UTSA received two distinguished
recognitions recently. One from The
Academic Ranking of World
Universities, which is performed by
Shanghai Jiao Tong University and
another from Times Higher
Education. UTSA was named as one
of the top 500 universities in the
world in research, citations and
performance by The Academic
Ranking of World Universities and
was listed in the "100 Under 50" by
Times Higher Education. The "100
Under 50" ranking evaluates
research, citations, teaching,
international outlook, and
innovation.
The Academic Ranking rates more
than 1,200 universities in 43
countries globally, and UTSA is one
of only 150 U.S. universities to make
the list. This achievement, along with
our ranking in Times Higher
Education as one of the world’s top
100 universities under 50 years old,
is an acknowledgement that UTSA is
among the most respected
institutions in education.
According to UTSA president, Dr.
Ricardo Romo, distinctions like these
are “another major recognition in our
advancement to top-tier status.”
UTSA earns global recognition
for academic excellence
UTSA doctoral student receives Jess Hay Chancellor’s Fellowship
UTSA doctoral candidate Jeffrey Howard received the Jess Hay Chancellor's Fellowship; a student
research award, which was established by former University of Texas System Chairman of the
Board and Regent Jess Hay. Howard is completing his Ph.D. in Applied Demography and is
studying health disparities and the related socioeconomic consequences for Texas. He plans to
graduate in May of 2014.
Howard’s research is focused on the effects of continual stress on morbidity rates and the
implications of observed differences for potential health interventions. He will use the
accompanying $10,000 award to continue his research in public health disparities along social and
economic lines.

The Society for Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos & Native Americans (SACNAS) has selected San Antonio to host the 2013 SACNAS National Conference October 3-6 in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and UTSA will be a sponsor. This year’s theme “Strengthening the Nation through Diversity, Innovation, and Leadership in STEM” commemorates 40 years of dedicated service fostering the success of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native American scientists. Nearly 4,000 participants and 300
exhibitors and recruiters are expected to attend the three-day conference offering scientific symposia, professional development and leadership development sessions, keynote speakers and poster and oral presentations. Programming is specifically tailored to support undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and career professionals at each transition stage of their careers as they move towards positions of science leadership.
UTSA will be hosting a networking reception on October 2nd and a campus tour. Many representatives from the university will be participating as exhibitor throughout the conference, including the Graduate School RecruitingTeam. UTSA adds a new M.A. in Philosophy program for
Spring 2014
UTSA—The Graduate School is proud to announce that it is adding a Master of Arts in Philosophy program.
The M.A. in Philosophy is within UTSA’s College of Liberal and Fine Arts and is accepting applications for
the Spring 2014 semester.
The philosophy program is intended for students who wish to develop an advanced competence in
Philosophy prior to pursuit of a J.D. or Ph.D. degree, or employment in and outside of academia. UTSA
philosophy students have secured admission into the top law school and philosophy graduate programs in the
country.
The course sequence aims at providing students with a broad background in philosophy, while honing
students’ philosophical skills to include rigorous thinking, the ability to give coherent arguments for one's
own position, and to communicate reasoned arguments clearly and compellingly. Students will benefit from
a diverse curriculum and flexible course requirements, and have the ability to choose either a thesis (30
hours) or internship (33 hours) track toward completion of the degree. Students in the program will also
engage with world-renowned philosophers at our annual Brackenridge Philosophy Symposia.
The philosophy department faculty are distinguished teachers and scholars who publish regularly in leading
presses and journals, and present at prominent local, national, and international conferences. Faculty have
received the President’s Distinguished Achievement Awards for Research and Teaching Excellence, an NEH
Fellowship, as well as various other research grants and awards.
The Graduate Advisor of Record for the program is Dr. Jill Hernandez. She can be reached at
[email protected] or by phone at 210-458-5352.
The Graduate School works to provide our graduate students with
the opportunity to take learning beyond the classroom. These workshops are free to UTSA
students & their guests.

Doctoral Scholarship.
Oliveira earned his M.S. in Finance at UTSA in May 2013 and his research interest is corporate finance and he wants to focus on the areas of mergers and acquisitions,

the international arena.
Oliveira began his doctoral program this fall semester and plans to pursue a career in academia after earning his doctorate.
Renewable Energy Research Opportunity With the College of Engineering
Project
Electrical Load Forecasting – A New Paradigm to Forecast Building Energy Demand from Solar Irradiance.
UTSA has been developing intelligent computer codes and sky and cloud imaging technology that could
potentially revolutionize the renewable energy industry. The investigators plan to use these technologies to
better predict the amount of energy consumed in buildings in a wide region by incorporating the weather and
irradiance information obtained from the solar irradiance forecasting tools. The student will be establishing the
correlations between solar irradiance and temperature with the energy demands from buildings using data analytic
tools. The project begins this semester (Fall 2013).
Qualifications
M.S. or Ph.D. student passionate for problem solving
Programming experience using MATLAB is a MUST
