Message from the Dean

There have been times in our collective history when somber messages seem to bethe order of the day. I see messages everyday about the economy, the lack of apolitical will to do the right thing with health care reform, and the decimation ofsupport for higher education. Not so at WesternU. I am delighted to report thatall of the news coming from the College of Pharmacy is good news. AtWesternU, we are very fortunate because we work with visionary leaders who, according to President Pumerantz “refuse to participate in the recession.” As youlook through the pages of our newly formatted RxBound, you will see countlessexamples of growth and achievement.

Winter 2009/2010 marks the opening of 300,000 square feet of new educational, research and clinical space on our campus. The cover photo is the new PatientCare Center, which will house our campus pharmacy. This will give us theopportunity to highlight all that a clinic-based community pharmacy can be;providing exemplary service to our students, faculty, staff, Center patients, andthe community.

As we look forward to an exciting 2010, we are grateful for the many partnersand sponsors who have assisted us in meeting our strategic goals over the pastyear. We have seen an unprecedented increase in support for studentscholarships, support for diversity initiatives and support for facilities. If you are looking for a place to get good news, keep tuned to RxBound… weare “bound” for greatness.

Introducing the new magazine:RxBound

What’s in a Name?By Jacqueline Bradley

On October 16, Dean Robinson sent an e-mail to all of thestudents in the College of Pharmacy for help in re-naming theCollege’s newsletter. Alumni Newsletter just didn’t catch theessence of what our College is about. Also, the newsletterreaches out to a much larger audience than just alumni, including students, faculty, friends, and sponsors. Theresponse from the students was great — we received nearly70 names to choose from!

After much thought and discussion, the winner was chosen —Joanne Tuquero, Class of 2010, whose suggestion was WesternBound. She suggested “Bound” for all the students going toWesternU and all the alumni, staff, friends, and sponsors “tied”into WesternU. During discussion it was discovered that theword “bound” goes beyond this initial definition:

• Bound, as in progressing forward, which WesternU iscertainly doing

• Heading in a specific direction, and WesternU is certainlyupward bound

• A special meaning for our College: an atom is “bound”to another to form a molecule

There were so many definitions of “bound” that defined bothWesternU and our College of Pharmacy. We chose to put amore pharmaceutical spin on the name, resulting inthe new name for our magazine: RxBound.

Congratulations, Joanne, andthank you to all of thestudents who submitted names. There were some highly creativeand excellent names submitted. The choice was not an easy one!

The new WesternU Patient Care Center Pharmacy (PCCP)will do much more than fill prescriptions and providecounseling on medication therapy. It will address criticalconsumer needs through clinical pharmacy services andelectronic health records. Consumers also will benefit frompharmacy faculty experts who supervise training andlearning experiences of the student pharmacists.

Statistics demonstrate that there is a significant number ofour general population with chronic diseases. There are highrates of diabetes, childhood asthma and adult cardiovasculardisease. Pharmacists can help patients comply withmedication instructions, monitor patients’ diseases, andprovide information to both patients and their physicians.

The PCCP will offer patients a comprehensive portfolio ofservices designed to achieve the best in drug therapyoutcomes. Quality health care will be achieved throughcommunication and collaboration with the patients’ healthcare providers in order to fully understand patient needs andto provide the specific services they require. Specially trainedpharmacists are available to participate in travel medicine as

well as coordinated lipid, diabetes, hypertension, and asthmamanagement. Further, through continuous quality improve-ment, patients can be assured that medication safety, qualityservice and patient satisfaction are the highest priorities.

Rudolf Mireles, PharmD, will be the managing pharmacist incharge of the PCCP. Dr. Mireles has 23 years experience inpharmacy management and administration. He has beenfeatured on KABC-TV as a spokesperson for Eat HealthyCampaign and ABC of Summer Campaign. He hasparticipated in many community services. He is fluent inSpanish so as to benefit the Hispanic population in thesurrounding community. Dr. Mireles has been a mentor andeducator for many pharmacy students during hisprofessional career.

WesternU’s new Patient Care Center will add significantvalue to the Pomona Valley, because it will be the region’sonly academic health care facility. Every patient experiencewill involve a health professions student and an expertfaculty member who will insure the highest standards ofprofessional care.

On October 23rd, Dr. Steven M. Gray of Kaiser Permanentebecame the first Executive In Residence as part of a newprogram established by the College of Pharmacy. PresidentPumerantz made a special presentation of a plaquecommemorating Dr. Gray’s visit, which included meetingswith faculty and students and a panel discussion withDrs. Martinez, Shimomura, and Robinson. “Dr. Gray bringsa wealth of experience and wisdom in the areas of managedhealth care and health policy,” said Dean Robinson. Withover 150 student rotations being offered by Kaiser throughoutCalifornia, the relationship between WesternU and Kaiser isclearly important.

One of the great leaps forward for Kaiser has been theimplementation of electronic medical records. With over sixmillion members in California, this has been a tall order, butone that has become the model for others to try to replicate. In addition, pharmacy automation has allowed pharmacists tofocus more on clinical roles, according to Gray. He went on tooffer that pharmacists have a unique role to play indemonstrating the value of the integrated health care deliverymodel. Dr. Gray helped to craft the law for electronicprescriptions in California and he has been involved in theeffort to integrate technology that supports better patient careand drives down cost.

On the topic of healthcare reform during the panel discussion,Dr. Gray offered that “Kaiser is for universal healthcare.” He

encouraged attendees to visit www.kp.org to learn moreabout Kaiser’s complete integrated health care system.

He asked all students to evaluate what kind oforganization fits with their personal philosophyand encouraged them to make career choices

accordingly. Gray believes that pharmacists will play an evengreater role in patient care as we push the boundaries toimprove the use of medicines and expand the scope ofpharmacy practice in ways that improve outcomes ofmedication therapy.

About the Executive InResidence Program

The College of Pharmacy has established the ExecutiveIn Residence Program at Western University of HealthSciences to integrate senior executives into the life of theCollege and the University. Executives in residence willspend time on campus engaging our academiccommunity in topics such as legislative affairs, leadership, management and more.

Appointed by the dean, executives in residence bring anenergy and perspective to campus that give classroomstudies and research projects additional meaning.Students may establish and maintain connections withexecutives, which can translate into professionalopportunities, including summer internships.

Accessible to students, these leaders lecture and teachclasses, advise student-run clubs, participate in annualclub conferences and organize informal lunches forgroups of students with common interests, among manyother activities. While the College of Pharmacy hostsmany practitioners as visiting lecturers and conferenceparticipants each year, executives in residence have theopportunity to maintain long-term relationships withthe College.

The hallmark of the program is one-on-one counselingsessions in which executives advise students on theirprospective career choices. These meetings can takeplace at a student’s initiative and remain confidential.

Discussions typically focus on a student’s interests, background and experience as he or she considers acareer in pharmacy. Executives often advise students onthe following:

• Job-search and interview skills and strategies

• Skills and abilities required to succeed in aparticular industry or company

• Selecting courses and extracurricular activitiesthat can help prepare for various careers

• Planning a career path beyond the initial positionaccepted directly after graduation

• Strategies for maintaining momentum once acareer path has been chosen

• Dealing with challenging professional orpersonal issues

White Coat Ceremony: Class of 2013On August 8, 2009, Western University of Health Sciences,College of Pharmacy welcomed 120 students into the class of2013 at a White Coat Ceremony held at Bridges Hall of Musicin Claremont, California. Megan Nguyen, PharmD, AssociateProfessor of Pharmacy Practice and Administration, andCollege of Pharmacy charter class alumnae, gave the keynoteaddress to the students and their families. Below is a summaryof her speech in her own words:

“There were three main messages to the class: 1) Be a life longlearner. The day I put on my first white coat, I made acommitment to God and my patients to be a life-long learner. Irealize the importance of being humble about the knowledge Ihave and the knowledge that I have yet to learn. 2) Challengeyourselves. Sometimes you don’t know your potential untilsomeone challenges you beyond a limit you thought you could

achieve and then challenges you some more. 3) Communicate.Communicate to your patients with compassion. Don’tminimize the importance of your words because you say it sooften. Communicate to physicians and nurses withprofessionalism. Remember we are all on the same team.Today, when you put your white coat on, your journey as apharmacist begins and our journey together as a community ofpharmacists, community of health care professionals begins.”
