Event Descriptions – All events are for teams of 1 to 2 students unless otherwise noted.
ALL CHARGED UP – Teams will be assessed on their knowledge of magnets, magnetism, and circuits.
BIOMASS – Each team will grow a plant from a seed, give a report of its growing conditions, and take a quiz on
plant growth.
BODY BUILDERS – Teams will demonstrate knowledge of the major systems of the human body in terms of their
functions necessary for human life.
BRIDGE-A-RONI – Teams will design and build, ahead of time, the lightest bridge that holds the most weight (up
to 10 kg) using only pasta and glue.
DATA DETECTIVE – Teams will analyze and create graphs based on given data.
DUCT TAPE CHALLENGE – Teams will be given a set of materials, including Duct Tape, and a task – such as
building the tallest tower, widest bridge, most buoyant boat, etc. They will then try to complete the
assigned in the allotted time. At the end of the build time, teams will test their structures to
determine the winner.
ECOLOGY EXPERTS – Teams will be assessed on their knowledge of marine, freshwater, estuary and arctic
ecosystems and biomes.
ENERGY MATTERS – Teams will be assessed on their knowledge of the physical properties of matter, physical
changes (including changes in states), energy forms, and transfer of energy.
FOSSIL FRENZY – Teams will be assessed on their knowledge of fossils and the fossilization process.
GENES R US – Teams will demonstrate an understanding of traits that may or may not be inherited, be able to
explain why organisms share similarities and differences, and use Punnett squares to predict
inheritance patterns of certain characteristics.
LARGE NUMBER ESTIMATION – Teams will be asked to estimate the answers to approximately twenty
questions requiring an estimate between one and one million.
MAP IT – Teams will answer interpretive questions that may use one or more state highway maps, city or county
maps, USGS topographic maps, Internet-generated maps, a road atlas, or satellite/aerial images.
METRIC MANIA – Teams will demonstrate their understanding of metric measurement by estimating and
measuring length, mass, volume, angles, and temperature and making calculations based on these
measurements (such as density).
PICTURE THIS – This event has teams of 3 students each competing in a contest in which one member draws
"clues" for the others to guess a science term or concept.
PROPELLER PROPULSION – Teams will build an airplane constructed of wood and paper. The airplane’s sole
source of energy will be one rubber band to fly for the longest time.
RAMP ‘N’ ROLL – Teams will design, build and test a gravity-powered vehicle released from a ramp, to travel a
certain distance and stop as close to the finish line as possible.
SUPER SLUTHS (Forensics) – Given a mystery scenario, evidence, and a list of possible suspects, teams will
perform a series of tests to draw specific conclusions about the scenario and suspects.
STARRY, STARRY NIGHT (Astronomy) – Teams will identify and demonstrate their knowledge of
constellations, planets, and other common celestial bodies in our universe.
TOADALLY RIBBITING HERPETOLOGY – Teams will be assessed on their knowledge of amphibians and
reptiles.
WEATHER PERMITTING – This event will test the team’s knowledge of conducting investigations and using
appropriate technology to build an understanding of global weather patterns.
WRITE IT, DO IT – This event tests a competitor's ability to communicate with a colleague. This event must be
done with 2 students.
WORK IT OUT – Teams of 4 will compete in a relay race to show their overall understanding of the topics
covered in all MESO events this year. Pairs of students will complete an activity or task and
answer quiz questions before their teammates can begin their portion of the relay.
