Discovery Days Task Force has made the decision to have Discovery Days become a 3
day, 2 night event. They hope that the shorter schedule as well as the cost to attend will
encourage more youth to come to this event. This means that the schedule and class
times have changed! Make sure to check out the website for Discovery Days
at http://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/conferences-events/discovery-
days/index.html.

2019 Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show Qualification
Just a reminder that 4-H members in order to participate in the 2019
Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show, in Hutchinson, on Saturday,
September 14th, must have qualified in a specific discipline(s) at a state
qualifier 4-H or open dog show during the 2018-19 4-H year. Dog
members cannot just register for the KSF 4-H Dog Show without first
qualifying every year. The disciplines are showmanship, obedience,
agility and rally obedience. Most of these qualifier dog shows happen
during county fairs or invitational dog shows during spring and summer.
Later this winter and spring, visit here for a listing of dog shows open to
4-H members to qualify for the 2019 KSF 4-H Dog Show:

4-H Campference 2019
4-H Campference is for youth ages 12- 14 (before January 1, 2019), and
will be held June 23-26 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Participants will
experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the 'camp' activities
Rock Springs 4-H Center has to offer. This is a great transitional
opportunity, as these tweens go from being a camper to attending
educational conferences. 4-H Campference will feature workshops about
opportunities in the 4-H program and how to better interact with others.
Participants will meet other youth from around the state of Kansas.
Registration and detailed information will be the State 4-H Website in
March. Register early as the space will fill on a first come basis, and
Campference was full the last five years! Register online by May 15 (or
earlier it will close when it is full) and payment must be in the local
Extension Offices by May 15.
Fun was had by all that attended the Jr leader Christmas party.
Engineering Extension to Host Youth
Competition in Wind Energy
In 2019, the Kansas Energy Program within K-State Engineering is
hosting the ultimate wind energy learning experience, where teams of
students design, build and test their own wind turbines in a 48" x 48"
wind tunnel at a wind speed of approximately 3.5 m/s. There are two
divisions - 4-8 grade and 9-12 grade. Any student group is welcome to
participate, including, but not limited to public school, homeschool, 4-
H, after-school clubs, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts.
We are excited to announce details of the 2019 Kansas KidWind
Challenge. Please take a look at the details below and check out
additional information on our website at
www.kansasenergyprogram.org. We are expanding the Challenge to
include four regional and one statewide KidWind Challenge.

allow teams from across the state to better participate and provide more
time for preparation before the national KidWind Challenge.
We’ll be hosting an informational webinar on Mon, Jan. 7 at 3:45pm,
so please consider attending. The webinar will be recorded, even if you
can’t attend. We already have one recorded webinar from Dec. 13 on

We ask that you help in following through with your commitment to participate in this event..
Tips for Giving a Public Presentation:
1. Dress appropriately for the occasion so you feel at ease and look presentable. 2. Stand erect-on both feet. Good posture will help convince your audience that you
mean business. 3. Outline your talk, do not write it out word-for-word. Use your outline as you give your
talk, if you need it- but never read your talk! 4. Practice, Practice, Practice giving your talk. Give it to yourself alone at first in front of a
mirror. Later, have someone listen to you who will offer suggestions for improving it. The more you give it the more comfortable you will be.
5. Speak so people can hear and understand you easily. This will come with confidence and practice.
6. Speak slowly; talk at a natural speed but change occasionally for emphasis and better attention.
7. Watch pronunciation of words. Don’t use words you can’t pronounce or understand. 8. Use charts or visuals if they help you present the topic and add to your talk. Make sure
the letters on the poster are big enough to be read. 9. Be pleasant. A smile on your face will put a smile in your voice!
10. Be at ease. Be yourself. Be enthusiastic. 11. Have fun sharing the information with your audience! They want to hear what you have to say and are on your side and want to be supportive of your presentation.
