Evaluation – Questions 4 & 5

Page 2: Evaluation - Question 4&5

Target AudienceThe target audience for my magazine is:•18-24 year olds•Equally male and female•Interested in hip-hop/RnB/current and up-and-coming artists

As I was constructing my final production I asked questions to my focus group and used their thoughts and opinions in order to produce a product that will be tailored as well as possible to my target audience. Their feedback and thoughts were then used to adjust and amend the final outcome of my magazine

Attracting my target audienceThe target group for my magazine was aimed at both males and

females equally.

In order to attract both male and female audiences I mostly used neutral colours in my magazine such as the black and white which is the predominant colours along with pink. The use of the pink is intentional to attract the female market more through gender specific colour. From my research it was clear that most magazines of my genre are heavily male dominated with regards to audience and I figured that it would be much easier to attract a male audience and thought it would be best to purposefully put in additional details such as the pink colour to capture the female audience. Furthermore I used reception theory to attract my audience so they are able to relate to the artist featured in my magazine and this would’ve been even more effective for attracting a female audience if I were able to have used a female model as well.

Attracting target audience – Front cover

My front cover is bright and bold enabling it to stand out from other magazines. The colour scheme features neutral colours and a bright pink to overall be neutral in the audience it attracts. As my target audience is quite young, the use of big names as well as current artists will catch the attention mostly of the audience I wish to aim it at. Words such as ‘exclusive’ give the impression that my magazine has something to offer that other magazines do not and this helps to draw in the reader. The model used is male but goes against hegemonic norms and has a softer expression as opposed to an intimidating one in order to create a magazine that is also inviting to a female audience.

Attracting target audience - Contents page

For my contents page I featured a quote from a big female artist which is designed to be appealing to both male and female audiences to help create and equal target audience. The features in the magazine are very current and include sporting stories which is a key characteristic in reaching out to the male audience and the pink text colour is again used to keep the attention of female audiences.

Attracting target audience – Double page spread

I featured a background paragraph to the artist before the main text on the page as it provides the reader an insight to the artist who is new and up-and-coming. This way the reader can feel a more personal connection to the artist without the use of direct mode of address and has an idea of his background and a better understanding as well as giving the magazine a feeling of exclusivity as it has the otherwise unknown information. A the top of my page I used bold lettering for ‘I still need this sh*t’ as it is a play on words of the artist’s single which gave him his break to fame and the question in between it entice the audience as it leaves them thinking and curious to find out more.
