Fashion Revue Rules and CategoriesAGE DIVISIONS: Junior: Age 9-11 as of January 1, 2014

Intermediate: Age 12-13 as of January 1, 2014Senior: Age 14 and up as of January 1, 2014. A member is eligible to participate as a senior until December 31 of the calendar year in which they turn 19.Primary: Age 5-8o Are not eligible to enter State or Sectional Fashion Revue (SFR) but are encouraged

ENTRY CATEGORIES1. Traditional: The focus is to showcase the member’s sewing skills and ability to coordinate an outfit.

o As skill levels range from beginning to advanced, entries in the Traditional category will also vary. The entry might be a one-piece dress or it might be three coordinated pieces.

o A beginning member may sew one garment and purchase coordinating pieces to complete the outfit, for example a sewn jumper worn with a purchased blouse. The entry form would state which garment(s) are sewn.

o If the Traditional ensemble has additional sewn garments which cannot all be worn at once, for example a 4-piece suit containing coordinating pieces, the additional garments may be carried. All the coordinated sewn pieces will be evaluated.

o There is no separate category at State Fashion Revue for wool, cotton or costumes. If the outfit is sewn from yardage, regardless of fabric content, it is a Traditional entry.

o Additional entry requirements for Traditional are the one-page supplemental form, a photocopy of the pattern envelope(s) if a pattern was used, a 2x3 inch swatch of each fabric or thread used.

2. Consumer Science Purchased has a $40 limit for everything showing including shoes, jewelry and accessories, but not sales tax.

o Receipts are required, with purchases made during the 2014-2015 4-H year. Receipts can be handwritten if from garage sales, thrift shops, etc.

3. Upcycled category involves taking at least one existing garment and turning it into a completely new, different, and usable garment. The outfit must also include an accessory made from something that wasn’t originally an accessory.

o A before photograph is required showing the beginning garment.o Refashioning clothes and accessories is a great way to revamp your wardrobe on a budget.

Instead of throwing away unwanted pieces of clothing or household items, be innovative and transform them into items you can actually wear.Ideas include:

A dress from a man’s shirt with embellishments from neckties Transform a t-shirt into a ruffled shrug A prom dress made from men’s tuxedo pants and a silk scarf Pants from an old jacket using the buttons to fasten the new pockets A hat made from a sweater (accessory) A belt made from jeans (accessory) A shoulder bag from pants (accessory) Jewelry from paper clips, pull tabs, and newspaper (accessory)

4. Jacket Challenge – tiered requirements - Junior: construct a jacket using any pattern, any fabric. Intermediate: construct a jacket and one other garment. Senior: construct a jacket and other pieces to complete an outfit. The entry must be sewn by the member as part of his/her 4-H Clothing &

Page 4: Fashion Revue 2014 Packet word.doc.docx - …ceventura.ucanr.edu/files/203242.docx  · Web viewVentura County 4-H Family Consumer Sciences PDC Presents. FASHION REVUE 2015. Saturday,

Textiles project. What is a jacket? For this category it covers the upper body, has sleeves of any length and opens in the front. Other construction details such as fasteners, collar, lapels, pockets, lining, etc. are optional, determined by sewing experience.

5. Costume Challenge - use any technique, any materials, and any pattern to create a costume. It does not need to be sewn from fabric but it does need to be made by the participant, not purchased. There is no 4-H project requirement. The theme and costume must be 4-H appropriate.

o The member may make the pattern larger or smaller to fit and embellish the apron but not change the basic design.

o Sew or purchase additional garments to compliment the apron.o The State Fashion Revue entry form asks the member to describe the purpose of the apron,

so be thinking about this during the apron design.

Please Note: County medalists have the option of proceeding directly to 2015 State Fashion Revue on May 30, 2015, at UC Davis Olson Hall, without attending Sectional Fashion Revue. Forms for Sectional must be sent together from the County 4-H Office. Entries for State are made by the individual medalist.

Sectional forms and information can be found online at: http://4h.ucanr.edu/Resources/Volunteers/Councils/Sectional/South/South_Section_Field_Day/Ventura County must send one judge to Sectional or our members will not be judged.

Additional State Fashion Revue Rules:o Traditional, Upcycled and Denim Challenge entries must be sewn as part of the member’s Clothing &

etc. must be at least fingertip length. o Other categories offered in other years, will not be included at 2014 State Fashion Revue. Only the 5

categories listed above are included for 2014 at the state event. o Counties may offer additional categories but all outfits qualifying to advance to State Fashion Revue

must meet State Fashion Revue guidelines.o A member may only enter one outfit in State Fashion Revue.

outfits.o Participants will briefly tell the judges what they made or purchased, and what they learned;

approximately 30 seconds, no note cards.o Participants should be prepared for questions from the judges.o The judges will review the entry forms and accompanying information.

Ideas for Writing a Fashion Commentary

Purpose: Give information about the model and the outfit. Make both the model and the outfit interesting to hear about.

1. Give information about yourself and your interests, such as where you're from, other 4-H projects, years in 4-H, future plans, summer job, etc.

2. Give inspiration for, reason or occasion for which outfit was planned. This could be the theme for the commentary. "Terry had the first football game of fall in mind when she chose this autumn plaid. She'll be sure to ..."

3. Keep sentences short and easily readable.

4. Create an appealing mental picture with descriptive words. "Ice-creamy tones of raspberry and lime...."

5. Avoid the obvious. Rather than saying "yellow dress" make it "sunny" or "lemon". Rather than "it buttons up the front" say "buttons brighten the front".

6. Use ACTION words as much as possible. "Buttons march", "Belts circle the waist", "A flaring hem swings".

7. Tell the biggest problem you encountered in sewing the outfit, what sewing technique you learned. Saying you put a sleeve in six times can encourage some of your audience who are less skilled.

8. Add some humor, something amusing that happened while sewing. "In her rush to finish the dress, Sue put the zipper in upside down!"

9. If there are two parts to your outfit, such as a coat and dress, mention the outer layer first.

10. Use alliteration (words beginning with the same sound) such as "flirty flounce".

11. Read it aloud when completed. Does it flow smoothly?

12. Be brief.

Commentary must:Include:o Your Nameo Your Club Name
