After the United Sates was formed a question arose: how would this new and free country

be run? After the war America was essentially split into two political parties, Federalists and

Republicans. Federalists advocated a strong central government and believed the general public

should have little involvement in the running of the country. Republicans on the other hand

decentralized government. They generally were wary of a potential corrupt government and

wanted and empowered people. It is arguable that the split of political views was part of the

reason that America, post-war, faced a lot of instability.

It can be argued that the American Revolution helped inspire another great revolution, the

French Revolution of the late 18th century. The United States was very supportive of the French

Revolution and helped the revolutionists overthrow their rulers and forge a republic. After the

revolution France went to war with England. This put America in a hard position because Britain

was a major trade partner. Eventually the conflicts presented by this would cause America and

France to almost go to war.

land was free it had to be filled with educated people to lead it. The number of book sellers in

Boston, NewYork, Philadelphia, and Charleston tripled and 266 new lending libraries were

opened. (Keene) With the growth of more widespread education people became more

knowledgeable about the political happenings in the country and political parties began to form.
