessness of 58%. And it has helped many to think differently about what might be possible for those whose needs have

otherwise been written off.

As we talk to people today about the source of our success, we often point to a core belief that has guided our

efforts from the beginning. It's the idea that homeless people experience the same life altering "problems" that housed people do, but there is one thing that a person without a fixed address always lacks that a person

who remains indoors maintains--support network. In our early days, we thought we could wrap someone with support, move them to sustainability and continue in relationship with them at the same level that we started. But as we have

grown and more people have been adopted into our Micah family, we have found ourselves stretched thin and unable to support our original friends in need as deeply as we would like. A few years ago, this led us to understand the need for to build in

some form of "mentoring" that provided long-term support network for those we had pulled from homelessness, while freeing our staff to take on new folks who were actively living on the street.

October12-15,2015 The Scriptures command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” As our world and our communities become more diverse,

how do we have loving, respectful interactions with neighbors of other faiths while still being true to our call to share the Gospel? Join author, speaker, and public theologian Brian McLaren and other critical thinkers as we explore what it means to be Christian in a multifaith world.

This conference will take place at Montreat Conference Center, in Montreat, NC. Those who can sign-up and make a deposit of $200 by August 16 will be able to participate in this trip for $468.50 single occupancy/$321 double occupancy. After this date the rates increase by $75/person. We recognize this is a short time to make a decision and financial commitment. Please talk to Patti for

more information about registration. You may also go online to www.montreat.org to learn more about the conference and the other leaders who will be sharing from their particular faith backgrounds.

ParentBookDiscussion

Wednesday,August19th

6pm-8pmParents, join us for learning and group activities as we discuss how to build a positive self image in our

children....and maybe even improve our own! We will journey together through the book, You’d be so Pretty If...by Dara Chadwick and use it to guide our discussion. We will gather at church for light

snacks and opening activities beginning at 6pm and our program will begin at 6:30pm. You may choose to purchase the book and read along or just come for discussion.

This will be a fun and interactive time of fellowship and sharing. The leaders are using the book as a guide but the content of our time together will not require you to have read it in order to participate fully. Please RSVP by August 16th so we can plan accordingly for

snacks. Childcare will be provided upon request. RSVP by emailing Erin Silver at [email protected] or by calling the church office at 540.373.4402. You may also visit the event page on Facebook.

We spent a long time trying to find a model that would offer the level of support our folks needed. At one point, we even tried to create our own. Then one day, a friendly lady from James City, Virginia came up to learn about Micah. It so

happened that she was running an effort called 3E Restoration that equipped, empowered and encouraged faith communities to walk in relationship with those who were transitioning out of chronic and street homelessness. We became fast friends and have worked closely together this year to share ideas and trade insights on each others areas of expertise.

With the help of 3E Restoration, Micah has now piloted a new effort to train up people and their faith communities to be the support that is so desperately needed to break the cycle of homelessness and extreme poverty. Our first group of mentors, a combination of existing Micah volunteers and

members of the pilot Common Ground church, completed the training this past Spring. And three of our friends in need have just begun to benefit from their love and gracious hospitality. Already, we have been richly blessed by the gifts and hearts of those who have signed on to walk with our friends in

need. We can't wait to learn from them and plan our next steps, so that more willing people can come alongside us and participate deeply in the lives of those Micah has touched. In the meantime, there are a few ways you can get involved in our effort to build a stronger support network for our

friends in need: • A mentor is only as strong as those supporting them. Consider signing up to help those that are actively working with our friends in need with the smaller tasks that help them overcome their barriers. Giving a rides, helping teach

people to shop for groceries, cook, clean their house or prepare a resume, for example, can support an essential part of what it takes to help someone learn to stand better on their own two feet. • Only have a day a week to offer, but really want to be involved in helping people problem-solve their different

needs? Consider volunteering at the hospitality center as guide to those who many need to be connected to any number of community resources, such as the Moss Clinic, charity care, transportation and prescription assistance. Many current and former professionals have helped us over the years in this way, and we can always use more folks that will give us at least one day a week.

• The idea of mentoring a friend-in-need really peaks your interest? Let us know, so that we can begin to get to know you and put your name on our list for the next training. To learn more about any of these opportunities, please

contact Lori Yelverton at 540-479-4116x13 or [email protected]

FallAdultStudyOptions

WednesdayEvenings6:15-7:00pm

September16–October21 This year’s Wednesday Evening Adult study options are described below and you are invited to preregister for the course of your choice. This will help us to provide adequate

resources for the options offered. Please plan to be a part of these groups that will meet at 6:15pm, immediately after prayer meeting. These course offerings will take place in the first 6 weeks of our Fall Programming, Wednesday, September 16 through October 21. By the end of September, there will be a listing of course options to be offered from November 4 - December 16.

Seven Signs In The Gospel of John there are “Seven Signs” described in what some scholars describe as the book of signs contained within John 1:19 to 12:50. We are told in John’s gospel

that these signs are recorded so that you may believe. Come explore these signs, as Mark Houghton leads us in this Bible study in Ferrell Hall

Faith Symbols in Photography Do you enjoy photography? Do you take photos with your phone or with a camera and like to share these images with others? Come share in an exploration of faith symbols in photography. This group will be led by Joe Garnett and Margaret Ingram in room C209.

Writing Advent Devotion Guides Each year as we celebrate Advent, we prepare our hearts for the coming of the Christ Child. We often produce Advent Devotion Guides to help you intentionally enter this holy season. Would you like to share some of your

thoughts and creative writing skills with our congregation, or perhaps just with a small group who will work together to create a devotion guide for this Advent. Susan Graham will lead this group in C211 and if you cannot attend in person but would like to participate, there will be a way to participate virtually!

Exploring the Way A small group exploration of intentional personal spiritual journeys! This group will be led by Linda Stott and will meet in C216.

Preparation for All Saints Day Theresie Houghton and Susan Snellings will lead a discussion of what All Saints Day is, how it is observed, offer some ways to intentionally remember the lives of those saints who go before us, and plan a portion of the

worship service on Sunday, November 1 – All Saints Day! This group will meet in C210.
