COURSE OVERVIEWThis 36-hour

workshop addresses the sport business

industry’s increasing demand for

employees and athletes with strong

leadership skil ls.

The blended format includes 18 hours of classroom learning taught by faculty at Stenden University of Applied Sciences – Qatar and 18 hours via distance delivery by faculty from the University of South Carolina’s Department of Sport and Entertainment Management.

The workshop is designed to develop and enhance valuable management competencies for sport industry professionals. The courses will cover topics such as development and implementation of policies, building organizational structure, designing entrepreneurial strategies, exploring marketing techniques and applying effective financial management. Participants will have an opportunity to apply their learning directly into the workplace through case studies and scenarios based on real sports business problems and the possible solutions.

Campus Experience and GraduationAfter completing the 36 hours of coursework, participants will have the opportunity to travel to the United States for a special graduation ceremony at the University of South Carolina. The weeklong trip will include a tour of the campus, a golf club visit, tours of sport facilities and the graduation ceremony.

How Will You Benefit?

Participants should have a minimum of two years industry experience at a senior managerial level in the field of sports. The course is particularly of use for participants from professional and amateur sports organizations (e.g. Olympic committees), private sports clubs, other commercialized sports establishments (e.g., bowling alleys, ski resorts, and public golf courses), sports arenas, coliseums, civic centers and stadia.

Upon successful completion of the course participants will receive a certificate validated by both Stenden University of Applied Sciences - Qatar and University of South Carolina. In addition, participants will have gained the knowledge and training to:

• Describe and demonstrate the skills necessary for the management of a sports organization.

• Apply the concepts of planning, organizing, leading, and evaluating to a variety of sports organizations.

• Demonstrate the concepts of strategic planning and resource allocation in sports organizations

• Demonstrate effective knowledge of leadership theory and application in sports organizations.

• Describe the trends in the sports industry at national and international levels.

• Analyze training policies based on organization needs and evaluate approaches to training.

• Identify how financial statements are used in business decision making.

Shiban Khan, Ph.D.

Dr. Shiban Khan is a strategic management expert with a strong background in corporate social responsibility, international business and multicultural management. She has provided strategic management consulting and training to organizations in Asia and Europe, from grassroots to multinationals. She is a director of Arminius Strategy Consultants where she leads a number of projects for sports management, international telecom, real estate, and trading firms. She is also an executive coach who supports her clients in developing and honing their leadership skills for sustained success. Shiban has lived and worked in Germany, Switzerland, UK and USA before moving to Qatar. She received her Doctorate in Management from the University of St.Gallen, Switzerland. She also holds a Master in Environmental Policy from the University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Khalid Ballouli, Ph.D. – Associate Professor

Khalid Ballouli joined USC’s Department of Sport and Entertainment Management in 2011 after earning his Ph.D. in sport management from Texas A&M University. Ballouli’s research focuses on sport marketing and sport consumer behavior, with a distinct focus on the ubiquitous nature of music in contemporary sport. Ballouli research is published in leading peer-reviewed journals, such as Journal of Sport Management, Sport Management Review, and Sport Marketing Quarterly, and has been presented at several academic conferences for North American Society for Sport Management, European Association of Sport Management, and Sport Marketing Association. He received the Outstanding Service Award from the Sport Marketing Association after serving two terms as vice president of academic affairs, and currently serves on the editorial boards for Sport Marketing Quarterly and Sport and Entertainment Review. Ballouli spent six years as a professional baseball player, during which time he gained first-hand knowledge of the professional sports industry. He remains active in his community by helping youth baseball organizations foster athlete and community development, and often lends his time and expertise to researchers and educators in this field.

Olga Kampaxi, Ph.D.

is an experienced HR professional and holds a Ph.D. in psychology from Bristol University, UK. She is also a certified HR professional by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), UK. In addition to the above, Kampaxi holds a postgraduate certificate in adult education. She has a hands-on approach in education and HR operations and has worked for Rotana Hotels as the area director of human resources – UAE. Prior to that, Kampaxi spent three years with Jumeirah Group at The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management and worked for a short period with Dubailand as senior talent manager. She has also been in Switzerland for five years educating and managing young hoteliers during their postgraduate studies. In her most recent HR role, she was the HR director for InterContinental Doha – The City. Now she is freelancing for IWD, a market research company. Kampaxi has also facilitated two re-engineering projects, worked for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games as a regional staffing manager, and served as a consultant with companies such as Siemens, Motor Oil, Swissport Hellas, Médecins sans Frontiers and others.

Nick Watanabe, Ph.D. – Assistant Professor

Nicholas Masafumi Watanabe is an assistant professor in the Department of Sport and Entertainment Management and the University of South Carolina. He earned his Master of Science in leisure studies and his Ph.D. in recreation, sport and tourism from the University of Illinois. Prior to coming to South Carolina, Watanabe served as assistant professor from 2016-2017 at the University of Mississippi and assistant teaching professor from 2010-2016 at the University of Missouri. His research focuses include sport economics, big data analytics, sport finance and international sport and he has lectured at Beijing Sport University, where he taught a course comparing and contrasting the business practices of North American sport organizations with those in China.

Eddy Tukamushaba, Ph.D. – Associate Professor

Eddy K. Tukamushaba is an associate professor at Stenden Qatar University of Applied Sciences, in the Department of International Hospitality Management. He holds a Ph.D. in hotel and tourism management from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong. Tukamushaba has a good number of publications in peer reviewed journals, book chapters, and several conference papers. Some of his publications are in: International Journal of Market Research, Journal of International Entrepreneurship, Journal of China Tourism Research, International Journal of Business and Management Studies, International Journal of Tourism Sciences, International Journal of Hospitality and Events Management, Journal of Tourism, Journal of Teaching in Travel and Tourism, Encyclopedia of Tourism, and Journal of Managerial Psychology. During his career he has consulted a large number of companies and educational organizations. His research interests lie within the fields of consumer behavior and marketing communications. His current research focuses on customer relationship management in sports, and emergent technological trends in sports sponsorship.

Mark Nagel, Ph.D. - Professor

A native of California, Mark Nagel became a faculty member in the Department of Sport and Entertainment Management at the University of South Carolina in 2006. Prior to joining the department, he was the director of the graduate sport management program at Georgia State University. At Georgia State he was responsible for all aspects of the sport management program including recruiting and advising students, developing and scheduling courses, identifying and supervising adjunct faculty, and maintaining alumni and sport business relationships. Nagel also previously worked as a sport management professor at the University of West Georgia and San Jose State University. He currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at the IE Business School in Madrid, the University of San Francisco and St. Mary’s College of California. Before pursuing a career in academe, Nagel worked in different areas of sport management—primarily in athletic coaching and administration as well as campus recreation. He has co-authored six textbooks including multiple editions of: Introduction to Sport Management: Theory and Practice; Financial Management in the Sport Industry; and Sport Facility Management: Organizing Events and Mitigating Risks.
