MARTINI DANCE 2016 …. MARTINITANZ 2016

This is a very special year in regards to St. Martin, the patron saint of Burgenland, and of the city of Eisenstadt. St. Martin was born in 316 A.D. (data varies), roughly 1700 years ago, in West Hungary (Szombathely). Burgenland was then part of West Hungary, and for this reason, this saint was chosen as Burgenland’s patron saint. Numerous celebrations took place in honour of St. Martin in Burgenland, especially in Eisenstadt. We were happy to also honour St. Martin as we always do, with a dinner-dance. Saturday, November 12 was a beautiful evening! We were entertained by the GOLDEN KEYS and consumed our traditional foods of Schnitzel and Schweinsbraten. The 50/50 raffle was a lot of fun as was the distribution of the door prizes. Mrs. Gabriele Grof, the president of the Burgenlaender Club Toronto, would like to thank everyone for attending and many thanks to all the volunteers who made it all possible.

Das Martinifest 2016 fand am 12. November statt und wir freuten uns sehr den Landespatron des Burgenlandes feiern zu dürfen. Der heilige Martin wurde im Jahre 316 (die Daten variieren) also vor 1700 Jahren in Szombathely, Westungarn geboren . Damals war das heutige Burgenland Teil von Westungarn und demnach wurde dieser Heilige zum Schutzpatron des Burgenlandes erkoren. Unzählige Feiern zu Ehren des heiligen Martin fanden statt, vor allem in Eisenstadt. Auch ehrte Landeshauptmann Niessl eine Reihe von Burgenländern die sich besonders für das Land eingesetzt haben.

Wir freuten uns, dass auch wir diesen Heiligen feiern durften und zwar so, wie wir es immer machen: wir arrangierten einen Tanzabend der viel Freude machte. Die GOLDEN KEYS unterhielten uns und die frisch gebackenen Schnitzel und der Schweinsbraten schmeckten besonders gut. Frau Gabriele Grof, die Präsidentin des Burgenländerklubs Toronto dankte allen Besuchern herzlichst für die Teilnahme und die Unterstützung unseres Klubs . Eigens dankte sie den vielen freiwilligen Helfern die so ein Fest zu Stande bringen.

As mentioned earlier, on November 11th, the actual patron saint's holiday, many celebrations took place. For the capital city of Eisenstadt, Burgenland, this day is their “Kirtag”. Bischop Dr. Aegidius Zsifkovits celebrated a high mass at the Dom. The pedestrian mall peppered with activities, from offering culinary delights arranged by the farmers’ market to a children’s lantern parade (Ich geh’ mit meiner Laterne und meine Laterne mit mir…) to “Origami geese” that were crafted to the delight of all present. The goose is the traditional meal for this day. Visitors enjoyed listening to the “Bauernkapelle” of St. Georgen, a brass band that played for all that wanted to listen. Burgenland is enjoying the highest influx of visitors in years.An old tradition, to bless the new wine of the season was revived. The ceremony took place in front of the Esterhazy castle and all present enjoyed the “Jungwein.” It appears that our countrymen certainly know how to celebrate …

SPECIAL BIRTHDAY … This year, Helen Cseh was 80 years young. Helen is a longtime member of the Burgenlaender Club Toronto and a native of Strem, Burgenland. Helen was blessed with three children and is Omi to many more grandchildren. Congratulations Helen! Herzlichsten Glückwunsch! Wir wünschen noch viele gesunde und frohe Jahre im Kreise der Familie.

NEW MEMBER TO THE BURGENLAENDER CLUB TORONTO… We are deligthted to welcome a new member to the Burgenlaender Club Toronto: Mr. Paul Bischoff. We hope to see you Paul at many or all of our functions. A warm WELCOME to you from all of us! Just a gentle reminder to everyone: The Burgenlaender Club Toronto Inc. is a charitable, local and independent organization in the Toronto region open to Burgenlaenders, their descendants and all friends of Burgenland. It is headed by Mrs. Gabriele Grof (Tel: 416 281-5968). Membership fee per year is $10.00 for a single person, $20.00 for a couple or a family.

The Burgenlaender Club Toronto is affiliated with the world wide organization of Burgenlaenders, the Burgenländische Gemeinschaft, its head office is in Güssing, Burgenland., Austria. Membership fee (it is the fee for the quarterly magazine mailed to you from Burgenland) is $20.00 per year, the same for singles as well as for families.

The president of the Burgenländische Gemeinschaft is HR Prof. Dr. Walter Dujmovits, in Güssing, Burgenland, Austria. The representative of the Burgenländische Gemeinschaft for Canada is Eva Hergovich (editor of the Newsletter and the Website of the Burgenlaender Club TO, Tel: 905-826-7986).

The AUSTRIAN CULTURAL FORUM … has informed us of a travelling exhibition that will be open to visitors from Jan 27, 2017 to March 25, 2017 in Toronto (401 Richmond St. W., Toronto) and in Halifax, N.S. It is called “GETTING THINGS DONE” and deals with the evolution of the built environment in Vorarlberg. This is based on the “Vorarlberger Bauschule” known for its sustainable and innovative style. Sounds most interesting!

THIS MIGHT BE OF INTEREST TO YOU… VIELLEICHT IST DAS VON INTERESSE… - In Oberwart fand zum 10. Mal die traditionelle Genussmesse statt. 333 Aussteller boten ihre Ware an und allem Anschein nach war es ein grosser Erfolg. Auch die ungarischen und kroatischen Minderheitsgruppen waren vertreten und traditionelle ungarische und kroatische Gerichte waren besonders beliebt.

- In Oberwart, a culinary exhibition being held at this time of year, is especially popular. 333 exhibitors offered their products and it appears that the endeavour was very successful. Hungarian and Croatian minority groups also presented typical dishes of their nationality and created a lot of interest. This yearly event took place for the past ten years.

- Drei Jahre nach dem Burgenlandbesuch von Auma Obama, der Schwester des amerikanischen Präsidenten, der 19. jährige Desmond Muchoki aus Nairobe, Kenia ist im Hotel „Larimar“ in Stegersbach, einem Vier-Sterne Hotel ein Gastlehrling. Von Hoteldirektor Johann Haberl kräftigst untersützt darf der junge Mann alles was man über die Vier-Sterne Gastronomie wissen soll, lernen. Er kam auf Grund der Stiftung “Sauti Kuu” (von Auma Obama gegründet) nach Stegersbach. Der Hoteldirektor ist sehr zufrieden mit ihm, da Desmond sehr fleissig ist und wirklich viel lernen will. Auma Obama spricht fliessend Deutsch. Sie verbrachte 16 Jahre in Deutschland.

- Auma Obama, the sister of President Obama, visited Burgenland three years ago. As a result, a young Kenyan youth, Desmond Muchoki of Nairobi, Kenya, is apprenticing at the four star Hotel “Larimar” in Stegersbach. This is financed by Auma Obama’s Foundation “Sauti Kuu.” The foundation is based on the principle “help for self-help” and fosters youth and youth development. Hotel director Johann Haberl is very happy with Desmond’s performance as he is really willing to learn and to work. In November 2011, Auma Obama, founded her own foundation in Germany. Auma Obama is fluent in German, as she spent 16 years in Germany.

- ERSTAUNLICH! In Eisenstadt und Oberpullendorf wurden elektrische Tankstellen eingerichtet. Das heisst, in diesen beiden Städten können unsere Landsleute ihr elektrisches Auto aufladen. Wo ist eine elektrische Tankstelle in Toronto??

- AMAZING! Anyone with an electric car may now charge his/her vehicle In Eisenstadt and/or Oberpullendorf. Where is an easily accessible electric charge station in Toronto??

NEWS FROM OUR COMMUNITY…

This year was a very special year for the Burgenländische Gemeinschaft. This worldwide organization of Burgenlaenders was founded 60 years ago and celebrations took place for an entire week in the country of our birth. Additionally, the partner cities of Stegersbach-Northampton were established 40 years ago, the Burgenland Bunch, an international internet group with a Burgenland focus was founded 20 years ago. President Dr. Walter Dujmovits was delighted to welcome Burgenlaneders from all corners of the globe. From our community, the former president of the Burgenlaender Club Toronto Inc., John Brunner, took part in the festivities. A high mass was celebrated by HE Bishop Dr. Aegidius Zsifkovics in Güssing, Governor Hans Niessl hosted a reception for Burgenlaenders who came from far and wide. Beside the traditional picnic in Moschendorf that is held on a yearly basis, a play “JETZT GEHT’S AUFWÄRTS” by Edi Nicka had its debut. An absolutely marvellous program.

We too have reasons to celebrate: The Burgenlaender Club Toronto, Inc. was founded 40 years ago. At the same time, we are delighted to hear, that the governor of Burgenland, Mr. Hans Niessl with a dignitaries from Burgenland is planning to visit us in 2017. At this time, plans are preliminary but we would like to pass on the dates that were given to us. Maybe we could combine our anniversary with this special visit. We would love this combination.The following events are planned for the upcoming year:

Annual General Meeting: Usually, this get-together for members only is held in early April. We shall inform you as soon as the date and the location is established. Date and location TBA.Jahresversammlung: Das Datum und der Tagungsort werden in Kürze bekanntgegeben. Normalerweise findet diese Versammlung die nur Mitgliedern zugänglich ist, Anfang April statt.Government Delegation with Governor Mr. Niessl : The weekend of May 27th, 2017. As soon as we know of details, we shall let you know.Burgenlândische Regierungsdelegation mit Landeshauptmann Niessl: Das letzte Wochenende im Mai: 27. Mai 2017. Wie bereits auf Seite 3 in Englisch berichtet, die Jubiläumswoche der Burgenländischen Gemeinschaft war grossartig geplant und ein wahrer Erfolg. Der Präsident, HR Dr. Walter Dujmovits freute sich sehr, Burgenlaender aus der ganzen Welt begrüssen zu dürfen. SE Bischof Dr. Aegidius Zsifkovics zelebrierte eine Festmesse, Landeshauptmann Niessl gab einen Empfang und das Theaterstück JETZT GEHT'S AUFWÄRTS von Edi Nicka wurde uraufgeführt. Aus unserer Gemeinschaft nahm der frühere Präsident des Burgenlaenderklubs Toronto, Herr John Brunner teil.Hofrat Dr. Walter Dujmovits überraschte uns vor einigen Tagen mit dem Plan, dass eine burgenländische Regierungsdelegation uns im kommenden Jahr besuchen wird. Das freut uns besonders zumal auch wir ein Jubiläum feiern werden:

Vor 40 Jahren wurde der Burgenlaenderklub Toronto, Inc. gegründet.

Wenn es uns möglich ist diese beiden Events (die Regierungsdelegation und unser 40. Jubiläum) zu vereinen dann würde uns das sehr freuen. Sobald wir Näheres wissen, werden wir es bekanntgegeben.
