NEW! Story Time is now being offered in 5 branch locations, as well as the headquarters library in Hopewell.

Story time programs aim to instill a love of reading by encouraging parents and other special adults to read aloud to children. Activities in story time promote brain and language development for children from birth to age 5.

Winter Reading Program: Snuggle With a Book30 books in 30 days! February 3 to March 5, for children up to age 6.

ARLS challenges you to read 30 books to your child in 30 days! Beginning on February 3, visit our Winter Reading Program website at: http://www.arls.org/wrp to create an account using your library card number. Then, for the next 30 days, log each book you read to your child. You may log one at a time or all 30 at once. At the end of the program, you will be able to print a completion certificate, which will be your ticket to a special Story Time party at your local branch during the week of March 10 - 14. Children and caregivers are introduced to six early literacy skills essential for learning to read including print motivation, narrative skills, phonological awareness, vocabulary, letter knowledge, and print awareness.

Children gain confidence in reading by reading aloud to therapy dogs! Join clever canines handlers and therapy dogs for a fun way to practice reading skills! The program is for students in grades 2-4. Sign up for a 15 minute reading slot from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Registration Required.

Meet Hopewell native and published author Lamar Giles! His newest book is a thrilling young adult offering enti-tled Fake I.D. Mr. Giles will autograph copies of the book, which will be available for purchase. There will be a door prize and refreshments.

Red Cross Youth Leadership Meetings 1:00 p.m. at the Prince George Library on February 8

American Red Cross Youth Leadership/Preparedness meeting for teens 13-17. We will learn a leadership topic, discuss how to get involved as a Red Cross youth volunteer, as well as learn about steps to prepare yourselves and your community, in the event of an emergency or disaster.

Membership fees are $10 per year or $50 for a lifetime membership in the Friends of the Library, Dinwiddie. Basic membership fees for the Hopewell/PG Friends of the Library are $10 for an individual, $20 for a family, and $100 for a life membership.

The Board of the Friends of the Library, Dinwiddie, meets at the Dinwiddie Library at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of February, May (general meeting), August and November. The Board of the Hopewell/Prince George Friends of the Library meets on the first Thursday of January, March, June and September at 6:30 p.m. General membership meetings are usually scheduled in April and October.

The Hopewell/PG Friends sponsor “Poetry, Prose, and Pizza” at the Prince George Library on a quarterly basis. The next event is scheduled for January 30 at 6:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to bring original poetry or prose or a selection from a favorite poet. Nathan Richardson emcees this event in a family friendly atmosphere so come by, sign up to read, and enjoy a piece of pizza from co-sponsor, Luca Italian Restaurant, while discovering the talents of your neighbors.

The Hopewell/PG Friends will host a Library Lovers’ Reception on Friday, February 7, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hopewell Library. The event provides an opportunity for old friends and new friends to browse new offerings from the book store while enjoying refreshments and a chance to win some door prizes.

And don’t forget to visit The Reader’s Friend Book Store at the Hopewell Library to find gently used books, cds and dvds. The Book Store is open Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and friendly volunteers will help you find an amazing read. Proceeds from the bookstore and the ongoing sales at libraries like Dinwiddie, Rohoic, Carson, and McKenney help support programming for adults and children throughout the Appomattox Regional Library System.

The Hopewell Library welcomes Ms. Theresa G, a character performer as part of our celebrations for Black History Month.

She will be performing as Rosa Parks. Civil rights activist Rosa Parks’ refusal to surrender her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus spurred a city-wide boycott. Her lonely act of defiance began a movement that ended legal segregation in America, and made her an inspiration to free-dom-loving people everywhere. Come and enjoy an amazing enactment!

The Dinwiddie Library is proud to host Ms. Gigi Amateau, as part of our Black History celebrations for February

Ms. Amateau will be here to discuss her book, Come August, Come Freedom. This book envisions the life of the young rebel leader Gabriel, who led the slave revolution in Richmond in 1800. It is also the winner 2013 Library of Virginia People’s Choice Fiction Award. Come listen to an exciting account of this historic event!

The Hopewell/Prince George Friends and the Friends of the Library, Dinwiddie invite you to join them as “Fun and Friend Raisers” for your local libraries. Share your love of books and reading. Membership fees are $10 per year or $50 for a lifetime membership in the Friends of the Library, Dinwiddie. Basic membership fees for the Hopewell/PG Friends of the Library are $10 for an individual, $20 for a family, and $100 for a life membership.

The Board of the Friends of the Library, Dinwiddie, meets at the Dinwiddie Library at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of February, May (general meeting), August and November. The Board of the Hopewell/Prince George Friends of the Library meets on the first Thursday of January, March, June and September at 6:30 p.m. General membership meetings are usually scheduled in April and October.

The Hopewell/PG Friends sponsor “Poetry, Prose, and Pizza” at the Prince George Library on a quarterly basis. The next event is scheduled for January 30 at 6:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to bring original poetry or prose or a selection from a favorite poet. Nathan Richardson emcees this event in a family friendly atmosphere so come by, sign up to read, and enjoy a piece of pizza from co-sponsor, Luca Italian Restaurant, while discovering the talents of your neighbors.

The Hopewell/PG Friends will host a Library Lovers’ Reception on Friday, February 7, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hopewell Library. The event provides an opportunity for old friends and new friends to browse new offerings from the book store while enjoying refreshments and a chance to win some door prizes.

And don’t forget to visit The Reader’s Friend Book Store at the Hopewell Library to find gently used books, cds and dvds. The Book Store is open Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and friendly volunteers will help you find an amazing read. Proceeds from the bookstore and the ongoing sales at libraries like Dinwiddie, Rohoic, Carson, and McKenney help support programming for adults and children throughout the Appomattox Regional Library System.

The Hopewell Library welcomes Ms. Theresa G, a character performer as part of our celebrations for Black History Month.

She will be performing as Rosa Parks. Civil rights activist Rosa Parks’ refusal to surrender her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus spurred a city-wide boycott. Her lonely act of defiance began a movement that ended legal segregation in America, and made her an inspiration to free-dom-loving people everywhere. Come and enjoy an amazing enactment!

Ms. Amateau will be here to discuss her book, Come August, Come Freedom. This book envisions the life of the young rebel leader Gabriel, who led the slave revolution in Richmond in 1800. It is also the winner 2013 Library of Virginia People’s Choice Fiction Award. Come listen to an exciting account of this historic event!
