District Director Welcome
Welcome District 13 to our 2016 Fall Conference!!
The theme is Mission I’m Possible. What a powerful theme!Mission has many definitions and I am going to use the definition of a specific task or job that a person or group is charged to complete. Our Fall Conference has tapped many great leaders who will accomplish this task. The second part of our theme is I’m Possible. As the great actress Audrey Hepburn has quoted, “Nothing is Impossible; the word itself says I’m Possible."
Our fall conference will begin with Claudette Biers and Julia Gleason and their magnif-icent team of “special agents” who will intrigue our members with superb, sensational Friday Night fun activities. The Fun Night chair and their agents will involve every par-ticipant to embrace the opportunity to be number one in having fun!
Saturday will be impressive and memorable with our keynote speaker Anne Barab, presenting an outstanding message that will captivate the audience. The day will con-tinue with super motivational educational workshops and of course the stars of the show: our best humorous and table topics speech contestants in District 13!!
Throughout this weekend you will be impressed with the brilliance of the leadership and excellence in the entire conference team! These special agents are led by our very own Conference Innovative Agent (CIA) Dawn Staropoli. Thank you all for helping us enjoy achieving Mission I’m Possible!

9Where Leaders Are Made 9
Club Growth Director Welcome
Welcome to the District 13 Fall 2016 Conference and to the Pittsburgh Marriott North! Today will be a day to devote to educational experiences, networking with new and old Toastmasters friends, and lots of fun!
The theme of this conference, Mission I’M Possible, holds a very special meaning for me. I attended my very first District 13 Conference in the Fall of 2013 at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, PA. A lot of firsts took place at this conference. I attended my first District Council Business Meeting (which reminds me, pick up your credentials for today’s business meeting early today!!) and was awarded District Toastmaster of the Year. In Summer 2012 began a string of District leadership roles for me, starting as Area Governor for two terms, then Division Governor, and now serving this District as a senior team member, as Club Growth Director. I truly pushed (and still am) my boundaries!
As an introvert and INFJ, I never thought of myself as a leader or Toastmaster of the Year and certainly never thought that I would ever be part of the District Trio. I encourage you to walk up to your District Leaders, push your boundaries, and tell them you would like to be an Area Director next year! Area Director is one of the best experiences in Toastmasters that a member can have, and I encourage you to take advantage of the wonderful opportunity.
This year, we are challenging clubs to increase their membership to 20+ members - a number of strength that positions clubs to provide a dynamic club environment and to endure change. As our clubs grow and become stronger, our members will transform into stronger more confident leaders.
As we strengthen our existing clubs, we also work to establish new clubs. There are many opportunities within our District for community, corporate, specialty and university clubs. With increased options for times, dates, locations, and types of clubs, more people will be able to benefit from the Toastmasters expe-rience.
I would like to thank every member of the Conference planning committee, for without them, this confer-ence would not be the amazing experience you get to have today. A special thanks to your chair Dawn Staropoli, as well as to chairperson(s) identified for future conferences. It is a major leadership commitment, and I thank you for volunteering to serve.
Finally, have fun and enjoy the day! I look forward to connecting with you!
Best regards,
Sleepy Opossum

JUDGING CRITERIA
Content (55%)
Speech Development is the way the speaker puts ideas together so the audience can understand them. The speech is structured around a purpose, and this structure must include an opening, body and con clusion. A good speech immedi-ately engages the audience’s attention and then moves forward toward a sig nificant conclusion. This development of the speech structure is supported by relevant examples and illustrations, facts and figures, delivered with such smoothness that they blend into the framework of the speech to present the audience with a unified whole.
Effectiveness is measured in part by the audience’s reception of the speech, but a large part is your subjective judgement of how the speech came across. You should ask yourself such questions as “Was I able to determine the speaker’s pur-pose?” “Did the speech relate directly to that purpose?” “Was the audience’s interest held by the speaker?” “Was this speech subject appropriate for this particular audience?”
Speech Value justifies the act of speaking. The speaker has a responsibility to say something meaningful and original to the audience. The listeners should feel the speaker has made a contribution to their thinking. The ideas should be impor-tant ones, although this does not preclude a humorous presentation of them.
Audience Response reflects the audience’s reaction to the speech. Did the speech hold the audience’s interest? Did people understand and laugh at the humor?
Delivery (30%)
Physical presentation of a speech carries part of the responsibility for effective communication. The speaker’s appearance should reinforce the speech, whether profound, sad, humorous or instructional. Body language should support points through gestures, expressions and body positioning. The speaker makes effective use of and stays within the designated speaking area.
Voice is the sound that carries the message. It should be flexible, moving from one pitch level to another for emphasis, and should have a variety of rate and volume. A good voice can be clearly heard and the words easily understood.
Manner is the indirect revelation of the speaker’s real self as the speech is delivered. The speaker should speak with enthusiasm and assurance, showing interest in the audience and confidence in their reactions.
Language (15%)
Appropriateness of language refers to the choice of words that relate to the speech purpose and to the particular audi-ence hearing the speech. Language should promote clear understanding of thoughts and should fit the occasion precisely.
Correctness of language ensures that attention will be directed toward what the speaker says, not how it is said. Proper use of grammar and correct pronunciation will show that the speaker is the master of the words being used.
JUDGE’S CODE OF ETHICS1. Judges will consciously avoid bias of any kind in selecting first, second and third place contestants. They will not
consider any contestant’s club, area, division or district affiliation. Nor will they consider any contestant’s age, sex, race, creed, national origin, profession or political beliefs. They will demonstrate the utmost objectivity.
2. Judges will not time the speeches and will not consider the possibility of under-time or overtime when judging a contestant’s speech.
3. Judges will support by word and deed the contest rules and judging standards, refraining from public criticism of the contest and revealing scores and ranking only in accordance with official policy.

Occuptation: As a consultant, researcher, writer and designer, I have developed multimedia programs with learning methodologies that result in measurable behavioral change. PeopleLearn®, my current business enterprise, delivers these interactive learning modules via online computers and facilitated live workshops and conferences. My current project focuses strongly on the type of behavioral change that allows individuals and families to successfully survive upcoming disasters as a result of careful planning and simulated "terrestrial" emergency preparedness exercises!
Background Intelligence: There needs to be a strong emphasis on effec-tive organization, leadership, and paying it forward. With 30 years experience in leadership, training, and workshops, my design and orga-nization skills, along with those developed in three years as a Toast-master, Club President, Area Director, Division Speech Contest winner, and Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM), provide valuable expertise and rich insights into the needs of DTM candidates.
Your Mission: As you are guided through the discovery and the develop-ment of your mission, you will "map" out a strategy beyond your week-ly or bi-weekly encounters to achieve your ultimate objective—Mission DTM. This mission, should you accept it, will be abounding with adven-tures and learning experiences. Through the exploration of some little known opportunities and important clues, you, the DTM candidate, will focus on successfully maneuvering through the necessary requirements to achieve your mission! As a mentored adventurer, you can meet the rewarding challenges and emerge to run the gauntlet as a distinguished leader and communicator with all the attendant accolades of a DTM award recipient.

Content (55%)
Speech Development is the way the speaker puts ideas together so the audience can understand them. The Table Topics™ response is structured around a purpose, and this structure must include an opening, body and con clusion. The response is supported by relevant examples and illustrations, facts and figures, if appropriate, and is delivered smoothly.
Effectiveness is your subjective judgement of how the response came across. Were you able to determine the speaker’s purpose? Did the speech relate directly to the given question or topic? Was the response clearly and logically presented?
Delivery (30%)
Physical presentation of the response carries part of the responsibility for effective communication. The speaker’s appear-ance should reinforce his or her response.
