This city, centered in the heart of Europe, has been a meeting point for people from East and West for many centuries. More than one year after the disassembly of the Iron Curtain, this tradition makes Vienna to be the optimal venue for the next Eurographics con- ference. Many participants are expected from Eastern Europe. Their ideas, experiences and re- suits of research in Computer Graphics are un- known to most colleagues from the West, and vice versa. For this reason, Eurographics'91 will be a vital meeting point for people from all over the world working in Computer Graphics, and it will give a great occasion for a stimulating exchange of experience. The conference will be preceded by two days of tutorials (September 2 to 3). Twelve tutorials will be given, six in parallel on each day. They will be held by leading international experts, and will cover a wide range of topics offering an excellent opportunity for professional development in Com- puter Graphics and related areas. The programme includes both introductory and advanced tutorials. The conference itself (September 4 to 6) con- sists of technical programme sessions, lectures given by invited speakers, State of the Art Re- ports, and presentations of Graphics R&D in European Community programmes. Themes of the conference include Image Synthesis and Anima- tion, Scientific Visualization, Graphics Hardware, Modelling, Image Processing, Human-Computer Interaction, Graphics Standards, and their appli- cations. For the technical programme sessions submitted papers will be refereed. Authors have been invited to submit unpublished papers, which are either research contributions or practice & experience papers. From all papers presented at the con- ference, a jury of international experts will select the Best Paper, and the author will receive the Giinther Enderle Award. Proceedings containing all papers will, as usual, be published by Elsevier and will be available at the conference. International experts will report on their special fields of activity as invited speakers. These sessions will offer an opportunity to learn from the history of research in these fields as well as from new developments, trends and goals. For the State of the Art Reports, papers will be presented that cover topics of wide current inter- est in key fields, which will keep the attendees abreast of the State of the Art. Eurographics'91, the twelfth annual conference of the European Association for Computer Graphics, will take place from September 2 to 6, 1991, in Vienna, Austria.

From all papers presented at the con- ference, a jury of international experts will select

the Best Paper, and the author will receive the Giinther Enderle Award.

Recent significant advances will be highlighted as well.

Eurographics'91 wants to serve as a forum for the presentation and discussion of results of R & D programmes financed by the EC related to Com- puter Graphics. For this reason, three sessions at the conference will be devoted to the presentation of such projects. Some of the areas to be address- ed at these sessions will be Visualization methods, relationship between Computer Graphics and Image Processing, integration with other services, high performance Computer Graphics and super- workstations, and experience with and evolution of approaches to UIMS (User Interface Manage- ment Systems).

To complement the lectures, a poster presenta- tion will be organized, offering the opportunity to publish results of work less appropriate for oral presentation, results of work achieved after the deadline for submission of papers, and work still in progress. Posters together with a short descrip- tion should be received by the Conference Secre- tariat before June 1, 1991.

In conjunction with the conference, a major industrial exhibition and a slide, film and video competition will take place, both open to the public. The exhibition will be the largest event of its kind in the field of Computer Graphics in Austria. The latest achievements in hardware, software and applications will be presented by a

wide variety of international and local companies. Guidelines for exhibitors can be ordered from the Conference Secretariat.

While the exhibition will give a survey of Com- puter Graphics from a technical point of view, the slide, film and video competition will present appli- cations in art, advertising, entertainment, etc. Sub- mission deadline for all material is June 1, 1991. The best entries based on creativity and technical excellence will be given awards.

The new knowledge gained at the conference will be very stimulating to all participants, but that is not all. Vienna itself, beautifully situated at the eastern end of the Alps, is very impressive because of its special flair and its wonderful old buildings. Even the conference centre is a land- mark, it is the former palace of the Austro- Hungarian emperor! Furthermore, 1991 is the year of the 200th anniversary of Mozart 's death. Many performances of his operas, symphonies, concerts and chamber music will be given during the whole year. Don' t miss the chance to combine Euro- graphics'91 with such an event!

A tourist programme will be organized for par- ticipants of the conference and accompanying per-

sons, including a sightseeing walk throughout the city and a trip to its lovely surroundings. Further- more, social events, free of charge to all par- ticipants, will give the opportunity to meet people and converse in the relaxed atmosphere which is a typical feature of Vienna. For example, one even- ing will be spent at a "Heuriger", where wine- growers serve their young wine, and where you can find a very special flair.

As you can see, there will be a wide variety of technical programme as well as of diversion. Be- cause of this variety, Eurographics'91 should be a fixed date in the calendar of all people working in Computer Graphics. It makes no difference whether you are a researcher, practitioner, teacher, vendor, or user, we hope to see you in Vienna!
