Animals and Nature Four in a Row

Use the overhead trasparency (CD#2) of the graphic below to have a challenging classroom gam e. Dividethe class in half, giving one side a stack of small square ma rkers, and the other ha lf a stack of small roundmarkers. Put the overhead on the projector and have each side send up a mem ber ( no repeats until everyone has a turn) to put a m arker on any o f the graphics that he/she can identify in Latin. If theidentification is correct, the marker is left on that graph ic. The other side then gets a turn. The challengeof the gam e is to ge t four like markers in a line (horizontally, vertcally, or diagonal). Therefore, strategy andLatin vocabulary knowledge are both demanded.

    Certamen Questions

Certamen (conte st) is a game played by Latin students in teams of three, four, or five. The

teache r askes a toss-up question, an d the students signal (raised h and/slap on desk) if they know the response. The first responder (as judged by the teacher) gets the first opportunity to answer. If the answer is correct, his/her team ge ts awarded 10 points and the opportunity to co llaborateon a bonus qu estion worth 5 points.

If the initial response to the answer is incorrect, a responder from another team may try for the 10points and subsequent bonus. (There are no negative penalties.) At the end of the questions, theteam with the highest score wins.

    JEOPARDY

Classroom jeopardy is a great way to have all students in a class participate in a review ofthe material. Begin by making enough copies of the Jeopardy sheets on the next pageso that each student may have a copy. Then, write the categories and amounts on thechalkboard.

NUMBERS MO TTOES FAM ILY HISTORY /CULTURE

    CLASSROOM / BUILDINGS

    500 500 500 500 500 500 500

Next, have students cou nt off by A, B, and C to determine the teams. Do not have theteams sit together. Any students who are left over from the count can become yourassistants who will keep the catego ry board and team totals current.

Hand out a Jeopa rdy sheet to each student. Tell the student s that since this is teamcompetition, the y should strive to an swer the most difficult que stions they can, thus savingeasier ones for their own teamm ates. They may not confer with each other at this time orduring play.

To begin play, have the first member of the A-team select any value question in any

catego ry. After you read the answer from the An swer Teacher Key aloud, the student isto ask the app ropriate que stion for th at answer. (e.g. NUMBERS for 100 would be Wha t isocto?)

If the response is correct, then the A-team gets the points and the selection is erased from the board.

If the response is incorrect,no points are added or subtracted, and the question remain s in play.

Whether the response from the first A-team me mber is correct or not, the next turn is for thefirst mem ber of the B-team. This student may select the same que stion (if it was answeredincorrectly) or a totally different question. Play continues aroun d the room in the A-B-C, first-second-third..., pattern until all categories are erased or until class time is over. Eachstudent should have an opportunity to play at least once. Although there is no penalty fora wrong answer, sometimes student s want to pass on their turns. This is acceptable. The

winning team is that one which has accu mulated the highest numb er of points at the endof the session.
