On behalf of the Board of Governors here at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and myself, I want to "xpress sincere gratitudil for your iilv~;)tmellL ill ;{PU'" l3io·Regional Agri-food System prvjeLt. This important project would not be possible without the vision and support of local government, and we are honoured by your commitment of$12,OOO over 3 years to support this work.
KPU is excited to embark on this ground-breaking research initiative, headed up by Dr. Kent Mullinix, which will have significant impact on the sustainability of southwest British Columbia's agri-food system, and also catalyze implementation of more sustainable bio-regional agri-foqd systems in other areas.
Due to the success and enthusiasm surrounding the project after only its first of three years, KPU has set up an independent, parallel institute - the Institute fur Sustainable Food Systems - through which Dr. Kent Mullinix will run the project This is an exciting development as we look forward to establishing KPU as a leader in this field.
This project will transform how we produce, purvey and consume our food resources, and foster more enlightened discourse for future planning. Your commitment demonstrates tremendous leadership, and KPU is grateful for the example being set by your government for other municipalities to follow.
We look forward to sharing the success of this initiative with you in the coming years. Once again, thank you for your investment and for your ongoing support.

Dear Lynne Axford:
The planning committee of the Alpha Secondary School Dry Grad, are pleased to inform you that the draw for the fund-raising raffle was held May 16, 2013. In recognition, we have placed an ad in the Burnaby Now as well as an acknowledgement on the Alpha website and Grad Facebook page.

1. THAT Council authorize a donation in the amount of $500.00 from the proceeds raised at the Deer Lake Save-On-Foods Fun Run to the Burnaby Taskforce on Homelessness.
REPORT
The Deer Lake Save-On-Foods 5 km Fun Run and Walk was held 2013 May 25 and organized by Recreation Division staff. The event was well received by the community and there were 14 community partners involved with the organization and sponsorship of the event. There were 175 participants of all ages that walked or ran around picturesque Deer Lake Park.
Typically with organized race events there is a charity selected by the organizing committee to receive a donation from the proceeds of the event and the charity is identified in the promotional material to encourage participation. This year the Burnaby Taskforce on Homelessness was selected by the organizing committee as the recipient of the donation and staff support this recommendation. The Burnaby Taskforce on Homelessness provided volunteer support with promoting the event, recruiting volunteers, event day logistics, and facilitating the collection of used runners for the homeless.
This report requests approval to award a donation in the amount of $500.00 from the proceeds of the Deer Lake Save-On-Foods Fun Run in support of the Burnaby Taskforce on Homelessness.

After the tragic killing of twenty young children and six adults in Newtown, Connecticut, many of us thought that the United States would finally get serious about gun control. While we all knew that the National Rifle Association (NRA) was powerful and would do everything in its power to block even the most sensible changes, we hoped that at last politicians would press forward with common sense measures like background checks given the extraordinary support for stronger gun control among the American people.
Sadly, we were disappointed once again. While American politicians may be willing to 'protect' children by banning the import of Kinder Surprise chocolates as a choking hazard, the money and threats of the gun lobby prevailed once again to stop them from passing new gun laws.
The NRA has also worked globally to block efforts to fight gun smuggling and modest improvements to gun laws in other nations. Even here, in Canada, we have witnessed its power. Many times over the last twenty years, NRA presidents have travelled to Canada to denounce our gun laws and help the Canadian gun lobby fundraise. Charlton Heston even famously declared that strong gun control would threaten Canadians' "rights to bear arms," a right that does not exist. .
In an article published in the current issue of Americas Quarterly (www.americasquarterly.org), I detailed my experience with NRA attempts to block gun control in Canada and Brazil, in spite of their charter supposedly limiting their actions to the u.s. It is documented that a significant portion of the group's revenue comes directly from the firearms industry, providing them with the resources to have a strong voice in both domestic and international firearms debates. For example, the NRA spent more than $243 million in 2010 80 times more than the largest pro-gun control group in the U.S.
The NRA's influence on the Canadian gun lobby is undeniable. For example, Canada's National Firearms Association (NFA)'s Executive Vice-President echoed NRA Executive Vice-President Wayne Lapierre's call for more armed guards in schools, even adding daycares to the mix, when speaking recently to journalists at the NFA Annual General Meeting.
We are writing to you today because we know that like us, you are concerned about the increasing influence of the gun lobby. By sending a generous gift of $50, $100 or even $250, you can help ensure that we have the resources needed to keep NRA-type policies out of Canada.
Gun lobby members handpicked by the government to advise on firearm policies don't hide their connections to the N RA. Tony Bernardo, Executive Director of the Canadian Shooting Sports Association (CSSA)/Canadian Institute for Legislative Action (CILA) has bragged about their NRA support. CSSA/CILA

has two official representatives on Public Safety Minister Toews's Firearms Advisory Committee. And last year, the CSSA President was the sole civil society representative on Canada's official delegations at the UN Arms Trade Treaty's negotiations and at the UN Transnational Organized Crime Conference.
The gun lobby has been emboldened by the U.S. successes and Canada's rollback of gun laws over the past year, and speaks openly of the next steps to dismantle Canadian gun control. Following the U.S_ 'victory', the CSSA stated "Canadians who feels morally superior to our American cousins fail to see that U.S. legislators are simply more astute than ours were on the firearms file. Canada was saddled with legislation in 1995 that pretended to keep us safe and it was a very costly mistake."
Canadians pay a heavy price from our southern neighbour's lack of controls. A large number of the handguns used in crime in Canada were purchased in American states with loose gun laws and trafficked north. Toronto and Calgary police estimate that these guns account for 70% of handguns recovered from crime scenes in their jurisdictions.
But the federal government appears to put little effort into fighting this scourge and border seizures of illegal guns have actually decreased. Further, last year saw the creation of many loopholes in Canada that together, police warn will make illicit trafficking easier to do and harder to prosecute. Organized crime, terrorists and criminals take the easiest route to obtain guns, and it's only a matter of time before these weaknesses are exploited.
While crimes with handguns and handgun homicides remain steady, border services seized just 460 firearms in 2009 less than half of what was seized five years earlier. And most of those guns were not intended for crime but rather belonged to American visitors wanting to bring their personal guns with them when crossing the border. In fact, the Toronto Star reported that in 2009, border services in Ontario seized ~ they believed were headed for the criminal market. That year, Toronto police seized 861 crime guns in the city, at least 70% of which were smuggled in from the U.S.
The failed u.s. proposals were simple, and pale in comparison to the controls found in almost any other industrialized country - background checks on gun buyers, a ban on some military assault rifles, and a crackdown on illegal gun trafficking. But they would have been a very small step towards stopping the U.S. epidemic of unchecked proliferation of firearms that kills over 30,000 Americans every year . .\tlu lesson in what happens when politicians are in thrall to the gun lobby, a lesson that Canada should take to heart.
Canada's new Liberal leader needs to be prepared to stand up to them. Please take a moment to sign and send the enclosed Urgent Action Card to let him know the gun lobby does not speak for you. And at the same time, please send as generous a donation as you can - $50, $100, $250, or even $500~_-__ ., so that we can continue fighting to ke.eg.NRA·type policies out of Canada. Re: Request for Financial Assistance: 2013 Canadian Lacrosse National Championships-Team BC Box Lacrosse - Midget
Dear Ms. Skipsey:
The BC Lacrosse Association is in preparation for the 2013 Canadian Lacrosse National Championships for nine Team BC programs traveling to various cities across Canada.
There are three athletes who live in Burnaby and made the 2013 Team BC - Midget TeamJordan Gabriele, Trevor Peters and Cory Sinclair. They will be traveling to Whitby, Ontario for ten days from August 2-11,2013.
While the BC Lacrosse Association does offset a small amount of the expenses and teams do fundraise, most of the burden of financial responsibility of the expenses (Le., equipment, airfare, accommodations, meals, h'I'Ound transportation, etc.) fall onto the parents whose children are participating in these programs. This year, we anticipate the direct cost per player to be approximately $2,000.00-$2,200.00 per player.
It would be greatly appreciated if you would consider providing a grant to each ofthese athletes who will be representing Burnaby and the Province of BC in August.
If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me at (604) 421-9755 Ext. 4.
Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Re: Request for Financial Assistance Sports Grant / National Sports Tournament
Please accept this letter as our request to be considered for the Financial Assistance Sports Grant on behalf of our son Jordan Gabriele. Jordan is 16 years old and he has played and continues to be involved in sports programs with local Burnaby Associations.
Earlier this year, Jordan attended the Team Vancouver tryouts for Midget Lacrosse as part of the process to try and make Team BC. The Team Vancouver tryouts cover the follOWing associations: Burnaby, Delta, New Westminster North Shore, Port Moody, Richmond and Vancouver. Jordan was one of four Burnaby Midget players to earn one of the 16 spots on Team Vancouver.
Team Vancouver participated in the BC Cup in Ladner and Delta, which is an inter-provincial tournament. The other teams participating were Team Fraser Valley and Team Island. After several skill competitions and mini games over a three day period, Team Vancouver won the BC Cup.
The weekend of the BC Cup also served as the final tryout to make Team Be. After participating in the tournament, over half of the participants are released. Then a final game is played between the remaining 34 players (a cross-section of all three teams) and the final team is selected from this group. As a member of Team BC, each player then has the privilege of travelling to the Nationals, held annually in Whitby, Ontario (August 2nd - August 10th), to represent their province, city and association. Out of approximately 60 players attending the BC Cup, Jordan was one of only three Burnaby Midget players to earn one of the 21 spots on Team Be.
It has come to our attention that the City of Burnaby has a Grant available tq provide some financial assistance to help cover some of the travel costs to Nationals, which will be approximately $2000-$2200. As such, again please accept this as our request to be considered for the Financial Assistance Sports Grant.

Burnaby City Council Executive Committee 4949 Canada Way Burnaby, BC V5g 1M2
Dear: Burnaby City Council Executive Committee:
Re: Funding for Stand Up For Mental Health Comedy Society's 2013 Graduation Gala.
The SMH Comedy Society is a program that was founded in 2004 by award-winning counselor and standup comic David Granirer to teach comedy to people with mental illness as a way of building confidence and fighting public stigma.
We are all too painfully aware that mental health issues can affect people from all walks of life whether they are Chief Executive Officers, Professional Athletes, Doctors, Lawyers or members of your family. Our program helps people overcome the stigma and challenges of living mental illness.
Our program is incredibly cost-effective because each dollar spent serves a dual purpose: Recovery for the comics and raising awareness of mental health issues within the general public. Each year the program enrolls 12-15 individuals with a mental illness. These individuals learn how to develop and perform their own Stand-Up Comedy routine. The cost of the class is based on a sliding scale and no one is ever turned away due to lack of funds.
Many people who take this course are on disability, so they are not charged anything for the course. The program involves three hours per week of class time and individual coaching with David Granirer for approximately 48 weeks. During instructional time students learn how to write and perform a comedy set. Students learn the importance of being on time, and focusing on and preparing their comedy sets. They also learn how to work with others in a very safe environment. We are happy to report that after taking this course some of our students have had the confidence to enter or re-enter the workforce.
Within the first four months of class the students perform at their Debut Show at a comedy club or theatre. This year students performed their show at Lafflines Comedy Club in New Westminster on May 26, 2013. This year's show featured the 2013 class as well as a number of the Stand Up For Mental Health Comedy Society's Alumni.

My name is Yinan Max Wang. Please allow me to express my gratitude for taking time on my letter. As a young Burnaby based photographer, I am writing to introduce a very special

With intention to present an outlook of life in our country, ARIA CANADA is a project involving
the creation of photographic portraits and video interviews of 100 Canadians, each born in a

In addition to the 100 portraits, the participants were video-interviewed, being asked to respond to
the same set of questions, which were carefully framed to reveal their dreams and aspirations,
important turning points in their lives and their own concepts of success and happiness. While the
photographs showed the essence of each person at a particular moment frozen in time, the
interviews genuinely revealed their life values and their understanding of the meaning of
existence.
When ARIA CANADA was completed I realized that it was not just simply about the 100
individuals but about a century of the life of Canada itself and the gradual evolution of our nation,
as it has become today, indeed a very special place in the world.
With the above comments in mind, I want to propose to create a very special photography book
for ARIA CANADA; an accompanying tie-in documentary DVD of selected interviews will also
35
be included. The book would be placed in all public and school libraries in Canada both for its
usefulness as resource material and its message of inspiration.
With a heart full of gratitude and respect, I am writing to seek any possibilities for assistance in
publishing ARIA CANADA Project into a book form. A resume of my professional career plus a
video format DVD of sample photos and interviews of ARIA CANADA are attached. The
website for this project is at http://www.yinanmaxwang.com/a;ia/canada.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to learning of your interest.
Sincerely yours,

Animal Health Clinic

On Sunday, August 18 we held our summer Animal Health Clinic at Raincity Housing's Triage
Emergency Shelter: From 1 Dam to 6pm, Dr. Shawn Llewellyn and a team of volunteer animal health
technicians and veterinary assistants provided free examinations, vaccinations and flea and/or de
worming treatments to 15 dogs 12 cats and 1 rat. It was such an amazing day and we were so happy
to be able to provide support to animals who are loved so much by their people. The clinics are an
important part of the work we do and provide a valuable service to the community. Our goal is to raise
enough money to allow us to hold four clinics a year. With no public funding to support this work, we
rely solely on your donations.
