The College of Computer Studies Advanced Research Institute for Informatics, Computing, and Networking presented the lecture, “Topics in Computational Photography: Seam Carving, Inpainting, and Texture Synthesis,” by Visiting Professor Michael Brown of York University, Toronto, Canada last March 22.

Brown discussed “computational photography,” a broad group of imaging and processing techniques that enhance or extend the capabilities of digital photography to produce photographs that could not have been taken by a traditional camera.

Computational photography promises to change the way we think about photography. Seam Carving is a content-aware image resizing algorithm, developed by Shai Avidan and Ariel Shamir of Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs. It works by creating seams or paths of least importance in an image and automatically removing these seams to reduce image size or inserting seams to expand it.

Inpainting refers to algorithms that replace lost or corrupted parts of the image data particularly small regions or to remove minor defects.

Brown obtained his BS and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Kentucky in 1995 and 2001, respectively. He held positions at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, California State University–Monterey Bay, Nanyang Technological University, and National University of Singapore. He is currently an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence and the International Journal of Computer Vision.

The De La Salle University College of Law’s (DLSU COL) International Law Society and Licensing Executives Society International held a forum entitled, “Cybersecurity: Implementing the Data Privacy Act,” last March 2 at the DLSU Rufino Campus. The forum sought to shed light on the Data Privacy Act of 2012. National Privacy Commission Deputy Commissioner Domingo Mapa was the event’s keynote speaker.

Mapa’s lecture tackled the Data Privacy Act and how it ensures the protection of the fundamental human right to privacy of communication. According to the deputy commissioner, the Data Privacy

Act of 2012 is essential in forming a culture of trust in our society as well as in driving innovation and growth. Other speakers in the forum were from the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group and the National Bureau of Investigation. Representatives from companies such as Johnsons & Johnsons, Wells Fargo, Century Pacific Food, Inc. as well as leading law firms, such as ACCRA Law, Cruz Marcelo & Tenefrancia, and Cochingyan & Peralta attendedthe event.

The ASEAN Chemical Engineering Academic Association (AChEAA) will hold office at the Chemical Engineering Department of De La Salle University, following the election of DLSU faculty member Dr. Susan Roces as president of the Association.

The association is founded bythe ASEAN Regional Symposiumon Chemical Engineering (RSCE),an annual collaborative scientificmeeting of ASEAN chemical engineers

that was initiated by Tokyo Institute of Technology throughthe support of the Japan International Cooperating Agency. The RSCE advisers elected the AChEAA interim officers duringa meeting last February 8-9 at King Mongkut’s Instituteof Technology Ladkrabang in Thailand.
