POLOKONG. - Sedibeng District Munici-pality (SDM) Mayor Councillor Simon‘Sy’ Mofokeng pleads with the communi-ty to let the family and relatives of six-year-old Sibusiso Ndaba find closure.Sibusiso was in the company of his
grandmother when he fell into a slightlyopen manhole near the Golden Highway. The incident happened last Thursday ataround 11:00. Speaking during his visit tothe family of the deceased, Mofokeng saidit was very unfortunate that this involveda government manhole, “It’s an accidentthat could have happened to anyone at anytime.”Mofokeng was accompanied byWard councillor Attie Moleko, SedibengMMC for Strategic Planning and Econom-ic Development Maipato Tsokolibane andHealth and Social Development MMCMelina Gomba. It took Fire and Rescuehours to locate the boy. After talking to the family, Mofokeng
appealed to the community not to politi-cise the incident. He said Emfuleni andSedibeng municipalities will help with theburial costs. Kingsol Chabalala, DA con-stituency Emfuleni, said EMS had ignoreda plea for help from the community to res-cue the victim. It has been alleged thatthe boy was walking behind his grand-mother after they jumped the road towardsPolokong. A vendor told Sedibeng Sterthat after the boy fell into the manhole, there was a rush to rescue him, but it wastoo little too late.“No-one could get inside the dangerous
manhole. It was awful listening to thevoice of the boy, calling his mother forhelp. Only a few seconds later, the voicewas gone.” Community members saidthey had informedMetsi-a-Lekoaworkers
about the danger of the open manhole. Laterin the evening, the community went berserk. They relieved their frustration by barricad-ing the road with tyres. Police were calledto control the volatile situation. The commu-nity blamed Fire and Rescue, the Waterwingand Police for failing to search for the body. The body was found the following daytrapped at the Sebokeng Water Care Works.
The body was found by contractors whocame to assist the following day. The steal-ing of manhole covers by the communityshould not be dismissed. Sebokeng WaterCare Works has high pressure with over 120mega litres per day. It is one of the biggestplants in Gauteng. The sewerage runs ongravity with big pipes that accommodate thewhole network. A funeral will be conducted
from the deceased’s home on Saturday inPolokong.*The stealing of manhole covers to
sell for money played a major role inthis tragic death. The municipality isnow using asbestos instead of metal totry and stop this. But now residents fearthere is a chance that the asbestos willalso be stolen to use as heaters.

VEREENIGING. - The Vereeniging Ban-quet Hall was packed with men and womenin blue on Thursday morning when the VaalRand Flying Squad held a prayer day thathosted the likes of Evangelist Ananias Ra-lekholela, Bishop Isaac Mthimkhulu andPastor Piet “London” Nteleki. The prayer day was embraced by many
from the defence force, Fire, and Vaal RandPolice.Nteleki asked the house to embrace itself
for the good job they are doing, knowing thatthey are the first defence in the country. “Weneed to trust God with our jobs because hehas given it to us.No matter how hard it is, no matter how
stressful and tempting your work, you arenot fighting the criminals in flesh. It’s a spiri-tual matter, take it to the office,” says Ntele-ki.Meanwhile former Sebokeng Police stati-
on Commander Michael Motlhala was alsogiven an opportunity to speak to former col-leagues. He told the house that he has beenthrough thick and thin and God was withhim. “I am where I am through God whotook me from glory to glory,” says Motlhala.Ralekholela spoke like a father to chil-
dren, quoting numerous verses from the Bi-ble. “The devil is a liar. You are whereyou are because God wanted you to be here.God says he will never leave us nor forsakeus,” Ralekholela concluded.

BOPHELONG. - An alarming increasein the number of trucks hijacked whiletransporting cigarettes in the area is re-ported.Now Police aim to send hijackers
packing by beefing up security. Alltrucks are escorted from shop to shopby the South African Police Service.Police spokesperson Sergeant Ger-
trude Makhale said it’s a station instruc-tion that all cigarette transit vehicles beescorted. Police have received com-plaints about increased hijackings butsome people feel this is a false alarm.Vereeniging Police reported recently
that a truck was hijacked. It was reportedthat the truck carried Chicago cigarettes. It was later recovered in Meyerton. Ma-khale said the escorts will go on until
the private companies hire their own pri-vate security guards. She reacted after aphoto was brought to the attention ofSedibeng Ster. The community is wor-ried that no police vehicles will be avail-able when a serious incident takes placein the township and say that private com-panies have money to beef up their ownsecurity. One Sedibeng Ster reader said that,
since last year, they have spotted thesame police mini-bus escorting a vehicletransporting cigarettes. This has raised serious concerns that
the same vehicle is always escorted byWarrant Officer Rakimane, sector man-ager in Bophelong.Makhale said there was nothingwrong
with this as Rakimane has been taskedto escort the transit.

POLOKONG. - An attempt by a tenant toevict her landlord turned ugly when agroup of community members attackedthe tenant with weapons. It was alleged that the person wanted
to evict Aleta Tumane. The community could not understand
how a former tenant is in possession ofthe title deed as most residents living innew RDP houses do not have the titledeeds. This title deed is in the name of former
tenant Joyce Malefu Mofokeng. It is alleged that she bought the house
fraudulently from a person known as Selinawho has since passed away, through assist-ance of the Legal Aid Department in Vereen-iging. The late Selina is said to have toworked as a ward committee member duringthe time of former ANC ward CouncillorCaptain Ntlele.During the eviction Police arrived, but an-
gry community members threatened to takeaction if Mofokeng ever decided to comeback to the house. Both the police and sheriff managed to
break the lock of the door and remove itemsfrom the house. The angry community, ward committee
and Ward Councillor Attie Moleko, returnedall items removed and put them back into thehouse.Moleko advised the family to appeal to the
Sebokeng Magistrates Court for help.He said he is surprised at how the titles
to the new houses had been issued.“I suspect it might be a deed search, not
a search for a title deed,” he said. The ex-boyfriend of Mofokeng confirmed
that there has been corruption in the wholesaga.“We were never in possession of the title
deeds. We’ve been renting from Tumane,”he says.

The deaths of two young childrenfrom Sebokeng in the last weekshould never be allowed to happenagain. One child was allegedly rapedand murdered and thrown at a dumpin Zone 3 while another fell into asewerage manhole near Polokong. An immeasurable loss has been sus-
tained by both families and a gaping voidhas been left by their departure.
As responsible human beings we mustwork jointly in taking action in protectingour children. The protection of children can-not be the single responsibility of govern-ment. Before pointing a finger at govern-ment as some have been doing, parents mustplay their part and instil discipline and goodmorals within their children, starting froma young age. One other important factor isthat all members of our communities, inclu-
ding traditional healers, faith-based organi-sations, parents, educators and leaders fromvarious sectors must play their part. Childrencan also be protected if we build nationalawareness from within our own structures.Let us continually report cases of child abu-se, neglect and exploitation to social workersand law enforcement authorities. The NGOscan play an important role through dissemi-nation of information to potential victims ofabuse and neglect. There is no way to remo-ve the painof the loss of the children. The loss
is real. The only sanity is to know,to believe, in a life beyond, when allthe scales are balanced and the suf-fering is over. We trust that whilethis childrens lives on earth are done, their lives beyond have just begun. With that knowledge we can releasethem and let them go into His arms, then by faith receive in return theboundless comfort of His presence. That is all, that is enough.

children with substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, bullying and gangsterism. “We are pleased thatthings went well for us this year and believe thatthrough working together with pupils, teachers andparents, 2015 will also be a successful year,” saysa delighted Bosui.

SEBOKENG. - Career developing practitio-ners Palesa Nakedi and Thokozile Masolo sayit is very important for learners to choose theirsubjects wisely while still in the early grades. The importance of this emerged over the
weekend when the two, with the help of a feweducators, held a career day for Grade 9 lear-ners at the Thuto Tiro Comprehensive Schoolin Zone 10. Masolo says, “We were deployedto this school by theGautengRegion CityAca-demy (GRCA) as career developing practitio-ners. Basically what we are here to do is helplearners with regards to subject-choices andhelp them choose career paths that are in linewith their passions and strong points.”Masolo adds that it gets difficult when they
do not get enough support from educators and
parents. “We were very disappointed to noticethat some of the parents did not encourage theirkids to attend the career day. We were expec-ting over 200 Grade 9 learners but only about50 turned up at the event.”Learnerswere asked to dress up for the diffe-
rent careers they will one day venture into andprofessionals from different fieldswere invitedto give more insight into their jobs and whatit is they do on a daily basis. “Todaywas entire-ly about subject choice. Grade 9 is a very cruci-al level and this is where learners make thechoices that will determine their futures,” saysNakedi. Both said they hoped that the studentswalked away knowing what it is they want inlife. “I hope they are motivated to reach fortheir dreams and grab their futures with bothhands,” Nakedi concluded.

SEBOKENG. - Sibusiso Mthembu’s way ofgiving back to the community is one that canput a smile on anyone’s face. Mthembu co-owns theStarRevolutionAcademyofDancewith Mega Matloha. The academy teachesabout 60 youngsters from Sebokeng diffe-rent types of dance for free. Mthembu says,“I really have a passion for dance and I feelit is something that can bring a lot of positivi-ty into the community. What I am trying todo is move kids away from negative thingssuch as drugs and teenage pregnancy. Dancekeeps them busy.”

partnership with local businesses so that theyoung kids can benefit from this. If I havethe community on my side, we can easily getthe things we need for the academy withouthaving to pay for them, as that would be ex-pensive,” adds Mthembu.

ORANGE FARM. - Afrika Tikkun’sEmpowerment Programme for childrenwith disabilities recently addressed bar-riers to accessing justice for childrenwith disabilities in Orange Farm.
This was when Afrika Tikkun’s Are-kopaneng Community Centre in OrangeFarm hosted the Kopano KematlaSports day for all.
Jean Elphick who heads the pro-gramme says, “The event, which is or-ganised largely by mothers of childrenwith disabilities, is a fun and inclusivesports day for children within the com-munity.”
“The idea is aimed at promotingequality and breaking down prejudices.More than half the children with disabi-lities in Orange Farm stay at home in-stead of attending a pre-school or
school. They never get the opportunity toplay sports, let alone compete on an evenfooting with their non-disabled peers. Themothers saw this day as an opportunity fortheir kids to participate in something funand exciting,” Elphick adds.
Elphick states that the greatest achieve-ment of this event lies in the impact it hadon the able-bodied children who attended.
“They interacted and competed againstchildren with disabilities, smashing mind-sets and growing friendships,” Elphickconcludes.
Events included wheelchair races andsitting volleyball games.

Sasol, through our community development project, Ikusasa, recently made a substantial contribution to effective manage-ment of the Sasolburg municipal landfill site.
A security fence was erected along the access road to thedump site to curb illegal dumping that has often taken placealong this road.
This reinforced ClearVu fence is 2,4 m high, has anti-climbcastle spikes and ripper smart coils at the top, with an anti-burrowing system below the ground. According to the projectmanager, Elmarie Botha, a trial section was installed andmonitored for three months before the whole area wasfenced to establish durability against vandalism and theft.
“During the trial the fence withstood severe conditions suchas various attempts of destruction, cutting and fire,” saysBotha.
In addition, Sasol contributed a CAT landfill compactor tomaintain the waste stockpile and keep the entrance to thedump clear. The CAT 816F2 spreads the waste evenly before ituses its full weight of 23 770 kg to compact waste as it drivesover.
According to Sydney Lempe, Director Social Service at theMetsimaholo Local Municipality, they are most thankful forthese initiatives that will vastly improve the municipality’scapacity to manage the landfill site more effectively.

WEARE
One way or the other we must grow asa region - as a region is a macrocosm ofthe nation. We cannot repeat the samemistakes when it comes to our football le-adership.
The reason we ended up electing thewrong people to lead our football is thatwe were too myopic (short-sighted).
This was one of my warnings to somedevelopment coaches over the weekend -to be careful who they elect to run foot-ball. How can you select a person who
has never been involved in football to runour football?
The success of the PSL is based on thefact that those board members are club ow-ners and make sure the interests of footballcomes first. But in this region, we take peo-ple from shebeens and taverns to run ourfootball.Shooting From The Hip’s advice to the te-
ams is that – when you choose leadership, think hard before bringing in somebody whocares nothing about the development of foot-ball to run this beautiful game.
There must be order in our football withnot everyone simply doing as they wish be-cause this is the biggest challenge in our
football – lack of accountability. For examp-le, Shooting From TheHip is aware that therewas a meeting of the Emfuleni Local Foot-ball Association onMonday, but some teamswere never invited.
There is much confusion in this region andeven the teams are confused about the lea-gue.
As Shooting From The Hip said last week, football administrators and development co-aches are divided in this region.
The follow-up question would be: Whywere other teams not invited to the meetingif it was an association meeting?
This is no longer about football develop-ment, but some people try to hide themselves
behind our beautiful game. They pretend to be concerned about the
development of football but the fact of thematter is that they are only interested inglutting their egos.
Whatever is happening in this region atthe moment has nothing to do with the de-velopment of football. It is all about a po-wer-struggle, to say the least.
Ladies and gentlemen, please let us re-frain from using the word ‘development’to achieve our personal objectives. Evenif some of you leave football, this beauti-ful game would still be on the go for atleast the next century. No one owns thisbeautiful game!
No-one owns FOOTBALL!

BOPHELONG. - A sports development coun-cil exists but there’s no equipment.
“It’s a disgrace to lose young talent that, ofcourse, ends up leaving the the region forgreener pastures,” said Doctor Modise, sportsdevelopment officer.
Speaking during the media briefing at theBophelong Hub office at the stadium, Modiseadded that theEmfuleni Local FootballAssoci-ation unearthed the talent of young players butthere was no follow-up.
He said the municipality sports councilknows the predica-ment they face:
“We have sincesimply brought ourhands together topray that help willcome from the De-partment of Sport toequip us. As a sportscouncil, wehave beenbelittled,” says Mo-dise.
Tshidiso Thoahl-ane, senior sportscouncil officer, hum-bly appeals to allstakeholders to comeon board and assistwith any kind of help:
“We have qualitytalent but there are notools to boost or un-earth it,” he says.
He said there werenot evenpoles for net-ball, no space for rug-by, athletics, or acricket pitch.
“We need people
with passion to activate and boost sports,” headds.
Asked about having approached the Emfu-leni MMC for Sports, Councillor Chaka Rade-be, the council said they will schedule an ap-pointment to meet him.
There are no sport lights, water taps or toi-lets. Most facilities have been vandalised. “Wecannot blame the security guard. How can oneguard the area with no light or weapons?
Security guards’ lives are at risk. When theteams play, members must go out to use toiletsin the townships.
No talent withoutproper equipment
