to do this through discussions withgroups such as the Diocesan AdvisoryCommittee and The Victorian Societybecause of the history and nature of thebuilding. This limits what we can do.

We are looking to open up the spaceinside the church so it can be used moreeasily by community groups and be-come more welcoming as a building. We also hope to create a heritage areawithin the church which can tell thestory of the church, highlighting some ofthe rare features that St. Andrews has. This would also include a restoration ofthe wall-paintings. To achieve thesechanges, we will need to remove someof the pews in the church. Currently wecan seat 244 people in the pews plus 40in the sanctuary end of the church, nextto the altar. We are looking at a numberof alternative ideas for removing somepews, probably resulting in a loss ofaround 90 seats. The remainder will bemore than enough to accommodate thevast majority of services. The churchwas full for one recent funeral but that isa rare occasion. We have discussed los-ing the pews at the altar end but theDAC would not support this because ofthe religious significance of this end ofthe church and indeed our clergy alsowould be unhappy about such a plan. Acurrent proposal is to lose the front tworows in the main body of the churchwhich would make movement easier andhelp at funerals, as well as the pews onthe north aisle of the church and some ofthose at the very back, which wouldmake baptisms easier because peoplecould gather around the font. We wouldthen make the entrance to the churchmore open and accessible with a glasspanel so more light would come into thechurch, when the main doors were open.We hope that local groups would behappy to use the church for their meet-ings and events, in this larger space.Obviously these proposals will changethe church but if we are to preserve the

PLANS FORST. ANDREW`S CHURCH

As Churchwarden, I wanted to let thevillage know what the PCC has beendiscussing over recent months. You areprobably aware that over the last twoyears we have been working very hardto make the essential repairs to thebuilding, in order to preserve it in all itsglory and history. There were signifi-cant problems with the roof and thewalls, causing damp and damaging theinternal fabric of the church, includingthe valuable remains of medieval wall-paintings. The organ also had sufferedfrom these problems and was in urgentneed of restoration, just to keep it inuse.

The costs involved in this programme ofrestoration were huge – and indeed stillare – so we had to apply for grants fromvarious church organisations and Heri-tage Lottery funding. We did receivesubstantial sums and as part of the ap-plication process, we have had to raise aconsiderable sum of money ourselves,as part of match funding. We are verygrateful for all the support that the vil-lage has given us, through our variousfund-raising events and continuing pro-jects such as the “mile” of 20 pencepieces.

Considerable work has been done on thechurch and the roof is in a good statenow and the issues of damp are beingreduced. But more still needs to bedone and we have applied for furtherfunding to complete the programme. Akey element of our application formHeritage Lottery is to show that this willbenefit the community as a whole. Ifwe cannot do that, we are unlikely to getany money. One obvious way to dem-onstrate the church`s value to the villageis to increase its use as a communityresource, so we have been looking atproposals for achieving this. We have

building and complete the programme ofessential repairs, we need to secure thefunding. I would welcome commentsfrom the village because the church is partof the community and whilst the regularSunday congregation are very importantto the church, so too is the wider villagecommunity.

New Beginnings:

It has been quite a whirlwind start to thenew school year, not least the fact that Inow have to get used to being ‘Head ofSchool’. For those who haven’t met me,I’m Sue White, I began teaching at TheNorman in September 2013 followingseveral other teaching posts – the mostrecent before The Norman being 10 yearsat Hilgay Primary. As a youngster, I grewup in Littleport, attended school there be-fore attending secondary school at Ely.After that I attended Kingston Universityin Surrey where I gained my teaching de-gree. On qualifying as a teacher my firstteaching role was with Year 6 children atWatton Junior School – I haven’t workedoutside of Norfolk since! There is some-thing very special about Norfolk, and al-though I was born in Cambridgeshire andbought my first property in Suffolk, I nowlive in the heart of Norfolk at Shipdhamwhere my daughter has just begun herschool life as a reception child.

Since beginning at The Norman I have feltvery welcome by all that I have comeacross in the school and the wider com-munity. Northwold is a beautiful villagefull of wonderful people, interesting build-ings and an amazing school. I am de-

lighted to have been offered the role ofHead of School and very much lookforward to fulfilling this role.

As is the ‘norm’ for The Norman, wehave ‘hit the ground running’. We havewelcomed 2 new fantastic teachers toour fold along with some new receptionchildren and a Year 5. We are enjoyingthe fact that we have returned to being a4 class school as this helps to ensure thateach child can have greater attention insupport of their learning.

Our Year 2 children have begun theirForest School work at Dawkin’s Covertunder the watchful guidance and leader-ship of Vicky Eyles and came back fromthe woodland on Monday with massivegrins on their faces. They will be usingtheir time to focus scientifically andcreatively – for example, they will bebasing some of their Hansel and Gretelwork in the woods to add authenticity totheir learning.

In Year 5 and 6 the children are explor-ing a ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ and askingthe over-riding question: What can I findout next? As part of their learning theywill be exploring all things Viking…who knows what they will dig up!

Years 3 and 4 are embarking on a learningjourney ‘on board’ HMS Beagle alongwith a close study of Charles Darwin – welook forward to sharing some of theirwriting with you in the near future.

Our new reception children and the Year 1children are following a theme titled:‘Getting To Know You’, they are focusingon the local area and their own familiesand generally getting to know the schooland surrounding area.

Next time I write, we will have celebratedour Harvest at St Andrew’s and I’m surethere will be much more to share withyou.

Dog Fouling. It has been bought to the attention of the Par-ish Council that dog fouling on public foot-paths in Northwold has started to become areoccurring problem. I am sure that all resi-dents that own dogs will assist us by ensuringthey collect their dog’s waste and dispose of itresponsibly. The Parish Council hope that thisnotice will encourage all dog owners to actresponsibly, and to improve the problem with-out the need to introduce fines for offenders.

We achieved a lot during our meeting thismonth! Twelve of our members went tothe recent Breckland Group meeting atFeltwell and they all had a wonderful eve-ning. Many tried their feet at countrydancing and, by all accounts, there was agreat deal of laughter involved – but sadlyno photographs! The Autumn Federationwas a slightly more staid affair but thosewho went found the speakers very inter-esting.

Some of you may have spotted a newbench near the children’s play area. Aspart of the WI centenary celebrations allInstitutes were encouraged to organisesomething special. Northwold WI de-cided to present the bench to the villageand we hope that parents and grandparentswill find it a comfortable place to sitwhilst they keep a watchful eye on theiryoungsters as they play on the swings etc.

After the routine business was completedwe held our Annual Meeting. The Secre-tary read out a summary of what we hadbeen doing throughout the year. ThePresident, in her annual address, hi-lightedthe friendships that are formed between

members and how WI archives can re-capture the spirit of the times in whichthey were written. After she hadthanked the Committee and the mem-bers for all their work during the year

she made aspecial presen-tation to Rose-mary. Rose-mary is an ab-solute stalwartof our WI andshe has justcompleted 52years of beingon the Com-mittee! Shehas, over the

years, held nearly every single role thatexists on the Committee and we have allbenefitted from her dedication. We willstill call on her wealth of knowledge ofall matters WI related but she is taking awell-earned rest from those monthlycommittee meetings. Thank you again,Rosemary, from all of us.

the internet and you are trying to find thenumber of a company or organisation, justGoogle the name and you should be pre-sented with contact details. To find domesticnumbers, read on. If you have access to theinternet, go to site telecom-tariffs.co.uk thenfollow the link “View residential tariff costs”and then the link “Directory Enquiry Codes –118” for access to a directory provided byMagenta Systems in Croydon, listing aboutfour hundred 118 sites. This site tells youwhat each 118 company will charge for theyour enquiry, as charged to your BT bill. Most sites charge between £2 and £3 butseveral cost less. For example, 118 801charge 50p. I have tested their system andmy call was answered immediately and I wasgiven the number within seconds, with noattempt to make more money by offering toconnect me. I did try another number (30p)but it went to answering machine.

Never accept a company's offer to connectyou, as the subsequent cost of the call willalways be a great deal more than you arepaying normally.

Michael's wife, refusing to give in to thelooks of growing old, goes out and buys anew line of expensive cosmetics guaranteedto make her look years younger. After alengthy sitting before the mirror applying the"miracle" products, she asks her husband -"Darling, honestly, if you didn't know me,what age would you say I am?" Lookingover her carefully, Michael replied: Judgingfrom your skin, twenty; your hair, eighteenand your figure, twenty five”. “Oh, you flat-terer” she gushed. “Hang on a minute” hesaid “I haven't added them up yet!”

A fifteen-year-old came home with a Porscheand his parents began to yell and scream,"Where did you get that car?" He calmly toldthem, "I bought it today." "With whatmoney!?" demanded his parents. "We knowwhat a Porsche costs." "Well," said the boy,"this one cost me £15." The parents began toyell even louder. "Who would sell a car likethat for £15!?" they asked. "It was the ladyup the street," said the boy. "Don't know hername -- they just moved in. She saw me ridepast on my bike and asked me if I wanted tobuy a Porsche for fifteen pounds.""Oh mygoodness!" moaned the mother, "she must bea child abuser. Who knows what she will donext? John, you go right up there and seewhat's going on."

So the boy's father walked up the street to thehouse where the lady lived and found her outin the garden, calmly planting flowers. Heintroduced himself as the father of the boy towhom she had sold a Porsche for fifteenpounds and demanded to know why she did

Facebook and my body imageAs we all know, our body image is a subjectivepicture in the mind of our own physical ap-pearance, derived from what we see and thereactions of others. Some people are proud oftheir body image but the majority seem to bedissatisfied. If people fixate unreasonably upona feature of their body image with which theyare dissatisfied, this is known as Body Dys-morphic Disorder and a typical example is thepoor adolescents, stick thin, who think they arefat and develop anorexia.

I have a similar problem in reverse! My bodyimage is tall and thin and, no matter how manymirrors and shop windows tell me otherwise, that image remains. However, mirrors andshop windows, although unsettling, can beignored and the body image can remain untar-nished.

A new phenomenon has arisen which is reallyputting my own body image in danger. In theold days, we took photographs and destroyedthe unfavourable ones before sharing themwith others. Along came Facebook! Nowadays, any event shared with our children and theirfamilies results in pictures being posted onFacebook to be viewed by their thousands offriends and contacts. These pictures includeunflattering photos of me, the sort I wouldhave destroyed straight away, and, as the cam-era always makes me query my body image, everyone can view the photo as often as theylike. Last Sunday, one son posted a photo ofnine of the grandchildren on Facebook. An oldfriend of mine from years ago posted a “like”and wondered whether or not he had a pictureof Management and me. Bang! Within sec-onds, he had sent her, and the rest of the world,an appalling photo of the two of us, lookingless than sylph-like. Now, the photo is “outthere” for ever more.

Do you use Directory Enquiries when youneed a telephone number? If so, be very care-ful! In the old days, our only option was todial 192 and British Telecom would give us thenumber for 40p (8/- in old money) which Ialways considered expensive. This service wasabandoned in 2003 to open the market to com-petition and BT now recommends telephoning118 118. This is a service owned by the Ameri-can company Knowledge Generation Bureauand BT spends millions promoting the number. If you use this service, you will be charged£5.74 for the number (tough luck if they are ex-directory) and, if you are foolish to let themconnect you, they will charge you an extra£2.99 per minute that you talk.

So, what should we do? If you have access to

it. "Well," she said, "this morning I got a phonecall from my husband. I thought he was on abusiness trip, but I learned from a friend he hasrun off to Hawaii with his secretary. Then ap-parently she stole all his money and strandedhim there! Well he called me, without anymoney to his name, and asked me to sell hisnew Porsche and send him the money.
