Dear Friends in Christ,
The most important thing we can ever give the next generation is our Catholic faith. Handing on the faith is a process called catechesis. It involves the intellect, the will, the character, personality and memory, to form a
human person in the light of divine revelation. Catechesis is imparted to us first of all in the sacred liturgy:
meditating on the Word of God proclaimed to us at Mass and living the sacraments by which we participate
in the divine life. But catechesis also requires formal instruction, as well as those informal ways we learn the
faith in the domestic church.
Catholics of a certain age will remember learning the faith through the question and answer format of The
Baltimore Catechism. After Vatican II, desire for experimentation and novelty meant the abandonment of
those texts. With the doctrinal and cultural confusion of the post-conciliar period, Catholics of that genera-
tion grew up with little in terms of real catechesis. The results of what is now referred to as “the lost gen-
eration” of catechesis have been disastrous. Catholic faith and practice have been on a precipitous decline
wherever the faith was not integrally taught. Into the mix, Ignatius Press developed a religious education se-
ries called Faith and Life, which many parishes who wanted an alternative to the status quo. The series has
served us and many other places well. But I have always found it wanting in biblical and liturgical literacy,
spiritual and cultural depth; its format is dry and its pedagogy not very exciting.
For several years our team at Prince of Peace has been exploring other options. And the result of that in-
tense process of research has been the decision to adopt a new program from Sophia Institute Press, for a
significant portion of our religious education curriculum in school and RE. Please visit the website
https://sophiainstituteforteachers.org to learn more. The program is very good, and the materials for teach-
ers excellent. There are also options we are exploring for more parent involvement in the religious forma-
tion of their children, and you will be learning about that next year. Since parents are the primary educators
of their children, and they are the ones who promise at baptism to raise their children in the faith, the parish
through its school and RE religion programs can give greater support to that beautiful task by greater parental
involvement.
I am very excited about this new initiative to form our students in the Catholic faith. As school approaches
after the summer break, we will have some information sessions for families to learn more. Please feel free
to make an appointment with Angela Calabro, our Director of Catechesis and Evangelization, or Maria
Barontini, our Pastoral Associate for Children’s Catechesis. They will be able to answer all your questions and help you understand better this exciting new program!

Lady and the Holy Spirit formed the God-Man Jesus
Christ, and they also wish to form you so that you
can say, "It is no longer I who live, it is Christ who lives in me."

Introduction to our Fraternus Chapter!
Fraternus is a brotherhood of disciples whose focus is to mentor boys into virtu-ous men. The program is geared towards boys from 6th to 12th grade. Any Catho-lic man from college-age all the way to great-grandparent is invited to participate as a mentor. Prince of Peace is excited to launch a chapter in Fall 2018 under the leadership of Thomas Connelly & Paul Pizzuti. In preparation, interested men are invited to an information meeting in the PAC on 9 May from 7-8.30p. The objective of this meeting is to introduce Fraternus, explain the mission and spirit behind it, and to give introductory training into what it means to be a mentor. This will be a great opportunity for any man who wants to improve his ability to mentor his sons or other young people and to get to know Fraternus. Note: This is a training/informational meeting for the men only, the program and meetings for boys will officially launch in the fall.
