Excelling in Life, Led by Faith.

Dear Parents,

Yesterday we celebrated the achievements of our outstanding VCE students from 2016. In reality their results are a culmination of 5 or 6 years of dedication and commitment to their studies and must be recognised for the difficulty in attaining this level of excellence.

Last year our College had a 100% satisfactory VCE completion rate with 16% of our students achieving an ATAR of 80 or more and 68% of our students achieving an ATAR of 50 or more. Our students achieved 9 scores of 40+ in their academic studies which places them in the top 8.8% of all students who have undertaken Unit 3/4 VCE studies. An excellent achievement!

These students were acknowledged for their achievements through the presentation of a framed certificate and gift in recognition of their outstanding efforts.

The top scoring students were:

Jessica Handisides who achieved a score of 40+ in Product Design and Technology.

Emily Smith who achieved a score of 40+ in Food and Technology.

Ashleigh Fogarty who achieved a score of 40+ in Further Mathematics.

Kayde Woolman who achieved a score of 40+ in Legal Studies.

Charlotte Frost, who achieved scores of 40+ in both Visual Communication & Design and Legal Studies.

Esther Craig who achieved a score of 40+ in Further Mathematics.

Matthew Maroske who achieved a score of 40+ in Further Mathematics.

Ethan Jolley who achieved a score of 40+ in Outdoor and Environmental Studies.

Further congratulations to students, Ethan Jolley on obtaining a “perfect” score of 50 for Outdoor and

Environmental Studies last year as a Year 11 student and to Jessica Handisides whose work was selected to be

exhibited in this year’s Top Designs exhibition as part of the VCE Season of Excellence 2017.

SPORTS STAR “SCHOOL OF THE YEAR”

Congratulations to our students and staff for our success in the Wimmera Eye Care “Sporting School of the Year” category award at the Horsham Sports and Community Club – “Sports Star of the Year” award evening. The award is due recognition for the amazing sporting achievements throughout our College that results from encouraging our students to extend themselves in all facets of school life and allows them to display true pride and school spirit.

Congratulations are also extended to student, Seb Dalgleish who won 'Sports Star of the Year - Official of the Year, Maggie Caris for her monthly nomination for the Sports Star of the Year Award and to the Horsham Hornets Under 14 team which won Team of the Year where a number of our students were members. Well done to all.

MEMORIAL SERVICE On Monday our Year 9 students will attend a commemoration of the anniversary of the bombing of Darwin. The service was conducted by World War II veterans and their stories detailed the hardship and risks that the local militia experienced. As Australians, we can sometimes take for granted the peace and freedom we experience. We should be grateful for our country and offer our thanks to the men and women who helped shape Australia through their defence of the country.

YEAR 7 WELCOMING BBQ We invite all Year 7 parents to our welcoming BBQ on Monday, 20th February at 6.00pm at the Coughlin Park Community Centre. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the staff of Year 7 and also make new acquaintances with parents. At approximately 7.15pm all Year 7 parents will receive detailed information and presentation regarding PAM (Parent Access Module).

OPENING AND INDUCTION MASS Our Opening College Mass will be on Friday, 24th February commencing at 9.30am at Ss. Michael and John’s church. Investiture of our Student Leaders will occur at the conclusion of Mass. Parents and families are most welcome. Student Leaders to be inducted include College Captains, Vice Captains and Leadership Team, House Captains and Vice Captains, SRC Representatives and our new Senior students. The Mass and Investiture of our students will be celebrated by Fr Peter Hudson.

SWIMMING SPORTS

Next Tuesday, we wish all Houses, but especially TARA, well and encourage parents to join us on the day in supporting the teams. The sports are an excellent opportunity for students to live life to the full. Not everyone is a talented swimmer but there are a diverse range of activities to encourage student participation. It is not uncommon for students to put pressure on parents and guardians not to attend school on these days but it is imperative that parents stand firm and point out that community events are an important opportunity to learn and to build both team and school spirit. Swimming commences at 10.00am and the carnival will be finished by approximately 2.30pm. Students will be dismissed from the pool at this time whilst bike riders and bus travellers will be escorted back to school by staff and dismissed from school at the appropriate time.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY

We offer our prayerful support to the Burford family on the recent death of Pat McDonall, Grandfather of Tahli Burford (Yr 9). Our prayers and thoughts are with you at this time.

Yours in the community of St Brigid’s College,

Peter Gutteridge

Principal

Yr 7 Parents/Carers,

We are informing you about an exciting development in the mathematics curriculum at St Brigid’s

College. Traditionally in schools, it has been extremely difficult for one teacher to cater to the

learning needs of 20 individual students. As a result, not every student has experienced success

in mathematics. Our teaching team is now working very hard to change that, armed with a new

system called Maths Pathway.

Your child’s maths lessons will be tailored to precisely what they are ready to learn. They might be filling in gaps in

prior learning, or working on extension activities. Your child will complete work individually in their maths exercise book,

guided by questions and videos from the iPad. They will also work with the teacher in small groups, and one-on-one.

The whole class will come together for rich learning and real-world mathematical application.

The tailored learning approach means that the teacher won’t be giving whole-class lectures from the front of the room.

It also means that students access any textbook-style material via the iPad, rather than from a standard textbook.

Meanwhile, the standard textbook will be used more as an extra resource.

If you would like more information about the Maths Pathway Learning Model, you can

visit www.mathspathway.com.

If you have any questions at all please contact one of the Maths Pathway teaching members,

listed below.

Conveyance Allowance

While the transport of students to school is primarily the responsibility of students’ families, the DEECD recognises the need of some students for assistance with getting to and from school. Therefore the Department provides financial support in the form of a conveyance allowance to assist some families. The Conveyance Allowance contributes to the cost of transporting children to attend their closest appropriate school/campus in rural and regional Victoria. The Conveyance Allowance is generally restricted to students attending schools located in rural and regional Victoria in recognition of the often limited public transport options to travel to and from school. To be eligible, students must live in regional and rural Victoria and live more than 4.8km by the shortest practicable route from their nearest appropriate government or non-government school. The shortest practicable route is defined as the shortest distance by road from a student’s house to the school gate. An allowance may be payable if students are conveyed to school by private car, private bus (usually school chartered) or public transport. Private car reimbursement is calculated on a one-way travel distance between the student’s place of residence and the school bus stop. A private car conveyance allowance is not available if the journey could have been made using a public transport service or free school bus. Those eligible families who have already completed a claim form do not need to re-register for the payment. You will need to complete and lodge a claim form however if you have a new student to St Brigid’s in 2017 and have not already completed a claim form for that particular student. Application forms are available by contacting the school (03) 5382 3545, or by downloading from the DEECD web site (see below) Completed Claim forms must be submitted to the school no later than 28th February 2017 for Semester One. Detailed information on the Conveyance Allowance and criteria for student eligibility is available from the Government website: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/management/schooloperations/studenttransport.htm

SPORTS NEWS CONGRATULATIONS!

The Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly - Sports Star of the Year Awards Dinner and Ceremony was held on Friday night.

We are proud to announce that St Brigid's College received 'Sports School of the Year' in recognition for the amazing sporting achievements throughout our school that result from encouraging our students to extend themselves in all facets of school life - in this instance, our sporting programs!

A big Congratulations also goes to Seb Dalgleish who won 'Sports Star of the Year - Official of the Year'! Well done Seb on this fantastic achievement! You set an excellent example and this award is in recognition of the stand out job that you do.

On top of that, Jordie McAuliffe and Maggie Caris were monthly nominees for the Sports Star of the Year Award and the Horsham Hornets Under 14 team won Team of the Year (several of our STBC students were in that team too).

Schools Cup Assault!

And so it begins!! Retribution for the boys, who almost took out the title with their first attempt last year and the start of the journey for the girls, who are keen to share some of the limelight.

Preparations have begun in earnest already for the Volleyball Schools Cup to be held in Melbourne in the first week of December.

Almost all of those who have chosen volleyball as their Yr 9 PE elective ( pictured below) have committed to having a go at the Schools Cup, so what better time to begin preparing than now!

Initial interest from the girls is so high that we have enough for 3 teams!!

However likely only one boys and girls team will be taken and we ask that they make the commitment to a domestic season first and also follow our normal school sport pathway playing at Black Ranges, Greater Western and State level. Our boys were good enough to qualify for state level matches last year.

Coaches are being canvassed and fundraising planned, so lets get behind TEAM SBC!

Black Ranges Tennis On Tuesday 14th February, 18 of our students travelled to Stawell with Mr. Butler and Georgia Barnett to compete in the Black Ranges Intermediate and Senior Tennis competition. St Brigid’s had four teams entered consisting of 2 senior girls teams, one intermediate boys, and one intermediate girls team. We all started playing at 10 in the morning and managed to finish by 2, trying our best and pulling all our strong moves during the matches. At the end of the day the senior girls team that included Lauren Bond, Skye Davis, Steffi McDonald, Jess McDonald and Amanda Walker had a WIN and will wait to play in Ballarat, while the other senior girls team came in second. It was an enjoyable day and a great opportunity for us to display our tennis skills. by Lintang Kitching
