he University of Texas at San Antonio College of Business has been ranked the No. 1 graduate business school in the nation for Hispanics by Hispanic Business magazine in its September 2009 edition.

"We are honored to be recog-nized by Hispanic Business," said Lynda de la Viña, dean of the UTSA College of Business and Peter Flawn Professor of Eco-nomics. "This ranking speaks to the quality of our academic programming and the services that we provide our MBA stu-dents and for our community. It elevates the college into the upper echelon of business schools in the nation."

This is the second year UTSA was included in the listing and the 12th year Hispanic Business conducted the study. The rank-ings (in order) included UTSA,

UT-El Paso, University of Miami, UT-Austin, Stanford University, University of New Mexico, Dart-mouth College, Florida Interna-tional University, University of California at Berkeley and Uni-versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Hispanic Business ranked the top 10 business schools nation-ally based on a number of crite-ria illustrating commitment to diversity including enrollment of Hispanics, percentage of full-time Hispanic faculty members, student support services, gradu-ation rates and graduate pro-gram reputation. The ranking also included the top universi-ties in medicine, law and engi-neering.

The UTSA College of Business offers a comprehensive business curriculum at the undergradu-ate, graduate and doctoral lev-

The gift, Vale-ro's largest to UTSA, supports the university's mission to pro-vide access to higher education and the company's goal to be a good corporate citizen by strengthening the communities where it does business.

"This gift demonstrates the Valero Foundation's commit-ment to education in San Anto-nio," said Valero Chairman and CEO Bill Klesse. "It is our hope that these scholarships will help people get a quality education

alero Energy officials today an-nounced a $2.5 million gift to support graduate students in engi-neering and business, helping to strengthen the pipeline for leader-ship in these fields. The invest-ment also advances UTSA's bid toward recognition as a premier research university.

"The strategic vision that moti-vated this gift and its impact to change lives reflects Valero's keen focus on building better communities," said UTSA Presi-dent Ricardo Romo. "Even in tough economic times, Valero again demonstrates leadership in philanthropy by investing in opportunities for San Antonio students to be successful."

UTSA will establish two graduate fellowship funds -- each with $1.25 million -- in both the Col-lege of Engineering and the College of Business, two of the fastest growing colleges at UTSA

TSA will receive $500,000 from the University of Texas System over

the next five years to develop a unique Graduate Program Initiative emphasizing biosensors and regen-erative medicine.

Of the 37 proposals received by the UT System from its nine academic and six health institutions, only seven were funded and only two were awarded to academic institu-tions. UTSA's Graduate Program Initiative builds upon existing pro-grams in the College of Engineering

and College of Sciences to prepare students for careers in academia, federal agencies and the biomedical industry.

"This program will provide qualified students with an exciting opportuni-ty to pursue interdisciplinary re-search in science and engineering," said Dorothy Flannagan, Dean of the UTSA Graduate School. "This unique program will allow students to inte-grate courses and research training in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering and/or chemistry into their educational curriculum."

"Funding from this grant will foster and formalize new innovative collab-orations among participating faculty and students," said Anson Ong,

USAA Foundation Distinguished Professor and chair of the UTSA Department of Biomedical Engineer-ing. "Each academic discipline has a different way of thinking and a different way of solving problems. By working together, the students in this program initiative will better understand the complex health care problems as well as finding novel and innovative solutions to solving these problems."
