Since the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians in 2008, the Australian Curriculum has guided teaching and learning in terms of general capabilities. This is because a relevant and effective education must support students to develop the general capabilities which are needed for them to be engaged and self-motivated learners, and confident and creative individuals who have the personal resources for ongoing success and wellbeing.

It is interesting to compare ‘a capability’ to ‘a skill’ and understand why ‘a capability’ is the preferred term when describing effective learning and educational success. A skill is the ability to perform a task and solve a problem whereas a capability is the ability to apply knowledge and skills confidently, effectively and appropriately in complex and changing circumstances,

Like the Australian Curriculum, the NSW K-10 Syllabus also identifies the general capabilities for students:

• Critical and creative thinking• Ethical understanding• Information and communication technology (ICT) • Intercultural understanding • Literacy • Numeracy• Personal and social capability

A recent paper by the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation discusses research by cognitive scientists in regards to the general capabilities. This research reminds us that while general capabilities can be applied in any area, they cannot be developed independently of content knowledge. The research clearly shows and reinforces the approach to education that we are familiar with, that all general capabilities need to be developed through the curriculum in the key learning areas which include Creative Arts, PDHPE, English, Mathematics, Geography, History and Science. For example, the ICT capability could be developed through an Art lesson such as where a student uses a computer aided design program to create an illustrative response.

For general capabilities to be effectively developed, it is therefore important that teachers have subject expertise in one or more curriculum areas. Subject expertise can be understood as an academic or technical understanding of a particular subject area which includes knowing facts and concepts in the subject. Subject expertise is also dependent on a range of teaching strategies that engage students in their learning including explaining demonstrating new concepts.

Together, subject expertise and teaching strategies create the conditions in which the range of general capabilities can be developed.

General capabilities are about students developing a wide and adaptive set of knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions to think deeply and respond to the increasing complexities of our world. These general capabilities, which require teachers to know the content of their subjects, are about students developing their capacity to actively engage as successful and accomplished citizens.

Kindergarten have had many fun and enjoyable moments over the past few weeks!

In week 3, Kindergarten students experienced their very first Athletics Carnival! Students participated in many fun activities including hurdle races, sprints and shotput. All students thoroughly enjoyed the event and had a fabulous time being active! Well done to all students for getting into the house spirit and cheering on your fellow peers!

To celebrate Education week, an Open Night was held at Ashfield Public School and provided an opportunity for community members to visit our school and learn about all the fabulous opportunities and learning experiences available at our school. It was fabulous to see many parents and carers from our school attend the event!

Science Week was celebrated in Week 4 this term. We held the annual BeeBot Cup which was lots of fun. Lachlan and Rose were our winners! Kindergarten students visited other classrooms around the school to explore and observe other students Science experiments. During the class visits, we saw many impressive and interesting Science experiments and enjoyed listening to our peers’ scientific explanations of their experiment. During Science Week, Kindergarten students were also busy designing and constructing their own Teddy Bear shelter. Our aim was to design and construct a shelter for a toy teddy bear that would keep it dry in the rain. We all tested our shelters (we even filmed it) with a watering can and had huge success. We have been learning about Fair Testing and our experiment was part of that initiative. Thank you to all parents, students and teachers who helped and visited our classrooms!

Kindergarten have commenced their dance program this term in preparation for the ‘Night at the movies spectacular!’ We are learning a dance from the “Lion King”. The children are excited to attend each week as they practice and rehearse their amazing dance moves!

We look forward to the many exciting events ahead of us! Well done.

Term 3 is a busy term here at Ashfield Public School. Stage One have enjoyed participating in festivities and events for Education Week, Science Week, and Book Week. We have also loved the opening of Badalya, a great place for delicious and nutritious food.

We want to extend a huge thank you to all the parents and carers who put in so much effort to ensure that their child can participate in all the activities offered here at Ashfield PS. We know you work tirelessly and that this term you have been such an important part of making our Science Week and Book Week events the huge success that they were.

Back in our classrooms we are still growing our plants which we have used as an example of a fair test and to see which type of water plants need to grow. We have now started exploring the current drought we are experiencing in Sydney and discussing ways that we can capture water for re-use, a now vital part of our lives with the current water shortage we are experiencing. The teachers have been so impressed by the depth of knowledge our students possess and we are excited to see their ideas come to life as we use a design thinking process to create our very own device to capture and reuse water. Please keep bringing in recycled materials that students can use in these devices. You will have a chance to view these and hear all about them at our Student-Led Conferences in Week 8.

And finally, we are busy practising for the upcoming school performance. Thank you to those families who have already sent in costumes in a labelled bag. We are looking forward to a fantastic performance.

Stage 2Stage PageAnother busy term full of learning and problem solving.

The Athletics Carnival was a huge success with students participating in a range of field and track events. All students showed their athletic talents as well as demonstrating great sportsmanship and resilience.

The future belongs to the curious and observation is the key to being curious. Science Week at Ashfield Public School saw all students question, explore and conduct scientific experiments in order to investigate the science behind it all. There were amazing displays of hands-on science experiments presented in all Stage 2 classrooms.

The 2019 Book Week theme is Reading is My Secret Power. All students and teachers are meticulously preparing for the Special Book Week Character Parade. The entire week is packed with interesting activities including, the Author Talk visits to the Ashfield Library, Book Week performances for each stage and the students’ artwork on their special Book Week book.

Nina in 3/4M represented the school at the zone in the Regional Final of the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition in the Stage Two category. She delivered a wonderful prepared speech in her eloquent style and an amazing impromptu speech that won a special mention as ‘the most remarkable impromptu speech of the day’ by the adjudicators.

All teachers are looking forward to the Student Led Conferences. This is a time for your child to showcase their knowledge and understanding in Design Thinking. Students will be leading the conference.

We are also fast approaching our Biennial School Dance Performance. The preparations are under way and the dances are looking amazing.

Stage 3Stage PageBook week is a very important time where Stage 3 can appreciate amazing literature from great authors. Stage 3 enjoyed the visit from well-known author Mark Greenwood and have been enjoying the novel Lenny’s Book of Everything for Book Week. Stage 3 were very excited to present their costumes, especially the Year 6 students for the Book Week Parade. We are looking forward for all the amazing costumes for Book Week next week.

Science Week was a very busy start to the term where students completed experiments which then could be applied to the real world. The Stage 3 students did a remarkable job in setting up and conducting their fair testing. We are looking forward for next year’s experiments!

The 2019 Athletics Carnival was such a success! It was great to see every child given the opportunity to compete in both track and field events on the day. Congratulations to all students who represented Ashfield at the Zone Athletics Carnival in Week 5. We are all so impressed with your dedication and school spirit on the day. What a great demonstration of athleticism!

Monday 19th August, 12 representatives from Stage 3 represented Ashfield Public School at the RoboCup Junior NSW Competition. Students used the EV3 Lego Mindstorm Robots to complete a “rescue” by travelling along a black line with various sensors and complex code to ensure their robot would recognise and react accordingly to different obstacles. Our students may not have made it to the finals but they had a fabulous day with lots of rich learning. We look forward to improving for next year’s competition!

Stage 3 have been practising their dances in preparation for the Stage 2 and 3 performance in Week 9 on the 19th September. Students have been reminded to bring in their costumes so we are ready for dress rehearsals in Week 8. Parents and friends, keep an eye out for tickets going on sale in Week 6! We can’t wait for you to see our moves when we take the stage!

The

News Room

KBHACAshfield Public School has recently been working with some staff from the Kinchela Boys Home Aboriginal Corporation (KBHAC) as part of the school’s commitment to increasing its knowledge and understanding of the histories, cultures and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The KBHAC was established by survivors of Kinchela Aboriginal Boys Training Home, a ‘home’ run by the NSW Government for over 50 years (1924 -1970) to house Aboriginal boys forcibly removed from their families.

At the KBHAC premises, located in Redfern, there is a document displayed in the foyer. It is a very touching reflection about the importance of Redfern to the Aboriginal community. It was written by the survivors from the Boys Home.

What is so special about Redfern?

We were in our late teens when we go out of the home.

Even in the home everyone would talk about REDFERN saying, “That’s where all the Koori’s are.”

REDFERN was full of Koori’s.

REDFERN was the main meeting place where you felt like you belonged, where you felt comfortable and knew mostly everyone.

“I felt uncomfortable in other place and we were always drawn back to REDFERN a place where we felt a certain belonging.”

Connections that were shattered by the system, were then reconnected in REDFERN,

“I felt safe in REDFERN.”

“I met my brothers, sisters, cousins and even found my parents in REDFERN.”

“You could always find a bed and a feed in REDFERN.”

REDFERN meant community!

Book Report

The Book Thief - By Markus Zusak

It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath.

Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.

By her brother’s graveside, Liesel’s life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger’s Handbook, left there by accident,

and it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordion-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor’s wife’s library, wherever there are books to be found. But these are dangerous times. When Liesel’s foster family hides a Jewish fist-fighter in their basement, Liesel’s world is both opened up, and closed down.

SRC ReportHello parents, teachers, students and members of the public,

What a great term we’ve had, so far! A little reminder that the suggestion box is back for business, were clearing it out every Monday and sharing your suggestions every Wednesday at morning lines. The book week parade was incredibly awesome, with a lot of costumes. Hopefully you had loads of fun making and wearing your costumes. The father’s

day stall is on the 30th of August. Make sure to get something for your father and celebrate their special day on Sunday. The item prices will range from $1 to $20. As you may know, the school play “A Night at the Movies”, is coming up, and it is important that you all bring in your costumes for the play in Week 9. The Science Fair was a huge success, and we’re sure you all were happy with your fantastic experiments! Well done to everyone for participating in the science fair this year. The student led conferences are coming soon and students are to tell their parents what they’ve been learning in class! It’s going to be on the 17th of September. And we think that the students that went to zone at the Sydney Olympic Park athletic centre on the 21st of August did a great job.

Game of the WeekHoLLoW KNIgHtA two dimensional adventure action game with amazing hand drawn art. Journey to Hallownest, a vast and ancient underground kingdom inhabited by

a bizarre collection of insects and monsters. Players can create their own path as they explore ruined cities, forests of fungus, temples of bones and other fantastic lands, all on their way to uncovering an ancient mystery. As well as being a fun game there is also an interesting lore to discover.

We rate this a 8.9/10

gamer news: While there are plenty of ways to play Smash Bros. Melee, ledge grabbing, or ledge camping - is one that has annoyed players for many years. Ledge grabbing is when players grab the ledge and hang out, baiting the opponent into a mistake. The main culprit of this tactic is Jigglypuff, who people play against so defensively, thanks to her ‘floaty’ speed and ledge grabbing. Now, Super Smash Con has introduced a ledge grab limit of 60 per game.

LACLA Report

Children all around the world have access to an education, mostly because it costs no, or little money. In Australia we are lucky, because public education is free. In Zambia however, that is not the case. Any spare change that you have, you can put into the buckets in your classroom and you will have helped a child get an education. We will have a fundraiser later this term to raise further funds for LACLA.

Deadly Kids ReportBunya Mountains Gathering

The bonyi (Gubbi Gubbi word for the bunya pine) is a distinctive tree, native to Queensland. It once only grew in the Bunya Mountains and the Blackall Ranges.

In the past nuts were harvested by climbing the trees using a strong vine looped around the tree and the climber’s waist. Cones could also be found on the ground after they broke off and fell from the very top of the tree.

The last Bunya Gathering is believed to have been held in 1902. The introduction of government settlements displaced Aboriginal people and the disruptions brought a stop to the event.www.qm.qld.gov.au/Find+out+about/Aboriginal+and+Torres+Strait+Islander+Cultures/Gatherings/Bunya+Mountains+Gathering#.XWN4-E2P42x

Dear Sincere Sienna and Lovely Lily,

Recently, I have found school work hard. Normally, I am perfectly fine with school and homework in general. Unfortunately, I find work difficult and I’m barely finishing my homework on time. I’m a bit upset because I don’t understand a lot of the work we receive compared to my classmates.

Sincerely,

Stressed

Dear Stressed,

Schoolwork can be hard sometimes. It’s okay not knowing everything all the time! That’s the reason why schools change up the learning program each term so you get to know a bit of everything. It’s okay if you’re not as good at certain things, as long as you try hard to get better at it! Just remember, try not to worry about how your other classmates are doing at school work, as that isn’t your problem and you should focus on yourself and how you are doing. You should also try to talk to your teacher about the issue or ask for help. You can also try asking a parent, a teacher, a tutor or a friend to help you with your work. Just make sure that it is in your own words and it doesn’t matter if you get it wrong, your teacher will help you improve. Your motivation is what matters!

Hope this helped!

Sincere Sienna and Loving Lily.

SCHOOL UNIFORM DONAtIONS

NEEDED Please consider donating unwanted uniforms that are clean and useable to the second hand uniform stall. Your donations help to give a family an affordable uniform and raise money to support the school at the same time! Uniforms can be dropped at the front office or handed in at the stall Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8:30am (next to assembly).

GARDEN CLUB

Thank you to our committed gardening club members who have been using their green thumbs in our Harmony Garden and Courtyard area every Monday afternoon. We have watered our plants through the incredibly warm weather, removed weeds and mulched our gardens. We were also able to plant some spinach, lettuce, basil and mint this term. Gardening is a wonderful opportunity to be in a multi-sensory environment where children can touch and feel plants and be exposed to the amazing scents of growing herbs.

We look forward to planting some more vegetables next term with the generous voucher provided to us by Bunnings Ashfield.

Our new, tasty, healthy and fresh-food canteen Badalya has now been in action for three weeks! How did we cope for so long without a canteen?! Have you or your child tried the delicious food yet?

Ordering - Head to www.quickcl iq.com.au to order break 1 meals. Orders must be placed by 8.30am each day and can be placed online or paid for with cash or EFTPOS at the canteen. Snacks for break 1 or break 2 can be ordered over the counter before school, or paid for with cash by students at both Break 1 and Break 2.

Volunteers needed – Thank you to all the wonderful parents who have volunteered so far at the canteen – your time and support is very much appreciated! But we still need more volunteers. Please head to the sign-up sheet at https://signup.com/go/XWqMHji to volunteer for a shift/s in the canteen. We would love you to volunteer on the week your child’s class is allocated to the canteen (See next column, My child’s class...) but you can also volunteer any time. You don’t need any experience. The canteen is super relaxed and organised and you’ll get to meet other parents. Come in for as little as one hour or sign up to come every week. Thank you in advance for your help!

Cancellations – if you would like to cancel a meal order, cut-off for cancellations is 8am each morning, which can be done easily via www.quickcliq.com.au or by phoning the canteen on 046092927

Packaging – all of the packaging is biodegradable and compostable.

For more information head to www.facebook.com/badalyaAPS and for anything else please feel free to contact Blair on 0406092927 or [email protected]

My child’s class is on canteen for a week – what does this mean?

So, you’ve been told your child’s class has been allocated to the canteen for a week but you’re not sure what this means? You’re not alone! While the school has out-sourced the running of Badalya (the new canteen) to Blair and Phil (parents of Lily and Mac), we wanted the canteen to also play a learning role within the school. This means that each class has been allocated a week. During your child’s allocated week, the class will have a special focus on healthy eating – with all students designing a ‘special’ menu option be sold during the week.

Did you see the watermelon slices that 5/6R sold last week? That was part of their learning for their allocated week. They also spent the week learning about waste management – with all students monitoring the recycling and reusing of containers etc for the week. And this is

what your child will do at some stage during the rest of the year.

When your child’s allocated week comes up (see the list below) we would like all the parents, relatives and friends of that class to volunteer in the canteen. This is a great opportunity for you to engage in your child’s learning and see what they’re doing and get to know the other parents from your child’s class. Head here to sign up to your child’s allocated week and see what it’s all about! https://signup.com/go/XWqMHji

And remember if you have more time available or can’t volunteer in your allocated week, you are welcome to sign up to any other time slot.

News Room

At the time of writing, work has started on the installation of our new-look fence and entrance. We’re excited about seeing the joy we know happens inside the school being reflected to the wider community in this colourful project. The art project on the fence was created by local artist Kim Siew and a group of APS kids. The resulting colour scheme was inspired by the kids’ input and is representative of the red of the school logo and some earthy tones to reflect the natural flora and fauna of the area.

The next stage will be the installation of artwork along the fence at the school office end of Wangal playground, leading from Liverpool road to the school office.

Thank you again to Anthony Albanese and the Community Building Partnership grant and local artist Kim Siew for making this possible. And thank you to parent Olivia Patchett who had the vision for this project and has made it happen.

Are you the next P&C executive member?Have you ever thought of running for President? We have an easier option than taking on Donald Trump. Our lovely P&C has a limit of two years for the office bearers so our President, Treasurer and Secretary all have to step down in November this year.

If you’ve ever wondered if you could take on a role on a P&C committee, you’re in luck. You couldn’t wish for a more well-adjusted and helpful lot! Contact us on [email protected] if you have any questions or are interested in standing for office next term. New kindy and OC parents very, very welcome.

Have you seen our new fence?
