Welcome to week 5! We are almost half-way through term two and it looks like Winter is definitely on its way. With the increase of rain and stormy weather it is important to be vigilant on the roads, especially when dropping off and picking up your children. Please ensure all road and parking rules are adhered to so we can keep our students and community members safe at all times . Workbooks Last week your child would have brought home their workbook for you to look at their standards of work and their level of competence with ordinary class work as well as with their selected assessment pieces. This is al- ways a good opportunity to sit with your child and discuss the work they are producing on a daily basis and talk in depth about their approach to learning. A student’s attitude, behaviour and effort has a huge influence on the standard and level of work produced. Workbooks are sent home again in week 8 this term, please make an ap- pointment with your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress. Year 6 Camp Those people who attended our assembly last Friday were entertained by our talented year 6 students who showcased all of the exciting events that took place whilst they were on their annual camp at Woodman’s Point Recreation Camp in Munster. Once again the students of Excelsior displayed impeccable manners and sports- manship whilst on camp. All students made us very proud and the feedback from the camp school staff and parents who helped with supervision was very positive indeed. Throughout their time away the students were pushed to their limits and they all had a brilliant week together exploring their capabilities, resilience and determination to complete a task regardless of how difficult it seemed. With the increase of rain and stormy weather it is important to be vigilant on the roads, especially when dropping off and picking up your children. Please ensure all road and parking rules are adhered to so we can keep our students and community members safe at all times .

Workbooks

Last week your child would have brought home their workbook for you to look at their standards of work and their level of competence with ordinary class work as well as with their selected assessment pieces. This is al-ways a good opportunity to sit with your child and discuss the work they are producing on a daily basis and talk in depth about their approach to learning. A student’s attitude, behaviour and effort has a huge influence on the standard and level of work produced. Workbooks are sent home again in week 8 this term, please make an ap-pointment with your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress.

Year 6 Camp

Those people who attended our assembly last Friday were entertained by our talented year 6 students who showcased all of the exciting events that took place whilst they were on their annual camp at Woodman’s Point Recreation Camp in Munster. Once again the students of Excelsior displayed impeccable manners and sports-manship whilst on camp.

A big thank you must go to our dedicated staff who organised and attended this camp (Mrs Wallace, Mr Hort, Mrs Horsley and Mr Liddelow) and to our parent helpers who also joined in on all activities.

MERIT AWARDS

IPAD INITIATIVE

On Tuesday 16 May, Mr Corr from Winthrop Australia came in to show us how to effectively use the Ipads. We are

learning about Australia's neighbouring countries and Mr Corr showed us how to do an advanced search and to

import an image into the Book Creator app. Mr Corr will work with us fortnightly and we will be discovering more

facts about New Zealand, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and the Pacific Islands. We will then become

experts and teach our new skills to the other year three students.

A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM YOUR CHILD(REN)

Hello Dad/Father Figure,

We, along with our school, would like to invite you to attend our school’s introduction evening. This will be an informal but informative event just for Dads and Father Figures to attend that will provide you with some information about what The Fathering Project is, what they think are important things about being a Dad and how they can help you and the other Dads in starting a “Champion Dads” group at our school.

This will give you more opportunities to have fun with us, give us each a chance to make new friends and help us to build an even stronger school community. The Fathering Project will present to you and the other fathers and father figures so you can meet, talk, share and support each other in starting a group and helping you to be the Best Dad you can be.

DATE: WEDNESDAY 14 JUNE 2017 TIME: 7.00 – 8.00PM VENUE: EXCELSIOR STAFF MEETING ROOM RSVP: WEDNESDAY 7JUNE 2017

It would be great if you could come along and I hope you will learn some interesting ideas about being a Dad, talk about the exciting things we can do together and how you and the other Dads can have fun and help the school. YEAR 6 CAMP 2017

I knew from the first time I saw the flying fox that it would be my favourite activity at camp. I had that in mind until it was our turn to do raft building. It was sure to be boring, I told myself. I mean, how do you build a raft anyway? Raft building turned out to be the greatest thing I’ve ever done in my life! You learned how to work as a team, make a raft, how to paddle and how to swim in the open sea. It was an experience that I would never forget, no matter what. By Siddhi, C4

My favourite activity at camp was archery. Our instructor did a demonstration for us. Then it was my turn. I did really well because I nearly shot a bullseye! We all had five arrows and I got all the five arrows on the target. By Shijie, C4

My favourite activity was definitely the flying fox because it was really scary when you climbed up the stairs to the 9 metre tall platform. Your harness is hooked on and when you jump off the platform it feels like you’re going to fall through your harness but it catches you when you are about to scream! The

flying fox has a beautiful view of the ocean. By Fynlay, C6

Being at camp without my parents helped with my independence. I got really

close to all my friends so now we all know each other really well. Doing all the

activities tested lots of skills, such as map reading, interacting with other

people and so much more. This was an amazing thing to do. By Ana, C6

‘Challenge By Choice,’

We began with 54 incredibly excited students and 4 extremely dedicated staff

members, whom all attended the annual year 6 camp at Woodman Point Recreation Camp.

At dawn each morning, students followed up the morning sound-off with a fitness session, be

it at times quite humorous and entertaining watching the many different interpretations of the

given task. Fitness was then followed by the daily dorm inspections and points were

awarded for performances prepared to entertain the teachers. After dorm inspections

students would prepare themselves for the day’s activities with a hearty breakfast.

Everyone will agree that camp meals were amazing, with cooked breakfast every morning. Lunches

consisted of burgers with salad, pizza with salad, DIY rolls and Subway with cookies. Morning and

afternoon teas kept us satisfied with biscuits and fresh fruit platters.

Students took rostered turns to set the dining room tables, the best being the evening meal which filled

any little spaces that hadn’t possibly already been filled. The menu for evening meals consists

of; lasagne and salad followed up with banoffee pie, chicken cacciatore and salad with a very

delicious chocolate mousse (I’m pretty sure I saw a few consumed in seconds!), the mid week

Wednesday night meal was a very much appreciated roast dinner with dessert being custard

and strudel, which brings us to our final evening meal of moroccan chicken and rice followed

with jelly fruit cups. It’s pretty safe to say that no one went home hungry.

Throughout the week, students were able to participate in a wide variety of non-stop activities

such as; vertical Challenge, flying fox, rock climbing, team building, archery,

orienteering, search and rescue, raft building and kite making. Comfort zones were

broken and goals were achieved by all students.

Free time saw the year six’s playing football, shooting hoops, beach walks, building

amazing sand castles and filling out camp booklets.

Each night after dinner, activities continued; Monday night was a quiz night, Tuesday

night everyone went on a historic grounds tour and bush walk, Wednesday night was a

talent show and Thursday night was a disco.

The last day off camp came around and the students were asked to give a

show of hands for those who would like to stay another day, I’m pretty sure

that 54 hands shot up into the air without a moment of hesitation. During

camp week friendships were formed and life memories were made by all

attending.

On vacating the recreation camp, Woodman Point staff once again thanked

our teachers and commended us on our student’s manners and overall

behaviour. So well done year 6’s and

well done teachers!
