"This is our first-ever presence at the Hong Kong fair. We have a total of 20 companies here showcasing a wide range of wines from Argentina. I like the show very much. Everything is good. Hong Kong has very good government support to the wine industry. We are keen to improve our presence in Asia. With its elimination of duties on wine, Hong Kong is going to become the gateway to Asia. We will particiapte in the fair again next year, hopefully with more companies." Mr Francisco Del Carril, Area Chief, Special Projects, Consejo Federal De Inversiones, Argentina "This is a great show with good atmosphere, a lot of space and a steady stream of buyers. We have a total of 61 wine companies from Australia this year. The fair is a part of our marketing plan for pomoting Australian wines to Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. It is a good place particularly to introduce our new wines to buyers. Hong Kong is really a hub of business." Mr Phil Ingram, Senior Trade Commissioner & Deputy Consul-General (Commercial), Australian Trade Commission, Australian Consulate-General, Australia "This is our first participation at the fair and we have 11 companies in our pavilion. They are mainly boutique wineries with a wide range of wines on display. It is important to make our presence in Hong Kong to expand our distribution network and maintain our position in the market. We are happy with the show as we can meet a large number of buyers, especially those from the Chinese mainland. We will return next year, hopefully with a bigger pavilion." Mr José Luis Valenzuela O., Europe & Asia Area Manager, Wines of Chile, Chile “We have brought some of the world’s best wines to the Hong Kong fair. HKTDC Press Release

Corks Pop as Wine & Spirits Fair Achieves Impressive Results 30 November 2009

The HKTDC Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair celebrated its second edition and a new slot in the calendar with increased patronage. The show, which was staged from 4-6 November 2009 at the downtown Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, featured 525 exhibitors from 34 countries & regions, attracted close to 12,000 trade buyers, representing a 36% increase over the previous event, which took place in Aug 2008. Around 35% of the buyers came from outside Hong Kong, and, of those, 60% were from the Chinese mainland. The final day of the show was also open to members of the public: more than 12,000 wine lovers came through the doors - a 23% increase over last year. Asia in the Driving Seat The on-site survey carried out at the fair revealed the fact that 87% of exhibitors anticipated that their business would grow in 2010; a similar number of trade visitors felt the same. Both groups said they were more optimistic over demand for wine in China and Asia than in other parts of the world. Hong Kong is ideally placed to benefit from this focus: 92% of exhibitors and 85% of trade visitors think the city is already or is shortly expect to be the wine trading and distribution centre for Asia. Objectives Achieved Over 90% of exhibitors agreed that their objectives had been achieved and were satisfied with the show; more than 80% reported having received orders at the fair or said they were in negotiations as a result of contacts made at the fair. Around 80% of exhibitors said they were likely to return in 2010. Visitors were also overwhelmingly happy with the fair: 99% said they were satisfied with the show and 90% agreed that their business objectives had been achieved. A total of 90% said they were likely to return next year. Exhibitors and buyers of the fair expressed their appreciation of the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair. Mr Phil Ingram, Senior Trade Commissioner & Deputy Consul-General (Commercial) of Australian Trade Commission from Australian Consulate-General was very excited, "This is a great show with good atmosphere, a lot of space and a steady stream of buyers. Exhibitors Double for Wine and Spirits Fair 2009

Buyer Numbers at Fair up 36 Per Cent Over Last Year’s Edition3-6 November 2009

Sparkling Numbers More than 520 exhibitors from 34 countries and regions, double last year’s exhibitor totals, took part in the fair, which opened 4 November and closed today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Nearly 12,000 buyers attended the fair, a 36 per cent increase over last year’s inaugural edition.

The exhibitor total more than doubles that of last year’s inaugural wine fair. Exhibitors hail from six continents and include France, the fair’s Partner Country this year. In keeping with France’s role, a “French Night” reception will take place tomorrow evening, and a seminar on the “ABC Guide to Bordeaux Wine” will be held 6 November. Wines from Alsace, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Lyon and St Emilion will be featured at the fair, and French wine accessories will be on display at the fair’s Wine Gallery.

Thirteen new countries will participate in this year’s fair: Belgium, Greece, Lebanon, Moldova, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovenia, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay.

Exhibitors will showcase a wide range of wine, spirits, beer and other beverages, along with products and services related to production and logistics, accessories and equipment. Wine education, tourism and investment exhibitors are also represented, and buyers will be offered free corkage at about 100 downtown hotels and restaurants.

Wine and Spirit Competition Fair highlights include the inaugural Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition, run in partnership with the prestigious London-based International Wine & Spirit Competition. Attracting some 1,300 entries, it has emerged as the largest wine competition in Asia. A voting game will allow visitors to help select “The Most Beloved Wine & Spirits,” while a separate competition will determine “The Most Appealing Wine Label for the Mainland Market.”

There will also be more than 50 special activities, including wine-tasting sessions, master classes and seminars. The Asia Top Sommelier Summit will feature Andreas Larsson, Best Sommelier of the World, and Élyse Lambert, Best Sommelier of the Americas, together with other sommeliers and a variety of industry leaders. The HKTDC-Bonhams Wine Scholarships’ Auction, which takes place tomorrow evening, will raise money to help develop qualified sommeliers in Hong Kong.

Wine Conference A wine-industry conference, “Hong Kong – Asian Wine Hub,” will feature speakers from around the world, including Michel Bettane, CEO of Bettane & Desseauve and a noted wine critic, James Miles, Director of London’s Liv-ex Ltd, and David Wrigley, the International Development Director of the United Kingdom’s Wine & Spirit Education Trust. The Conference keynote address will be given by Yvonne Choi, Permanent Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development (Commerce, Industry & Tourism).

Hong Kong is steadily emerging as a wine-trading hub for Asia, where consumption of the beverage is expected to grow by 10 per cent to 20 per cent a year for the foreseeable future. Hong Kong alone saw wine imports soar by 40 percent in the first nine months of 2009, due largely to the scrapping of wine duties. Results from wine auctions held in Hong Kong this year are also encouraging. Industry players are predicting that Hong Kong may well become the world’s second-largest wine auction centre, surpassing London and trailing only New York.

Public Opening The fair is open to the public on its final day, 6 November, giving consumers a chance to sample wine, interact with winemakers and browse the Wine Gallery, which will showcase a wide variety of merchandise, including wine glasses, corkscrews, oak barrels and books on wine. In addition, the winning products of the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition, along with the winning entries in The Most Appealing Wine Label for the Mainland Market competition and all entries in The Most Beloved Wine and Spirits voting game will be on display at the Wine Gallery.

Australia to be Partner Country at 2010 Wine Fair 6 November 2009

Australia will be the partner country for the 2010 HKTDC Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair. The agreement was signed today between the Australian Government’s trade and investment promotion agency, the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade), and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC).

“It seems fitting that when it comes to announcing our partner country for next year’s HKTDC Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair, we are passing the baton from the Old World to the New World,” said HKTDC Executive Director Fred Lam. “From France, our great partner for this year’s event, we are pleased to welcome Australia as the partner country for the 2010 fair.”

“This is another sign of Australia’s belief in Hong Kong’s growing reputation as a prime international wine market,” said Australian Consul-General in Hong Kong Les Luck, who witnessed the signing ceremony.

Australia ’s 65 exhibitors represent the largest national contingent at this year’s fair. The country is Hong Kong’s fourth-largest supplier of wine. From January to September this year, imports of Australian wine to Hong Kong totalled US$28 million, a 22 per cent increase over the same period last year.

Most Beloved Australian wineries did well at the fair’s first Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition, which attracted some 1,300 entries. Australian wine also proved popular in the voting game for the “The Most Beloved Wine & Spirits,” the winners of which were announced today. The Down South Wine Company Ltd Five Mile Brook Shiraz 2005 took the Red Wine Group category honours, while the same company’s Boomerang Corner White Shiraz 2008 won the White Wine Group. Leung Yick Co Ltd’s Giffard Lychee, produced in France, was named winner of the Other Liquor Group award.

HKTDC Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair

23 November 2009 Agreement reached on details of facilitation measures for wine exported from Hong Kong to Mainland The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mrs Rita Lau, met the Vice Minister of the General Administration of Customs, Mr Lü Bin, in Beijing today (November 23) to discuss details of the facilitation measures for wine exported from Hong Kong to the Mainland, including agreement signing and implementation arrangements. Both sides also exchanged views on measures to promote the restructuring of the processing trade and to assist Hong Kong-owned enterprises to engage in domestic sales on the Mainland. The Financial Secretary announced early this month that Hong Kong had reached consensus with the Mainland Customs to provide facilitation measures for wine exported from Hong Kong to the Mainland. Mrs Lau and the General Administration of Customs agreed on the details of the facilitation measures today. According to the agreement reached by the two sides, the General Administration of Customs will provide two facilitation measures for wine exported from Hong Kong to the Mainland: (a) Pre-valuation of wine: Importers who have registered with the Mainland Customs may request the latter to carry out pre-valuation of wine duty 10 working days before a wine shipment is exported from Hong Kong to the Mainland. When the shipment arrives at a Mainland boundary point, the valuation unit of the Mainland Customs will normally complete the procedure within one working day; and (b) Compressing the clearance time at Mainland ports: For registered importers who have not chosen to carry out pre-valuation of wine duty, the Mainland Customs would strive to shorten the clearance time at Mainland boundary points. For wines which have been imported into the Mainland before, with submission of all the necessary documents and no irregularities identified after inspection, the clearance procedures will normally take no more than three working days. For wines which are new to the Mainland market, the valuation procedures will usually be completed within seven working days. If the customs clearance cannot be completed in time, the goods can still be released with a guarantee deposit. These facilitation measures will first be implemented as a pilot in Shenzhen. Subject to development, it may be extended to other major Mainland boundary points. Both sides will work towards the target of implementing the measures early next year.

Page 19: Fair Report - Portugal Global

HKIWF2009-Fair Report 19

Welcoming the agreement, Mrs Lau said it would enhance co-operation between the two customs authorities on wine matters. "The facilitation measures seek to increase transparency and certainty for Hong Kong's wine traders to better tap the business opportunities arising from increasing demand for wine on the Mainland. This will also help strengthen Hong Kong's position as the wine trading and distribution hub in the region," Mrs Lau said. "The measures will also provide incentives for Hong Kong's wine traders (particularly the smaller ones and/or those handling boutique wines) to export a greater variety of wines into the Mainland, thus providing more choice to the consumers there." Mrs Lau also thanked the General Administration of Customs for launching various policies to promote the restructuring of enterprises engaged in contract processing and to assist Hong Kong-owned enterprises to tap the Mainland domestic market. They include "restructuring without stopping production, carrying forward without appraising the value" and "single tax return for multiple domestic sales". Mrs Lau said that the measures are useful to the trade.

HKTDC Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair

The second edition of the HKTDC Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair, which is scheduled for 4-6 November 2009, will open up new markets in Asia and beyond for exhibitors. "For producers and distributors, this fair represents an enormous opportunity, " said Mr. Raymond Yip, Assistant Executive Director of Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), which is organising the event. In 2009, the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair will coincide with the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, a carnival event aiming to nurture wine appr "Appreciation of wine, both for consumption and as an investment, is really taking off in Asia and Hong Kong has emerged as the international wine trading hub for the region." Mr. Yip pointed out that Hong Kong is the only major economy in the world to impose no duty, no VAT and no sales tax on wine. "The fair attracts premier wine producers and distributors from all over the world, giving them the chance to expand their portfolio of wines and to meet a multitude of potential new customers. This will boost sales in the region even higher." Mr. Yip cited growth projections which will see Asian wine imports, excluding Japan, rising to US$1.5 billion by 2017. Growth projections show Asian wine consumption, excluding Japan, will double by 2017, reaching US$27 billion. Most recent figures - January to April, 2009 - show Asian imports soaring by 57% over the same period in 2008. In its first edition last year, the fair attracted 240 exhibitors from 25 countries & regions. The 2008 fair provided the opportunity for these exhibitors to meet

eciation of the public and visitors.

with 8,758 trade buyers from 55 countries & regions. Present indications are that the 2009 fair will feature around 400 exhibitors from 30 countries & regions. The fair is open to trade buyers only on the first two days. Exhibitors have the opportunity to test products in the local market on the fair's single 'open day' on 6 Nov. In 2008, over 10,000 members of the public flocked to the fair. The 2009 Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair builds on the success of the inaugural event. An exciting initiative is The Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition (HKIWSC). It will be organised by the prestigious London-based International Wine & Spirit Competition, which has been an international standard-setter for 40 years. The judging panel is equally prestigious, being composed of the foremost Asian-based experts in the field. A unique feature of the competition, will be the pairing of wines with Chinese cuisine. A new zone, Friends of Wine, will feature a variety of fine foods and gourmet products. As well as enabling producers and distributors of wine and spirits to reach out to new markets, the fair offers equally rewarding opportunities to related companies, such as manufacturers of glassware and accessories, logistics handling firms, promoters of wine tourism and suppliers of bottling equipment and materials. As a measure of the event's effectiveness, over 90% of exhibitors and buyers expressed satisfaction in 2008 and said they would return in 2009. Its success has been one indication of Hong Kong's growing role in the trade of wine and spirits in Asia. A number of overseas companies have now chosen Hong Kong as their Asian headquarters while internationally reputed auction houses such as Acker Merrall & Condit, Bonham, Christie's, Sotheby's and Zachys have begun conducting important wine auctions in Hong Kong.
