Fares from 2 January 2005

Transport for LondonDear Passenger

During my first term of office thequality of service on London’sBuses was transformed and fareswere cut considerably. Thechallenge now is to build on theseachievements and improve other parts of thetransport system, especially the networkinfrastructure.

In August, the Government provided a 5 yearfunding and financing package that now gives usthe certainty needed to deliver new transportlinks and improved services across London. However, part of the Government’s provision isthrough allowing TfL to borrow for capitalinvestment. After 5 years, TfL’s debt servicingcost will rise to £250 million a year.

This is why I have made the difficult decision to raise fares to provide the funding we need. On the Tube, fares will increase slightly aboveinflation and on the buses, where significantimprovements have been made, by more. However, the average bus fare (allowing forinflation) is still no more than the amount paidwhen I was first elected in 2000.

Oyster Pre Pay will continue to offer significantsavings and cheaper Pre Pay fares will apply on theTube and DLR from 1900 hours on Mondays toFridays and at all times over weekends and publicholidays.

Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London and Chair of Transport for London
