Whilst in conversation on ABC Radio, Pasi Sahlberg, a professor of Education Policy at the Gonski Institute,

said that students should love to go to school. This very universally accepted tenet is articulated via NSW Department of Education’s Wellbeing Framework for Schools: a school must develop healthy, happy, successful and productive individuals.

So how do we make our schools the happiest places to be, where quality learning environments enable students to connect, thrive and succeed? Professor Sahlberg said that before all else, successful and happy schools depend on positive relationships between teachers and the students.

Establishing, maintaining and strengthening successful relationships between teachers and students depends on many factors. It includes the ability of the teacher to:

• have high expectations that every student will rise to the challenge of learning and succeed.

• implement interesting and well-planned, well-researched lessons that engage students with personalised and differentiated learning and support.

• provide clear feedback to each student as to why they are learning something, how it connects to what they already know, what they are expected to do, how to do it and what it looks like when they have succeeded.

• maintain a safe and well-managed classroom that minimises disruptions, maximises instruction time, and encourages students to engage in learning.

Successful relationships between teachers and students also depend on the teacher:

• maintaining a high energy level powered by a dynamic force of passion and whole-hearted enthusiasm.

• telling rich and meaningful stories, and presenting worthwhile and relevant content in an interesting way.

• using laughter to hold attention and create memorable and joyful lessons.

• being supportive and encouraging, with conversations, facial expressions, body movements and tone of voice, all combining to clearly indicate the belief in the worth of every individual.

• becoming a learner and modelling the learning process to share the wonder of discovering the unknown, the resilience to embrace challenges and make mistakes, the joy of success and the understanding that learning is for everyone.

Research shows that teachers who are able to create positive teacher-student relationships who are more likely to have above average effects on student achievement and wellbeing. When a student has a good relationship with their teacher they are more willing to have a go at hard work, to risk making mistakes, and to ask for help when they need it.

It is what teachers know, do, and care about which is very powerful in the learning equation. Strong teacher-student relationships shape the way children think and act in school and improve how well they do at school. Indeed, it is the relationship that each child has with their teachers that can make school a very happy place for them to be.

What a busy term it has been so far. Early Stage 1 Teachers commend all students on their efforts and engagement in all areas of their learning. We are excited to share our learning journey this week!

Early Stage One have been actively preparing for the upcoming Bee-Bot Competition. We have been using the Bee-Bots to promote Literacy and Numeracy within our classrooms. We have observed many students confidently interact with one another as they discussed what paths Bee-Bots should take next, explained why it did not go on a certain path and found solutions collaboratively. This was a great learning opportunity for students to engage, interact and communicate through problem solving.

For the Science Fair in Week 5, Kindergarten students have designed and tested their very own kites! Students have used materials like paper, cardboard, plastic and sticks to create a kite and video recorded the process. We have seen many unique designs via Seesaw and were excited to share with our classes!

Thank you to all the students for your efforts in preparing for the weekly news. We have had students creating Powerpoints, posters and also bringing in photographs to support their news presentations. Well done to all, we look forward to seeing more in the weeks ahead!

Please continue to follow us on our class Twitter for updates of students’ learning and engagement.

Stage One are thoroughly enjoying our third term of the school year and have been busily working on so many fabulous projects.

We are simply loving our dance lessons with Dance Fever where we are exploring the elements of dance across a range of genres and time periods. Some of the dance styles we are learning to do include Hip Hop, 90s, Jive, Tango and the Big Top. Ask us to show you some of our moves!

Science Week was a huge success! We had the opportunity to share our scientific thinking in our virtual Science Fair on Seesaw. The student contributions were outstanding and exploring the posts was such a fabulous addition to our learning about the Physical World. Science Week also meant we held our annual Robocup competition! Two representatives from each class worked together to complete the challenge. We have also designed, created and tested our much anticipated Marble Runs. Thank you for sending in so many fabulous resources!

We have also continued our Chinese lessons with Miss Chi. We are practicing the words for different body parts with correct pronunciation. We can tell how inflections can change the pronunciation.

We are thrilled to dress up as our favourite book characters to celebrate Book Week. This year the theme is ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’ and we are excited to be reading some of the outstanding nominated books for the awards.

We have been busy working on individual and collaborative artworks for the upcoming Art Fair. We are looking forward to proudly showcasing what we have created which is centred around the theme of Environment.

Please check our class Twitters to see some of the fantastic things we have been up to!

Stage 2Stage PageStage 2 are enjoying their learning experiences, be it, writing convincing persuasive texts or exploring the concept of fractions and decimals. As well as investigating, experimenting and sharing our big ideas in preparation for the science fair.

This year’s Book Week theme is ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’. The character parade is on Thursday, 27th August. We are certain that all students (and teachers) are eager to dress up as their favourite book character and celebrate the love of reading that we all share.

National Science Week was amazing. This year each student spent time delivering their Big Ideas via Seesaw for their peers to view. We had very interesting ‘Big Ideas.’ From why do we sweat to what are black holes? Congratulations to all the Stage 2 students for their commitment to Science Week and learning.

Stage 3Stage PageWhat a great way to celebrate the middle of the term with Science Week! Stage 3 did an outstanding job creating exciting and informative podcasts and videos, teaching their peers about big scientific questions. Make sure to have a look via your child’s Seesaw account.

The book parade is on tomorrow and we look forward to seeing all the wonderful costumes showcasing your favourite book characters! Try to be original and think outside the box. Teachers are hard at work behind their sewing machines creating their favourite costumes!

It was wonderful to see everyone in their full school uniforms today for School Photos. Remember to bring your hats with you to school daily to stay Sun Safe.

Please be mindful of the regular updates that are being posted via E-news. Due to regulations within schools changing frequently it’s a great way of staying updated with current news.

If your child is away please let your class teacher know via the E-news digital form. This form should be completed as soon as possible as teachers need to keep attendance updated.

Benefits of Visual ArtsIn Visual Arts, students develop knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes in Making and Appreciating by engaging with the concepts of artists, artworks, the audience and the world.

In Making they learn how they can investigate the world through selected subject matter (people, objects, places and spaces etc…) and work with the forms (painting, drawing, digital works etc…) in expressive ways. These investigations of subject matter and the forms are further developed in their Appreciation of artists, designers, craftspeople, architects and their works.

Here are four reasons why the Visual Arts are important in education:

The Visual Arts develop children’s motor skills

This is essential for many activities including writing. Using a paint brush or shaping modelling clay develop gross and fine motor dexterity and control.

The Visual Arts help children to appreciate numeracy

Number concepts and classification can be introduced while students work with simple collage materials and beads. Art is not only about emotion, colour or aesthetics, but also about patterns and problem solving. This helps students to better understand the concepts surrounding numeracy.

The Visual Arts build children’s self-esteem

Visual Art give students the autonomy to express themselves. As a group activity, students working together provides them the opportunity to give each other feedback, which aids in learning how to receive criticism and praise from others.

The Visual Arts build the creative side of the brain

As students learn about and create Visual Art, they become individuals who are creative and innovative.

Library NewsCongratulations to 430 students who completed the Premiers Reading Challenge. What a tremendous achievement for our school. Qualifying students will receive their certificates in Term 4.

Homework Club has been attended by 80 students each week. It is terrific to see Year 3 students taking the opportunity to get some extra assistance from their teachers. It is never to late to join Homework Club on Thursday afternoons from 3.00pm-4.30pm.

The Thursday bookclub has been meeting regularly thanks to an enthusiastic duo who have encouraged a group eight who met to discuss books. The students are attempting to write their own book so we look forward to reading a creative publication.

Every day the Library is opened during Break 2. Activities are varied and popular. They include origami and papercraft, chess, Lego and construction play, jigsaws, reading, drawing and relaxing with friends.

PSSA ReportUnfortunately, PSSA still has not started and we do not know whether it will start or not. It seems very unlikely that winter PSSA will start but we can always hope for summer PSSA. Instead of doing PSSA every week on Friday we go to Ashfield park to do sports and fun activities. We hope you are enjoying the sports on Friday when we walk to Ashfield Park. At Ashfield Park we do many activities such as soccer, relays, captain ball, dancing, and many more fun activities.

SRC ReportGreetings students, parents and carers! We have had an excellent start to Term 3 and have been very busy, with NAIDOC week, and our handball competition in week 4. Thank you and well done to all the people who joined in the competition, you all did so well and you should be very proud of yourselves. We wish we could crown you all champions but out of the 83 people, the winners were announced at assembly, so a special well done to you. We also had a great time participating in the ‘Science Fair’ (which was online). We also hope that everyone has enjoyed sport at Ashfield Park, which the students from years 3-6 have been participating in. This term our school has been participating in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge, so make sure to be safe and healthy while exercising. During

our SRC meetings everyone has been extremely enthusiastic and diligent to share your ideas and suggestions. Remember to put your ideas in the suggestion box, which is near the office, so we can talk about your amazing ideas at the next SRC meeting. Please remember to keep your suggestions sensible.

LACLA Report

Term 3 is here, and LACLA needs more donations! By now everyone should know what LACLA is, and contribute regularly to your classroom’s bucket. So if you ever find a spare coin in your pocket, consider donating it to LACLA, because 5 cents can buy a pencil! Due to technical difficulties, many reports have not been published in the newsletter for a few weeks, and the LACLA report was one of them. Now that it has been published, we hope to see lots of donations coming in soon. Later this year we will organize more fundraisers with the SRC.

Thank You For Reading!

About DASH and DOTSSTAGE 1

There are these robots called DASH and DOTS which Stage One use to learn coding and computational thinking. They have been delivered by two year 6 students called Alexandria, and Elana to various Stage classes when they are needed. The teachers from 1S, 1M, 1/2P,2E, 2X and 2T, will ask “Can we have the DASH AND DOTS for 2 hours?” then Elana and Alex will take them to the classrooms. Stage 1 teachers and students are very thankful for the help that they receive with transporting the robots around. They are a great resource for learning all about coding. They are used with an iPad which controls their movements.

Dear Moralistic Michelle and Vivacious Veya,

I have a problem. When my friends get into an argument it really upsets me and I am not sure how to help in this situation. I don’t want to be in between them because when they aren’t arguing they are the most supportive fabulous friends. I do not want our friendship to end based on a silly argument. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Dear Dear Anxious Annie,

Sometimes friendships can have problems and it can be hard to know what to do. We’ve got some tips to help you out. Fights don’t have to have a negative ending! Dealing with or overcoming a fight together can make your friendship stronger. Some strategies you and your friends could use: listen to one another, be respectful, take time out and Allow some time to calm down and relax. When you’re ready, reflect on how you feel and what happened. Then you should all be able to move forward.

Good luck,

From Vivacious Veya & Moralistic Michelle

SCHOOL UNIFORM DONATIONS NEEDED

Please consider donating unwanted uniforms that are clean and useable to the second hand uniform stall. Your donations help to give a family an affordable uniform and raise money to support the school at the same time! Uniforms can be dropped at the front office or handed in at the stall Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8:30am (next to assembly).

GARDEN CLUB

Gardening is a wonderful opportunity to be in a multi-sensory environment where children can touch and feel plants and be exposed to the amazing scents of growing herbs.

We look forward to planting some more vegetables next term with the generous voucher provided to us by Bunnings Ashfield.
