Fashion Show Script: Write 2-3 sentences about of the complete outfit describing the features of your garment that you have selected to wear in the Fashion Revue (include accessories). This information may be included in the fashion show script. Do not mention the obvious such as “long sleeve white” shirt, or “blue” dress. Be creative, have fun.

Figure Types: The human body comes in a variety of shapes and sizes and is predetermined by genetics. While research studies have

described figure types is numerous ways, most body types can fit into several categories for male and female figure types. While there is no perfect body type, there are ways to use design principles and elements to create the best look possible with the clothing we wear. However, the current stereotype of the ideal female body shape is moderately tall with a body balanced vertically, an hourglass figure and an oval shaped face. For males the ideal is tall with a balanced vertical body and a trapezoid torso (that is, broad shoulders and chest tapering to medium waist and hips) and an oval face. If you understand what your current shape and proportions are and know a few style guidelines for your shape you are well on your way to looking your best. You can create the illusion of a desired body shape by choosing clothes to create the illusion of the ideal proportions. It's all about balancing your perceived shape to the ideal shape (or moving your appearance in that direction). Of course understanding your current shape doesn't rule out changing your shape if needed through diet and exercise. The media often gives an unrealistic impression that all people should fit into one body shape mold. The truth is the models may not even fit into this “ideal mold” because they are often airbrushed and altered by computer software to make the “perfect image”. Sometimes the person in the advertisement is not even a real person, rather a computer-generated model! This media message may be harmful to how individuals view themselves and may cause them to adopt unhealthy eating and exercise habits as they strive to fit the mold.

Promote a positive body image: It is important to understand media and evaluate what is seen in the media. Promote a healthy

lifestyle rather than worrying about body shape or weight. It is important to remember that being skinny does not equal being healthy. Every

body shape can be healthy if a combination of healthy eating and regular physical activity is maintained. Help out others by telling them when

they have done a good job. Every body shape can be healthy as long as healthy life style choices are adopted. Healthy eating and regular

physical activity are important to everyone and every body type. The idea is to make the most of whatever shape you are now.

Briefly describe how 3 of any of the design principles and elements can be used to give you your best look possible with the clothing you wear. 1. 2. 3.

A: My Inspiration Board An Inspiration Board starts the design process to design your style. It’s a visual interpretation of your design

thoughts or process. It is a collage or presentation of images, text, samples of objects in a composition of the

choice of the creator. Designers use boards to develop their design concepts and to communicate these concepts

to others and board helps to translate a concept where words may fail. The inspiration board is a building block

for your final collection. Your inspiration board should be reflected in your final collection. Research is an

important part of discovering your ideas which can be found from architecture to nature. Research fashion

history, fashion magazines, retail windows, go shopping at the mall etc., and don’t limit yourself only to the

world of fashion to discover your inspirational theme for your design. Keep a collection of ideas for fabrics,

textures, color and anything that inspires you as you look for your inspiration. There are many tutorials on each

topic available online.

Describe your inspiration. Judges should be able to discover the following details in your inspiration board:

Describe Research: What or who did you

research? The fashion history, movies,

celebrities, new textiles, architecture, engineering,

nature, etc. You do not have to use all of the

research in your inspiration board, but list your

research.

Describe Images: Cut from magazines,

print, wall paper, or use your imagination.

Include in your inspiration board those that

communicate your concept.

Describe Color Story: Paper, paint,

fabrics and/or ink, pencil, markers

Describe Fabric Story: Include samples

if you have them available

B: My Design Development Developmental Sketches are part of your design research. Developmental sketches help you to decide on

your final design features: color, lines, buttons or zippers or both, sleeves whether short or long or no sleeves,

etc. Developmental sketches are a building block to your collection. Required Croquis are included in this

portfolio packet that you must use. Points will be deducted if required croquis are not used. It is highly

recommended that you complete each of the developmental sketches chosen to include in your portfolio

submitted. There are many online tutorials on h ow to sketch fabrics and accessories for your designs

Practice, practice, practice. Use tracing paper over chosen croquis to experiment with colors, fabrics, textures, shading

until you have at least 10 developmental sketches. For example, change to one of the other croquis, change the neckline,

sleeve length, change the skirt style, collar, change garment from two-piece to one, or add a vest. Keep the details of

garment such as darts, belts, and accessories. Not every design idea you experiment with will work for your final

collection. Experiment with different figures and poses until you find figures that fit your style. Find three individual

figures that fit your needs. This developmental sketch work is to help you generate enough ideas from which to choose

your best work for your final collection.

Use tracing paper to sketch your figures in pencil over the croquis. Do not sketch on the photocopy of croquis. Revise

sketches until the designs look as professional, clean and neat as possible. Sketch the back of your garment as well,

especially if it is important to the design concept of your garment. Window tracing is a technique used by taping the

tracing paper over the croquis and then taping the paper onto a window.

Write “notes to self” on developmental sketches. Judges will read your notes to help them understand your concept.

Add color until you get the results you want. There are many online tutorials on how to add color to your sketches.

Practice until you find a final colored version for your collection. You may cut out and glue your sketches on different

paper. Be careful with the glue chosen that it does not ruin your sketch and your hard work.

Submit 10 full developmental sketches. These drawings will show your sketching work, coloring, progression, and

experimental design ideas.

o Sketch figures as individuals and as groups.

o Number your developmental sketches in order of creation.

o Include notes to self on the developmental sketches to explain or add a description of your developmental

sketches for the judges.

o Remember, points will be deducted if required croquis are not used. Do not sketch on the photocopy of the

croquis and do not show the croquis lines on finished sketches.

C: My Collection A collection, part of a line of clothing in the fashion industry, is made up of a group of clothing designs put

together to communicate or tell a story of the designer's inspiration and new trends for the fashion brand during

a particular season and for a particular market. Your collection should reflect the work in your inspiration

board and developmental sketches. Your portfolio collection will consist of your 4-H U outfit plus three (3)

other design sketches chosen from development.

1. Once you define your style with the Inspiration Board, create your own collection using your own

style reflected in your Inspiration Board and Developmental Sketches.

2. Along with your 4-H U outfit, select the three (3) designs from your developmental sketches that

represent your best work and communicate the connection of your inspiration and designs for the

collection.

3. Select poses that will show designs to their best advantage but that also work well as a group. This

is important so that your work will have a strong “group” feel and will communicate the “look” or

signature of your collection.

4. Pay attention to design elements/principles in your sketch.

Required in your portfolio are two (2) pages described below:

a. The first page of your collection is the best sketch of the outfit that you will wear for 4-H U

Fashion Revue Contest and Fashion Show.

i. Include a sketch of the back of your garment if it is important to your design concept.

ii. You may also include “up-close” detail sketches if these details are important to your

design concept on a different sheet.

b. The second page of your collection is the grouping of three (3) figures that show off your

collection.

i. These three figures must be on the same page and communicate the signature of your

collection showing a “look” or signature common among the three outfits.

5. Write a brief description of your collection and how it connects with the inspiration board.
