Ralph Vaughan Williams' Mass in G Minor is considered by many to be one of the masterpiecesof English church music in our time. Dedicatedto Gustav Holst and his Whltsuntide Singers,it is essentially a liturgical work inspired by theqreat polyphonic liturgy of the English Renais-sance - particularly the masses of William Byrd and Thomas Tallis. Scored for double chorus -and solo quartet, the Mass abounds wLttl massive sonorities and antiphonal effects. Its second:performance was in London's Westminster Cathedral under the direction of Sir Richard-Terrv:it has besn.sunq at the most solemn Iiturqical observances the~e eve!;since. -:::=-~-Frequent long chains of parallel moving triads evoke a sound beloved by E'nglish composersas far back as the twelfth century; the constant fluctuation between major and minor harmoniesrecalls the flexibility and fluidity of the old modal scales. To thi('.Laughan Williams adds-his own striking originality, and the entire Mass eloquently reflects his deep personal spiritualityand mysticism. '-:-

The three-and-one-half years Handel spent in Italy (1706-1710) were the single most decisive in-fluence on his musical life - and the Dixit Dominus, written in Rome at age 22, has been called.the diploma of his Italian studies. The work is an extremely demanding grand concerto re-quiring great energy- and breadth.iphenomenal agility and precision, declamatory itigor andlyrical expressiveness. The effect is one of ebullience and breathless exhilaration and, for allits extravagance and occasional crudeness, the Dixit Dominus has a- un ique verve and Boldnessand displays a wonderfully imaginative use of color, qualities riot seen in. such profusion in themore pol ished works of Handel's maturity. - '- '

The prevailing spirit is instrumental, and the influences of the late. Baroque Italian, string concerto --::and secular chamber cantata are particularly evident. These, corriblned-with vast dimensioll.s: -::-the old German cantor's technique, and a new monumentality of style, se~tthe Dixit Dominusapart from Handel's earlier choral music and point significantly toward the masterpieces of hisEnglish period. - - _ -- -
