PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS (BIRTH TO 5)

WHERE CHILDREN LEARN, GROW & THRIVEAt the Y, we regard each child as a unique individual who needs to be understood, guided, encouraged and appreciated. At this early age, play is a child’s most important form of learning and development. We provide programs and activities where children learn, explore, develop athletic skills, build a positive self-image and develop social relationships with other children.

Ensure your children are kindergarten-ready. Enroll them in a YMCA pre-K program today.

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS (AGES 6 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS)Our parent/child swim lessons promote water enrichment and aquatic-readiness activities for children and their parents or other trusted adults. In this program, the developmental experiences of each child are used to build the child’s self-confidence in and out of the water. Parents learn from the instructor’s example how to guide their children through positive reinforcement and appropriate praise.

There are four levels based on developmental abilities:• Shrimp (6-8 months) Child can control their head and sit with support

from the hands.• Kipper (9-12 months) Child can sit without hand support and stand with

support from the hands.• Inia (13-18 months) Child can stand without support and walk with or

without support or aid.• Perch (19-36 months) Child can run and jump.

Instructors are certified in the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Program.

YOUTH PROGRAMS (6-12)

to their peers,” says Grant Buhr, who developed and runs the program.

During National Youth Violence Prevention Week (March 23-27), this year's Story Squad producers from South Chicago shared their aspirations and experiences through impactful stories at a special listening event on March 26. The program, which started in 2014, has grown to 15 participants. The three youth who completed the program last year returned to serve in leadership roles.

“What I've seen most in the youth as we've gone through the curriculum this year is an increase in emotional intelligence, self-awareness and the ability to connect difficult feelings and emotions with their experiences,” adds Grant. “I also saw a sense of pride that their stories are heard because they have much to teach the rest of us.”

For more information, contact Grant Buhr at 773.418.4240 or [email protected].

SWIM LESSONSSince 1885, the YMCA has been a pioneer in swimming education. Literally millions of people have learned to swim through the Y’s perfected program. In Y swim lessons, participants learn and practice new swimming skills and feel a sense of achievement from mastering something new that they can enjoy the rest of their lives.

The curriculum focuses on self-reflection, critical thinking and storytelling skills to help the youth analyze and process the causes and impact of violence in their communities. “The youth learned what kind of support they might need when difficult thoughts and feelings surface and how to extend that support

Y ACHIEVERS For more than 40 years, the Achievers program has served as the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago’s signature college readiness and career exploration program. Founded in 1971 at the Harlem YMCA in New York City, this nationwide program fosters the academic, personal and career development of minority, underserved, and first-generation college-bound students in grades 7-12.

Program goals are to:

• Introduce youth to diverse college and career options

• Remove barriers to college access

• Help youth develop a positive sense of self and build character

• Raise the academic standards of youth

• Provide role models whose success and knowledge inspire youth to set and reach their goals.

The Achievers program operates through a cohort model of teenage youth at public schools and within YMCA membership centers. Achievers utilizes the evidence-based 6to16 curriculum, developed by the University of Chicago’s Urban Education Institute, to assist youth with the complex college-going process and ensure that they succeed in and graduate from college.
