Who would be the audience for your media product?&

How did you attract/address your audience?

Evaluation Question 4 & 5

Targeting my Audience • 18-30• With the use of my focus group on Facebook I gained my

target audiences opinions and addressed them in areas of my production.

• It gave me an insight into what my target audience wanted to see and allowed me to fulfil their likes and avoid their overall dislikes

‘They all approved of the image, although some improvements could be made, the hole in the bottom of her foot needed to be edited out, I agree with this edit opinion and value that theyre looking at my image in detail. Another adjustment is that the image is not exciting enough and further editing can be made to develop, possibly using the shadowing images like my front cover idea.’

Artist and Audience Relationship• Use of young artist to relate with the younger audience.• Direct mode of address with the reader with eye-line shots, this

meant that personal relationships could be created- uses and grats.

• Admirable artists

Male Audience • Male audience from the male gaze (Mulvey) of the artist.• The mise en scene and shot type used with females lingers on

specific areas of the female body; lips, eyes, mouth and legs. Giving a suggestive feeling to the photo and attracting the males attention.

Female Audience• Female audience to relate and aspire to the female artists • Possibility of the male gaze conforming from female audience.• Diverse audience • My researched magazine Q used this• Stereotype for the front cover to have a female

Both genders attracted

• Gender stereotypes used as female is on the front cover.• Colours that appeal to both sexes not specifically one gender.• I conducted some primary research by using my year group

and my focus group and found that 80% of males would want to read my magazine compared to 70% of females. It is close in results and therefore I feel that my magazine is more unisex than predominately one sex, although with 10% more male it is possible here to support Mulveys theory of male gaze.

Class• The price of my magazine is £4.50, after doing some research this is a

slight increase on the average price so possibly I could attract the higher class.

• It is affordable so that can be an attraction, and with the language I use and the content it would more than likely appeal to people that can afford to do the activities that the magazine advertises and talks about.

• The play on words and the formation of images I have used to be appreciated and to get that a certain level of intellect is needed which could then link to a better education which could possibly be another link to a higher class upbringing.

• Although overall I feel that my magazine is affordable and that it can suit all classes and it is well rounded to all and my articles are easily relatable.

Ethnicity

Aiming towards all ethnicities- as there is no predominate race in the dance culture, but it could be arguably seen using only white people that my magazine is hegemonic. Although I feel that just so my magazine could be seen as pluralistic I should not need to approach other ethnic groups to feature and that as I did not intend for my magazine to just be aimed at one specific ethnic group that it is acceptable for all.

Niche Market and Mainstream• The content of my magazine is mainstream for the indie music genre, and

is not specifically niche.• The layout and design of my magazine is challenging a lot of codes and

conventions, it is more visual than textual. This could only appeal to a specific market that would be interested in finding out more although with the contrast against other magazines I feel that it will attract a large audience but would not be classed as mainstream.

Common Conventions

• Bold text for my masthead

• The language that my magazine contained followed the conventions of an indie music magazine, it was informal and related towards my target audience.

• Although my images where unusual, they were eye catching and you could argue that they follow the convention of attracting an audience, just not following the convention of using direct mode of address.

Preferred Reading• My front cover has no personal relationship with the reader and is more a

mystery and strikes the desire to find out more information but reveals the artists name. With minimal text this also would allow the reader to question what is in the rest of the magazine and to investigate.

• My double page spread and the image of the editor on my contents relates to the uses and gratifications theory, with the direct mode of address creating a personal relationship and personal integrative needs. Filling the cognitive needs and allowing me to give a preferred reading.

• Along with the following use of codes of conventions to also get a preferred reading.

• Using box outs and buzz words, this captivates my audience and allows them to relate to the article and draws them in to read more, this is specifically on my contents page.
