January School Holiday Fun!

Who said DISCO was dead? Not at CFC PLAYFORD hosted by Zac the Northern Sound Volunteer a great group of children and toddlers boogied to cool beats and bubbles.

January is a very hot time of the year. The thought of playing outside amongst nature is not often a consideration for many when the thermometer rises past the olden day ton (36 de-grees). What a delight it was then, to see so many families turn up to spend the day with the Mobile Junk and Nature playground. Kids, and parents, played together under the shady trees, creating stick cubbies, mud pies, crushing rocks into body paint, and jamming on the junk instruments. Many kids were cover head to toe in mud (nature’s sunscreen, they called it), and even a few parents sported generous lashings of the brown body paint. Australia has a beautiful climate, and getting out and enjoying the weather is a big part of na-ture play. I run nature play sessions all year round, and am often asked, “what do you do when the weather is bad?” My reply is “there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices”. Check out my website for more details about a Mobile Junk and Nature Playground session www.mobilejunkandnatureplayground.com.au

During the School Holidays Bugs n Slugs spent a great day visiting the Communities for Children holiday program in the garden at the Elizabeth Mission. In the morning, participating children and families learned all about invertebrate animals through play, exploration and discovery. The beautiful community garden provided the perfect backdrop to discover creatures in the garden; while activities like snail racing and insect instruments were a hit in the interactive bug zone under the verandah. CfC provided a very tasty and healthy lunch in the shade of the garden and we all sat around making new friends, meeting new people and munching our lunch like the hungry caterpillars we’d discovered in our story earlier. After lunch an older group of children learnt all about keeping stick insects as pets, then they made their own hatchery to take home and have a go at hatching their own stick insects. All in all, a fantastic day was had by everyone and it was great to see so many parents and carers enjoying the experience with the children. The success of the day was largely due to the great planning and hospitality of the CfC staff Lorelle, John and Jordan, and of course to the fabulous bunch of kids who were so fantastic to me and to my animals. Thanks for letting us bug you! If you would like Bugsnslugs to come and bug you at your community centre, kindy, school or child care facility, contact [email protected]

GARDEN CRAFT AND GIANT GAMES

CfC held two Garden Arts, Crafts and Giant Games mornings in the January

School Holidays. Children enjoyed exploring the garden, fun craft

activities, playing in the tents and with the giant games!

Communities for Children activities encourage getting out and about.

Natural spaces are great places for Giant Games and little campers.

Try putting up a tent in the garden and serving lunch in there.

CLAYMATION

Nearly 30 children attended the school holiday sensation that was Claymation! A great opportunity for children to get creative and have their ideas for a short movie captured forever on film. The kids produced some really amazing works and said “that was so much fun”. Look out for Cam from GooRoo Animation at the April School Holiday Workshop on 20th April. Check out goorooanimation.com for more information or to watch some of their presentations.

What is bullying?

Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Online bullying refers to bullying through information and communication technologies, e.g. the internet or mobile devices. Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying. In short, bullying is an ongoing misuse of power involving a

pattern of harmful verbal, physical or social behaviour.

What are the impacts of bullying on those people who are bullied?

Being bullied can result in a person feeling miserable and powerless, so the response of those around that person is important in making a change. Research shows that bullying can have a negative impact on students' academic performance, self-esteem, coping skills, and can increase anxiety and unhappiness. Feeling unsafe or being unable to focus on learning at school can have its own long term impacts. Staying away from school to avoid being bullied can lead to additional problems. Other impacts including physical health complaints and fatigue, mental health impacts such as depression and anxiety, and social implications including self-doubt and reluctance to participate in group activities.

What can I do if I am being bullied in person?

If you are being bullied, and you feel safe to do so:

say 'No!' or 'Stop it!' firmly

walk away

try to act unaffected or ignore the person

talk to a trusted adult at the school or at home

ask friends, parents or teachers for their help to deal with the issue safely.

Having the courage to talk to someone is important if you are being bullied. Sometimes, just telling the bully to stop can be effective. If that doesn't work ask friends, parents or teachers for their help to deal with the issue safely.

If your child talks to you about bullying:

Listen - Calmly and get the full story Reassure - your child that they are not to blame Ask - your child what they want to do about it and

how you can help Visit - www.bullyingnoway.gov.au Contact - the school Check in - regularly with your child

What can I do if I am being bullied online?

If you are being bullied online (cyberbullied), and you feel safe to do so:

don't respond to the message or image

save the evidence as a screenshot if you wish to use it as part of dealing with the bullying

block the sender and delete the message

report the situation to the website or Internet Service Provider

Talk to trusted people - friends, adults, teachers, parents and police if necessary.

If your child is bullying others?

It can be upsetting for find out that your child has bullied others. Stay calm and learn more about our child’s

behaviour so you can respond appropriately. Children who bully others need help and support to learn bet-ter ways of relating to others. Focus on positive solutions

Ask your child why they are behaving this way

Explain why bullying is unacceptable

Apply your family rules and consequences for their behaviour

Consider what's going on at home

Teach conflict resolution skills

Discuss the behaviours with the school

Get more help for your child
