Monday Morning Madness

Focus GroupFocus Group• Before we even started the creation process of ‘Monday

Morning Madness’ we researched into genres and interests of our target audience (14-19).

• We collectively created a presentation that we intended to show our target audience; on this presentation we included videos, similar to what we wanted to create. For example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UWDcnTRCII)

• In this film you can hear how the music changes to fit with the action and to heighten the tension- we created a questionnaire to get some primary data,in this questionnaire we asked them what they thought of the music, “Did it become tedious?”, “Do you think that the music builds the tension throughout?” they answered these questions with good feedback, and we knew to include their opinions as they are our target audience.

• We created a Facebook page, we believed that this would be an effective way of reaching our target audience; as many of them tune into social networking sites such as Facebook.

• On the site we made sure to ask questions to make sure we obtained well rounded answers that we could use to develop our short film.

• Many of the answers were very helpful, the people that answered our questions and talked on our page were asked to do so because they were members of our target audience- it was important to see and hear their views. This way we knew we were headed in the right way.

1) Give a brief summary of the Storyline- (to make sure they understood the story line and make sure it wasn’t to hard to follow.)

2) What did you like about the video?- (to see what parts/scenes had most interested the audience, and why)

3) What didn't you like about the video?- (this was important, if we found that there was a general consensus about certain scenes that weren't liked, we could make an informed decision whether to take it out of the film or not)

4) Did the music fit the on-screen activity well?-( we wanted to know if the music added to the action or took away from the humour)

5) Was there a good variety of shots?- ( its important to keep the audience interested through various different things, did we succeed?)

6) What do you feel we could improve on?- (Important to get constructive criticism from our target audience)

CommentsComments 1) Give a brief summary of the Storyline: The teacher tells both the

male and female characters that they have an exam soon. The female character is hard working and stays up all night revising. The male character is lazy and stays in bed. In the morning both characters over sleep. The girl rushes to get to school whilst the boy takes his time but when they arrive at school they realise their exam is on a different day.

2) What did you like about the video? The music fitted together well with the action and there was good use of a variety of shots. It all fitted together well.

3) What didn't you like about the video? Some parts were a little confusing. It wasn't clear who the person in the frame was and why she did piano practise (although was that to show that she was hard working?)

4) Did the music fit the on-screen activity well? Yes it did.5) Was there a good variety of shots? Yes, a good mixture of close ups

and wide shots.6) What do you feel we could improve on? Showing the picture in the

frame more clearly (but that is a really minor point!)7) Any other comments and feedback? Really good, well done! :)

Vickie Page’s comments

Vickie’s comments were helpful, she talked about the story sometimes getting confusing, and about how she didn’t feel the piano scene was relevant, after commenting on this however she did say that it gives a sense that the character of Charlotte is hardworking.

CommentsComments1) A teacher warns two pupils (Charlotte and Joe) that their work is not up to standard,

and that they have an exam after the weekend which they must attend. Charlotte puts off all her revision for the exam until Sunday evening, but drops off to sleep halfway through, and eventually hurries off to bed - at 1 AM. Joe, however, sleeps for what seems like the whole of Sunday. On the following Monday morning the two go through their daily routines, with Charlotte's being the more hectic and rushed, while Joe hardly bothers with getting ready. They meet on the way to school, both late for the exam, and after a bit of a rush to get to the exam hall, they discover that it is in fact on Tuesday.

2) The concept of the video being a silent movie was great. :) A lot of funny elements, in particular the clock appearing out of nowhere, and the character's interactions with the camera, were used to great effect. The result was that the movie was very funny overall, and very spontaneous - I never really knew quite what to expect. Plus, the ending gave me a good laugh. :)

3) Can't really think of anything. I think I'll just answer question (6) instead. :P

4) The music fit each scene extremely well and really helped to convey the attitudes of the two characters. :) I noticed, however, that Charlotte had several different bits of music while Joe seemed to only have one. Perhaps the music could've been a bit more varied in that respect.

James’ comments continued

•5) Shots were varied well. Angled shots (like the one where Charlotte lands in her chair) were used effectively. The only part which seemed to recycle clips was when the video kept cutting back to Joe, asleep, although this was actually pretty effective. :)

6) While this was a very good video, it does appear to be a parody of the "silent" movies, so the intro (with Mr. Bliss's voice) and the parts with added sound effects were not absolutely necessary (unless I'm wrong and the syllabus states that you HAD to include sound effects somewhere in your video :P). The emotions of the characters came through very well, but I'd have liked to see a few more of their facial expressions - quite a lot of the time they had their face away from the camera.

7) As I said, this was a really funny video. :D I love the contrast you guys created between the two characters - Hermione's over-the-top facial expressions and Foxy's slouching movements were perfect. :PWhilst James highlights how he doesn’t think the

sound effects and the dialogue is necessary, we as a group made a conscious decision to include these. The dialogue at the beginning is important to make sure that the audience know a bit of background about the characters, to stop any confusion.

We also felt that including sound effects would add humour, our research (Looney Tunes) used sound effects really well adding the comical effect that we wanted to incorporated.

1)The teacher shouts at both students about an exam they have and their bad attendance, one goes home and just sleeps all night, while the other tries hard to revise, both wake up late and rush into school only to find their exam is actually the next day.

2) I really like the contrast between the two characters, i think you show it really well. I also like the bit where Hermione sits down, the noise makes me giggle.

4) Yeah haha, the bit where Hermione plays the piano is a bit random, but the music still fits :)(These are the only questions she answered)

Jasmine Highlights the scene where the character of Charlotte plays the piano, she commented that it was random and over the top, an effect we intended.

We created a logo that could be recognisable to our ‘fans’ so that if it popped up they would know what it was.

The ‘MADNESS’ font is also on our magazine and poster, the font links all of our ancillary tasks together.

What I learntWhat I learnt• If you are creating something for a specific target

audience, it is vital that you get feedback throughout the creation process.

• I think that the idea of having a focus group as the beginning of our process helped us greatly, we got positive and negative comments which made us able to pinpoint the type of film we needed to create for this age group.

• You should always make sure that the people that are helping you with your audience feedback know that you need both positive AND negative comments, many seemed reluctant to give constructive criticism.
