A Faith-Based Guide Combining

Readiness Milestones, Basic Faith Truths, and Simple Activities for Parents and Their Children

Page 2: Faithful Beginnings Readiness Guide

Dear Friends,

As the mother of five children and grandmother of two, I understand many of the stresses and challenges we all face as parents. We work hard to help our children grow and de-velop in body, mind and spirit, and our hearts’ desire is to see them flourish. The Faithful Beginnings Readiness Guide can help them do just that.

It is my privilege and delight to share this valuable resource with you today. Combining readiness tools, basic faith values, and activities you can do at home, the Readiness Guide will equip you to help your children succeed—at home, in school and in life. As you use this guide, please:

• Ask God to equip you on the journey of faith and parenting. • Look to your own place of worship for support and guidance. • Spend time with your little ones—you will both benefit from sharing life’s teachable moments together. • Use the Family Activity Journal in the back to highlight your family experiences.

Also, remember that you are never alone! Much to my delight and relief, God’s faithful love guides us as we raise our children. Isaiah 40:11 has meant so much to me over the years, and I hope it will encourage you today:

He tends his flock like a shepherd:He gathers the lambs in his armsand carries the close to his heart;he gently leads those that have young.

May God bless and inspire you and your children.

Warmest regards,

Faithful Beginnings consists of faith leaders, educators, and community leaders committed to reaching the youngest children in our communities. We are an initiative sponsored by Smart Beginnings South Hampton Roads, an entrepreneurial non-profit organization created by business, civic, and philanthropic leaders to help ALL children enter kindergarten ready to succeed in school and in life.

Faithful Beginnings brings the faith community together to support families and the youngest children in our community. We support families and children through the following efforts:

—Making congregations aware of the importance of focusing on the early years for our children; and supplying them with tools and resources to educate the families in their congregations.

—Increasing the accessibility and affordability of early care and education opportunities in nurturing, high quality learning environments for low-income families.

—Speaking with a unified voice to our communities and elected officials about the importance of strengthening our children and prioritizing their earliest years.

—Empowering parents to be their children’s first and most important teachers.

Thank you—Thank God for your life and family.

Please—Ask God to help you every day.

Listen to and enjoy stories and nursery rhymes.

Enjoy stories about God.

Read an exciting Bible story like: -Noah’s Ark (Genesis chapters 6-9) -Jonah and the Whale (Jonah 1) -David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17)

Retell the story to your child and relate it to real life experiences (obeying, listening to God, rain storms, animals, rainbows, etc.).

Talk about the settings, characters, and feelings (ark, rain, fear, trust, promise, rainbow, etc.).

Use the story for pretend play—pretend to be Noah and gather up all the stuffed animals in your house; make a rainbow and talk about God’s promises.

Read a short portion to your child then have them repeat the story back to you.

Next, ask a few simple questions related to the story such as: What do you like about this story? What don’t you like? How did the characters feel (happy, sad, afraid, etc.)? Can you imagine yourself in the story? Who would you be? (Your child can be a person, a tree, a whale, a lion, etc. but make sure the story remains true to the story).

Now, act out the story with your child.
