Current high school students seeking to transfer may apply for limited openings in grades 10-12 for fall 2021, and grades 9-12 for February 2021 (mid-year transfer).

ADMISSIONS CYCLE AND OVERVIEW

Detroit Public Schools Community District offers enrollment in six examination high schools, which offer rigorous college and career preparation, competitive athletics and inspiring arts programs. All students are required to take an examination and apply for admission consideration. Communication and Media Arts High School will become the district’s newest examination high school in Fall 2021.

Three exam high school applications will be available for the 2020-21 admissions cycle. 1. Students entering 9th grade in Fall 2021 2. Students who attend a District school receive a 10-point bonus on their application. The test window for District 8th graders will be November 4-20, 2020. An application and exam are required, but District applicants do not need to submit a transcript unless then have attended a non-District school at some time during the last two school years.

Students who enroll in the district after the November application deadline may apply during Round 2. See page 15 for details.

Students who do not currently attend a district school must apply to be scheduled for testing. Applicants will select their preferred test date in the online application. See page 14 for exam dates.

Students who have Individualized Education Plans (IEP) or Non-Public Service Plans (for applicants who currently attend a private school) must upload their IEP or Non- Public Service Plan as part of their application. Please be sure to submit the entire document. Students whose IEPs/NPSPs identify accommodations will be given the applicable accommodations identified. Please note that not all plans specify testing accommodations.

Applicants are required to supply the names and contact information for three people who can serve as references. Parents/guardians and close relatives are prohibited from serving as references.

Applicants who currently attend a DPSCD school and have continuously attended school in DPSCD for at least 2 years: You will be required to enter your DPSCD Student ID. Please have it handy. This is the number you use to log into Clever and other learning tools. You also can find your ID number on your report card and in the PowerSchool Parent Portal.

Students who do not attend a DPSCD school, or who had an interruption in their enrollment in DPSCD within the last 2 years must include the following with their application:

• A transcript that clearly shows your Cumulative Grade Point Average OR • Report cards from the two most recent consecutive school years: 2018-19 and 2019-20

Students enrolled in a DPSCD school continuously for at least 2 years will be required to enter their DPSCD Student ID. The DPSCD ID is the number used to log into Clever and other learning tools. The ID number is on student report cards and can be found on the Parent Portal.The student’s essay is limited to 750 words, which must be typed or pasted directly into the application. The following are guiding questions that should be answered in each essay:

1. Which Examination High School(s) do you want to attend and why do you want to attend? 2. What makes you an exceptional candidate for admission? 3. Describe one or more qualities that make you stand out and provide examples to demonstrate those qualities to the admissions team. 4. How will admittance help you achieve your goals for the future?

If the report cards do not show the applicant’s Cumulative Grade Point Average, one will be calculated using the report cards submitted. The GPA calculation will be based on Math, ELA, Science and Social Studies gradesonly. Due to the impact of Covid-19, grades from spring 2020 will not be included in the calculation. The GPA is worth up to 30 points. Five additional points are applied to applications that contain a cumulative GPA or the components required to calculate one by the application deadline.

Students applying to enter 11th or 12th grade must supply a transcript and/or report cards that show your entire high school academic record. Other standardized test scores may also be required.

APPLICATION SCORING

The total application score is based on the student’s examination score, grade point average, and student-authored essay. The exam is scored independently by the test provider and each essay is reviewed by two or more independent reviewers. The average of the reviews serves as the student’s Essay Score.

Applicants who live within 1 mile of the Marygrove campus will receive 10 additional points on their application, while those who live within 2 miles will receive an additional 5 points on their application. Please see the Marygrove catchment map on page 7 for more detail.

ABOUT THE EXAM

2020-21 EXAMINATION HIGH SCHOOLS

Applicants will take the High School Placement Test (HSPT), which is a paper-pencil test that covers Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Science.

Test administration time is generally 3.5 hours for all students. Out-of-district students can expect to spend about 4 hours at their test location, including arrival, testing, breaks, and check-out. The test may only be taken once per application cycle. Students who take the test in November or December may not take it again in July.

Due to COVID-19, the typical structure of an Exam High School Admissions test administration has been redesigned for the safety of everyone involved. Social distancing will be enforced at all phases of the testing process, including sign-in, the testing environment and departure. DPSCD students may contact their school directly for details on exam high school test dates and procedures.

TESTING AND COVID SAFETY

Out-of-District applicants will be assigned an arrival time on the date they selected. Student arrivals will be staggered to maintain and control social distancing.

MASKS — Everyone who enters the building (parents, students, etc.) is required to wear a mask. Masks will be provided to anyone who does not have one.

SOCIAL DISTANCING — Social Distancing will be enforced in all aspects of the exam process. Test rooms will be capped at 12 students, students will be seated to maximize distances, and rooms will be sanitized between test sessions.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES — Cell phones, smart watches and other electronic devices are prohibited. Students may check in their electronic device, and it will be securely stored during testing.

SIGN IN AND SIGN OUT — To increase safety, sign-in and sign-out will be paperless.

PENCIL AND SCRATCH PAPER — Students may bring their own pencil, though sanitized pencils will also be available for all students who need them. Scratch paper will be provided by the test administrator. Hand sanitizer will be available for all students.

Students may petition to request a reconsideration of their school assignments or denial of admission to the exam high school of their choice. Applicants may petition as many schools as they desire. School decisions are final.

The Round 1 petition window for students who want to attend a school to which they were not admitted will be January 15-February 15, 2021. The petition deadline is firm. Students who miss the deadline will have their petitions reviewed after Round 2.

Students who choose to participate in the petition process will be required to submit a Petition Form in Submittable.

The electronic form must be accompanied by the following items:

• Student-authored essay indicating why they should be accepted. This must not be the same essay submitted with the original application.• Three letters of recommendation OR two references and a supporting artifact. One letter of recommendation must be from a teacher in a core academic subject area.• Most recent transcript or report card

Additional details with specific instructions will be sent to applicants via Submittable on January 15.Because of the short timeline, Mid-Year Transfer students who are declined will have their applications reviewed by the school. The decision that is announced will be final.
