Improving Patient Compliance

Blueworks – Ophthalmologic Decision Support System

• Clinical compliance is one of the critical issues in healthcare.

• In ophthalmology, this is even a bigger issue due to the inherentdifficulty of self-administrating eye-drops.

• Even when someone tries to correctly apply it, he may fail

• In chronical diseases such as glaucoma, even if diagnosis andmedication are correctly defined, patients may go irreversible blind dueto poor compliance

• Clinical trial pose the biggest challenge, due to intentional non-compliance

Compliance Assessment

Blueworks – Ophthalmologic Decision Support System

Current Solutions:

• Weight drops flasks between visits

• Ask patients to keep compliance diary

• In clinical trials, dislocate volunteers to study center every day tohave someone apply them the eye-drops

• In clinical trials, rent an hotel or private clinic• Accommodate in there all volunteers• Accommodate physicians, nurses and researchers.

• Use electronical devices to get data regarding compliance

Electronical Devices

Blueworks – Ophthalmologic Decision Support System

• Existing devices only address drop application attempts, and not itsactual success.

•Typically, they store data regarding:• Date• Time• Flask squeeze / Drop leaving flask

• As mentioned, the big question in ophthalmology compliance is:

As the drop reached the eye ?

Is that eye the correct one ?

Proposed Solution

Blueworks – Compliance Validation System

- Under development *

Success

• Video-recording of each drop application

• Device inclination sensors assess optimal angle of usage

• Sound cues guide user to optimal angle of drop

• Drop-use and recording synchronization mechanisms*

This device has a Patent Pending

Failure

• Local data upload to study center via Bluetooth or USB

• Remote data upload to study-center via UMTS data-transmission *

• Drop-application success evaluation trough image analysis*

- Under development *This device has a Patent Pending
