Administrative Matters
Entry procedure
• Candidates must register before 1 October 2012.
• Candidates must supply either the original or a
certified copy of a document attesting to their

certified copy of a document attesting to their
personal particulars (birth certificate, certified
photocopy of an official document, etc.).
• The registration fee is fixed at € 80.32 per candidate.
In the event of failure this fee will not be reimbursed.
Candidates must hand in the following
documents by 1 October 2012:
• Form “Choice of examinations in the BAC 2013” Choices are binding and cannot be modified after 1 October

Changing choices
The changes of choice possible are:
• Mathematics 5 ---> Mathematics 3
• 4-period option ---> Compulsory 2-period course (same subject)

• A change the other way round is conditional upon the passing of an attainment test demonstrating the student’s ability to keep up successfully with the course requested.
• The substitution of one option for another is not permitted.
The examinations will normally cover the year 7
syllabus, but will also test knowledge gained in
previous years, especially year 6.

Pre-Bac
The part examinations will be organised as follows:
• A set of written examinations will be organised over a maximum of ten working days at the end of the first semester, i.e. at least two weeks after the Christmas holidays. All the subjects in which a written examination may be taken in the

subjects in which a written examination may be taken in the Baccalaureate will be examined, i.e.:
• Language 1
• Language 2 or Advanced Language 2
• Mathematics (3 and 5 periods)
• All options (4 periods)
Pre-Bac• In philosophy (2 periods), a short written examination will be
organised as part of the normal school week at the end of eachsemester. The final B mark will be the arithmetical average of the twosemester B marks.
• In biology, history and geography (all with two periods a week), twoshort written examinations lasting one teaching period will be

Candidates will take five written examinations:

• Language 2 or advanced Language 2
• Mathematics (5 periods) or

The oral examinations• Candidates will take four oral examinations.
The subjects in which an oral examination will or may be taken are as follows:
• Language 1 or advanced Language 1
• Language 2 or advanced Language 2
• History (2 or 4 periods)

• History (2 or 4 periods)or Geography (2 or 4 periods)or Philosophy (2 or 4 periods)
• Advanced mathematicsor one of the 2-period subjects : biology, history, geographyor philosophyor an option (4 periods), if not done as written exam
Uniformity of examinations
• All written examinations are harmonized and will be the same
for all candidates, irrespective of the language section to
which they belong, with the exception of the examinations in
Languages 1, 2, 3 and 4.

• In foreign languages, a uniform examination will be taken in
each language and at each level by candidates from all

Restrictions for compulsory
subjects and for options• Examinations 1 and 2 (L1 / L2)
Candidates who have followed an advanced course will be required to take
an examination on that course, and not, therefore, on the basic course.
• Examination 3
Candidates will be required to choose an examination in history (2 or 4 Candidates will be required to choose an examination in history (2 or 4
periods) or in geography (2 or 4 periods), unless a written examination in
one of these subjects has been taken. In that case the candidate will
choose either the subject not chosen before or philosophy (2 or 4
periods).

Candidates who have followed the advanced course in mathematics must
be examined on that course.

MarkingThe following three factors are taken into consideration for the Baccalaureate:
• The average preliminary mark C expressed out of 100.
• The average written examinations mark E (W in English) expressed out of 100.
• The average oral examinations mark O expressed out of 100.

• C, E (W) and O are expressed as whole numbers.
• The proportion of the final total mark for the examination allotted to the various parts will be as follows:
• 40 percent for the average preliminary mark C
• 36 percent for the average E (W in English) for the written examinations
• 24 percent for the average O for the oral examinations
• Final result = 0.40 C + 0.36 (W) + 0.24 O
• The final result is expressed as a mark out of 100 accurate to two decimal places.
To pass a pupil must have obtained an average overall mark of 60%.

• For details concerning the Mathematics examinations, reference should be made to document ‘2010-D-441-en-5’, approved by the Board of Governors at its meeting of 14, 15 and 16 April 2010.

• For details concerning the Art examinations, reference should be made to document ‘2009-D-579-en-2’, approved by written procedure 2009/34 on 13 November 2009.

Additional written paper
• In particular cases, European School students in the final school year may register for the European Baccalaureate in an additional option subject, whether or not they have attended a course in the subject in question in the school.
• Admittance to this additional Baccalaureate examination may be

• Admittance to this additional Baccalaureate examination may be authorised only if:
Documentation is provided to show that an examination in the subject is part of the conditions for admission to the higher education course on which the student wishes to embark.
• Registration for the examination and justification of the request must be received before 30 September in the student’s final school year i.e. the same time as the normal registration.

candidates may consult them before the

proclamation. The individual results will be handed to
each candidate in a sealed envelope on the evening
before the proclamation.
Equivalence with national secondary school certificates
Holders of the European Baccalaureate shall:
• enjoy in their respective countries all the benefits attaching to the
possession of the diploma or certificate awarded at the end of
secondary school in those countries;

• have the same rights as nationals with equivalent qualifications to seek
admission to any university in the territory of the Contracting Parties.
