29. Was any need assessment exercise undertaken before the development of new
program(s)? If so, give the methodology :
i) Before the commencement of the Post Graduate course (MA) in Sanskrit in
2006, the department received the feedback from its undergraduate passed-
outs. This feedback expressed the opinion that, if MA course is taught by the
department, the students will be benefitted more.
ii) It was followed by a meeting of some experts of the parent university, i.e., CU
where the need of starting such a course was discussed along with other
logistics.
iii) After this meeting, another phase of discussion was arranged among the
faculty members and the administration to reach the final decision for
initiating the process of starting the course.
iv) Then, the issue was placed before the Governing Body of the college which
after considering all the opinions and suggestions decided to apply to the
Calcutta University for necessary permission.
v) At the last stage, a University Inspection Team visited the college and had a
meeting with the teachers of the department and the administration of the
college. They tried to judge the need of introduction of such course in this
college and they also saw the requisite infrastructure and man-power. They
opined in favour of introduction of Post Graduate Sanskrit course from the
session 2006-2007.
vi) Finally, the college received a permission letter from the University authority
in this regard.
vii) When the college shifted from the annual system to semester system after the
conferment of the autonomous status, the department restructured the
curriculum after considering current trends in this subject.
30. Does the department obtain feedback from
a. Faculty on curriculum as well as teaching-learning-evaluation? If yes, how does
the department utilize it? :
Manual for Autonomous Colleges Page 13 of 17
In the faculty meeting, academic matters are discussed and if necessary,
changes are brought into the curriculum and teaching-learning
methodology. As for example, senior teachers, especially those who were
once in University teaching, insisted on to start communicative Sanskrit in
undergraduate level. They further stressed on the importance of keeping
the medium of teaching in Sanskrit. The departmental teachers,
henceforth, changed the bilingual methodology of instruction and began
speaking in Sanskrit in all the classes of undergraduate course.
b. Students on staff, curriculum as well as teaching-learning-evaluation and what is
the response of the department to the same? :
The college administration hands over the annual online feedback report
submitted by the final year students at the end of the year.
The departmental teachers discuss the feed back in a meeting.
If needed, the suggestions are taken into consideration.
As for example, the students requested to invite some teachers of repute in
Kavya Specialisation. The department, after a thorough search invited
Prof Biswanath Mukherjee of Burdwan University and he has began to
give classes for the students of the said specialization.
c. Alumni and employers on the programmes and what is the response of the
department to the same? :
i) One alumnus and one expert from The Asiatic Society are members of the
Board of Studies of the Department according to the guideline of UGC.
They contribute significantly in curriculum designing and teaching-
learning process.
ii) Many of the alumni studying in different National institutes informally
convey their opinion about the course content and the method of teaching.
Sometimes, while visiting their Alma-Mater, they express their views in
this regard.

37. State whether the programme/ department is accredited/ graded by other agencies.
Give details. No
38. Detail any five Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Challenges (SWOC) of the
department
Strengths:
i. Autonomy in framing syllabus has opened the scope to keep pace with the
Manual for Autonomous Colleges Page 16 of 17
changing scenario in Sanskrit Education.
ii. Favourable teacher student ratio facilitates free and open interaction
among the learners and teachers which result in quick and effective
solutions of academic problems.
iii. Residential nature of the college provides the scope of 24 hours’ guidance
for the students and also peer group study.
iv. Rich library facility is also a source of inspiration for the students and
teachers to update and upgrade the level of academic standard.
v. Monastic members who are proficient in Ssnskrit and Indian Scriptures
offer active teaching assistance in the department which is a genuine boost
to the teachers and learners.
Weakness:
i. Poor skill in English language of the students stands in the way of reading
and understanding the famous English critical appreciations of Sanskrit
text.
ii. Vacant full time posts in the faculty are posing a great difficulty to the
regular teaching-learning of the department.
iii. Limited scope in the service sector for the students of Sanskrit is gradually
becoming a problem that may lessen the number of enrolment in future.
iv. The teaching of Sanskrit Language and Literature in school level is
neglected. Therefore, the background of the students who are choosing this
subject for their higher studies, sometimes appear much poor.
Opportunities:
i. More modernization of the curriculum may be done keeping in mind the
placement sector.
ii. Once faculty number is increased, the department may start the research
courses.
iii. Close and effective support from the illumined young ex-students of the
department can be utilized in a more effective way so that the fresh
learners of the subject get direct academic assistance from their seniors.
Manual for Autonomous Colleges Page 17 of 17
Challenges:
i. Developing English language skill of the students is a challenge to the
department so that they can understand the English critical appreciations
easily.
ii. To attract the students more in this subject is also a great challenge,
especially when the trend in the enrolment in this subject is declining.
iii. The dearth of full time teaching staff in the department is also a threat to
the academic development of the college.
39. Future plans of the department.
i) The department contemplates to start M Phil programme once the shortage of
fulltime faculty member is met, even partially.
ii) The department is planning to build up a separate manuscript section with
scanning facility.
iii) The department is also thinking to establish an official linkage with Sanskrit
Sahitya Parishat.
iv) The department is planning to publish a Sanskrit journal which will contain the
research-oriented articles of teachers and students.
