I created PR Magazineand

This is my evaluation

Kevin Lloyd Moke

• My magazine challenges the conventions of most Pop magazines.• It does this by instead of having a beautiful women across the front cover it has two unshaven men across

the front cover.• My magazine uses the convections of real media products by exploiting the sexuality of artists to attract

audiences, although my front cover may not directly appeal to a male audience it does appeal to a female audience.

• With my magazine I tried to use the conventions of MOJO’S November 2008 edition by having men rather than women across my front cover.

• As my magazine is a pop magazine I tried to keep everything bright and eye catching as most pop magazines consist of bright eye catching fonts to attract their audiences, just as MOJO has done with their bright red, yellows and white on their November 2008 edition.

In What Ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?

• I tried to create a front cover that would compliment my cover image and force readers to focus on it.

• I tried doing this by keeping text minimal and trying not to cover my cover image with any text.

• I used a colour scheme of black, red, light blue and white all to either compliment each other or to highlight certain texts which may be harder to see for the readers.

• The title for my magazine; “PR” was inspired by NME and Q, both were simplistic short and sweet titles that forced the reader to focus not on the masthead but on the cover image itself.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

• Representations are how certain things or people are presented to audiences, my magazine challenges the stereotypical representation of Pop artists.

• It does this by instead of on its front cover having perfect looking artists, it has “scuffed up shoes” band members Mark and Jakey boi looking quite unshaven and rough.

• The social groups I am targeting are late students, predominantly in their late teens, I have done this with my rather colloquial text and with the amount of text I have written for my double page spread, I kept the amount of text I wrote to a minimal to appeal to my audience as the audience I am aiming to target would not be interested in reading the amounts that are written in magazines such as Q.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why

• Retail music stores such as HMV or newsagents such as WHsmith may distribute my magazine but I would mainly want my magazine to be distribute in Music stores as this is where the real music listeners will go to purchase music magazines.

• My magazine will be produced by “The magazine production company” as they encourage the production of independent magazines.

Who would be the audience for your media product

• The genre of my music magazine is Pop music and the audience for my magazine is readers in their late teens who have a more casual sense of style, are not too bothered about designer labels or tracksuits from JD sports.

• My audience demographics are teens aged 16 and over who have no form of steady employment.• My magazine my not target younger teens but will definitely attract those that are genuine pop

lovers, and also readers that are 19+ and genuine pop lovers.

• My magazine will mainly target a female audience as it is mostly women who love pop music. • My targeting of women is reinforced with my front cover having two men on the front of it.• I used many conventions of music magazines to attract my target audience, one of them being that I

used bright fonts to catch the eye of my potential readers together with basic easy to read fonts. • I tried to take and manipulate a photograph that would appeal to a female audience with the use of

certain aspects of “mis en scene” and place it on the front cover of my magazine, placing all text around the photo to highlight “scuffed up shoes” as the most important thing in this issue of my magazine.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of

constructing this product• In the process of making my music magazine I have learnt many different techniques and lessons. I

have learnt how to better manipulate various design software such as “Adobe in design and photo shop” to end up with a product I’m happy with and that’s of a better standard.

• I have learnt how to better manipulate hardware such as camera’s to take better quality pictures, I learnt the importance of composition and how different composition can lead to different connotations.

• I have also learnt that there are many ranges of technologies available to use in the production of magazines, technologies such as USB's, cameras, audio recording devises and possibly mobile phones.

• I have learnt that the hardware used to produce music magazines is easily accessible but not as easy to use and takes a bit of time to just about get the hang of which has enlightened me to the fact that music magazines are quite difficult to produce and take a lot of hard work.

• I have also learnt that when taking pictures they must be carefully composed as they can be used to construct representations, if I had known this before hand I would have taken more care when taking photographs.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the

progression from it to the full product

• Looking back I have learnt that making a magazine is a time consuming project which needs a lot of thought, people and hard work to be dedicated to its production. I have learnt that front covers are not made to be colourful and catchy for no reason but to grab the attention of readers, I have also learnt that beautiful women are placed on magazine front covers to specifically target male audiences as magazine producers know that by exploiting a beautiful woman’s sexuality they will attract a male audience, which has taught me that nothing on the front cover of a magazine is there just for show but is there for a specific reason, and to represent something.

• Also in the process of making my music magazine I have learnt the importance of targeting a specific audience and that there are specific conventions used to target specific audiences which all must be in your mind when your producing a music magazine.
